Are you a dog or puppy owner? If so, we’re urgently calling on you to vaccinate them against parvovirus – it could be the difference between life and death.

We’re seeing more and more cases of the highly contagious and potentially fatal canine parvovirus (parvo) around the country as we face a third outbreak in as many years. Parvo can remain on surfaces for up to a year, so dogs are at constant risk if they’re unvaccinated, or if their vaccinations lapse. Please ensure your dogs are protected against this heartbreaking illness, and book your vaccines and boosters as soon as possible.

Meet little Squidget who had a very rough start to this year!
She has been a bit on and off for a little while and her Mum presented Squidget to us when she had another episode of feeling unwell with vomiting and diarrhea and she wasn’t eating much.
A blood test performed by Dr Caroline Whitty pointed towards severe liver disease and Squidget was scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound exam with Dr Kathrin Brinker, who fortunately was available on that day offering referral services at our clinic on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Unfortunately, Squidget turned out to have a gallbladder mucocele. A gallbladder mucocele is an abnormal buildup of mucus within the gallbladder. Normal bile contains a small percentage of mucus, but when a mucocele develops, the bile becomes mostly mucus. Hence, mucocele bile is not liquid like normal bile, but is thick and viscous. Usually, the gallbladder distends more and more trying to pass the thick bile into the bile duct and into the gut. If the gallbladder even ruptures, the incidence of serious complications and death is significantly increased.
Because of its appearance on ultrasound, the biliary mucocele is also called ‘Kiwi Gallbladder’.
If this is seen in a sick, jaundiced patient like Squidget, surgical removal of the gallbladder is usually performed as soon as possible.
Dr Kathrin and Dr Caroline performed surgery and removed Squidget’s gallbladder. She had a hard time after her surgery as she still had raving liver infection and inflammation and also inflammation of her pancreas. We placed a feeding tube, so that we could maintain her nutrition and she was on various drips and a multitude of medications – for over a week she had to be hospitalized 24/7. Fortunately, Squidget is a positive little dog and she kept her good spirits all along the way!
Very much to her Mum’s delight, she is now out of the woods, doing really well and enjoying a new lease of life! We’re so glad we could help her and are so proud of her, too!

🐰 Attention all rabbit owners 🐇
Is your rabbit vaccinated?
Rabbit Calicivirus is a fatal disease that affects not only wild rabbits but domesticated ones too. It spreads very quickly and can be fatal in just the space of a few days. It is largely transmitted through direct contact and contaminated food and water.

🔎 Keep an eye out for:
▪ Loss of apetite
▪ Lethargy
▪ Fever

✅ Make sure you:
▪ Vaccinate your rabbit, the first one can be given at 12 weeks, then annually
▪ Minimise any contact that could be made with wild rabbits, keep your rabbit in a protected or fenced area
▪ Contact us immediately if your rabbit is showing any signs of Calicivirus

Rabbit Calicivirus is deadly and can wipe out entire rabbit populations, so lets keep our fluffy friend protected! Please call the clinic if you would like to book in for a vaccination.

Canine Parvovirus 🦠
This is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs, so it is important to keep all dogs protected against becoming infected.
If you have a new puppy it is important that you bring them in for all their initial puppy vaccinations. These will include a vaccination to protect against Parvovirus. The Parvovirus vaccination then needs to be repeated every 3 years in order to prevent infection.

It is important to be preventative, as the vaccination is ineffectual when the dog is already sick and infected.
Parvovirus is only one of the viruses that dogs can contract if left unvaccinated, so if you think your dog may not be up to date with their vaccinations please give us a ring or visit our website to book an appointment.

Who says glasses are just for humans?
Bastian is looking paws-itively studious with his new glasses prescribed by the vet of course. And Nurse Bella had to make sure they were the right fit! 🤓
