โญTECHNICALโญ
IT'S FOALING SEASON!!! ๐Ÿ’š
By far one of our favourite times of the year with so many bundles of joy starting to hit the ground all over the country. Consider the following to ensure your mare is receiving adequate nutrition to fuel her growing foal:
- Milk is produced at a rate equal to 1-4% of body weight per day, meaning the mare's requirements for energy and protein increase significantly from late pregnancy
- Don't underfeed! Monitor the mare's body condition and increase forage and hard feed accordingly
- Calcium and phosphorous requirements also increase, select a well formulated broodmare feed to supply all nutrients in a balanced way
- At least 1.5% body weight in forage combined with either NRM Evolve or Progress (for good doers) is ideal
- Both Evolve and Progress are fortified with organic trace minerals and Buffered Mineral Complex from Equine Research, proven to assist with improving bone density and digestive health.

Look for Evolve and Progress at all rural retail outlets, and get in touch with the NRM team for further advice for your mare and foal.

๐Ÿ’š WINTER FEEDING ๐Ÿ’š
Thereโ€™s no hiding that we are well and truly in the depths of winter! Avoid the winter blues for you and your equine companion with these handy tips from our nutritionist, and make sure your horse stays in top condition right through until spring.
โญ Condition
While many horses and ponies will maintain their condition well over winter (especially if theyโ€™re a good doer), older horses and horses with faster metabolisms like some Thoroughbreds can lose weight quickly. Preventing weight loss is always easier than trying to put weight on, so monitor body condition regularly so calories can be adjusted before significant weight loss occurs.
โญ Fibre first
Consistent consumption of quality fibre ensures optimum digestive tract health and helps to keep the horse warm. If pastures are low then supplementary hay will be required. Chaff varieties and ensiled forages are also ideal to increase fibre.
โญ Energy
The cold weather of winter puts extra demands on the horseโ€™s metabolism which means energy requirements can increase. Working horses, breeding horses or particularly poor doers will be unable to maintain condition on forage alone at this time of the year and will therefore require calories from hard feed.
โญ Feed selection
Choosing a feed from the range of high quality NRM complete feeds is a convenient option as they provide all required protein, nutrients, and extra calories. Feeds containing high quality fat sources like Kentucky Equine Research Equi-Jewel such as NRM Low GI, Ultimate Sport and the new NRM Muscle Relieve, are a real advantage for preventing weight loss.
โญ KER Equi-Jewel high fat low starch stabilised rice bran conditioning supplement is a great way of increasing the calories in your horseโ€™s ration. Equi-Jewel is also now buffered to assist with digestive health.

For assistance with feeding plans for all types of horses, consult with an experienced equine nutritionist.

The parking at Garlands has been altered from the usual turn around area where we park.
Please park sensibly around the tanker track, and make sure you clean up poo and hay etc before you leave.

It might pay to phone the hunt line 07 377 4868 in the morning to check in case there is a heap of rain overnight.

Thanks also to the crew who braved the weather today to lower wires, fix spars and make some new spars for you all to enjoy

โญTECHNICALโญ
THIRD TRIMESTER BROODMARE FEEDING
With the majority of foals being born from August onwards, now is an important time to consider nutrition for broodmares in the crucial third trimester.
- Energy requirements at this time are approximately 15% greater than in early pregnancy
- Protein, amino acid and mineral requirements also increase significantly
- Foetal nutrient requirements exceed mareโ€™s maintenance requirements and diet must be adjusted
- The most important nutrients for third trimester are the trace minerals zinc, manganese, iron, selenium and copper as these are found at low levels in the mareโ€™s milk. Therefore the foal needs to store these in the liver in the last three months of pregnancy to compensate for the low levels they will be receiving once they are born
- 1.5% body weight in forage and a balancer pellet such as NRM Progress is ideal
- Progress is fortified with organic trace minerals and Buffered Mineral Complex from Kentucky Equine Research, proven to assist with improving bone density and digestive health.

Look for Progress at all rural retail outlets, and get in touch with the NRM team for further advice for your mare and foal.
