✨ Update on 2024 so far!

Just over a month ago now I jumped on a plane to embark on a journey back to the US, on route to Colorado to Reining Trainer - Vanessa Strotmann. I met Vanessa in 2022 at Todd Bergens where she was an assistant trainer. I really loved her training methods and style with the horses, with the plan of eventually wanting to return I expressed my interest of coming back to learn from her one day, now here I am. Located in a picturesque valley, with lush green pastures and herds of Elk roaming the fields, it’s easy to say I’ve fallen in love with the area as much as the horses.

I will be returning to New Zealand in the spring and am excited to announce I’ll be based and training at Four Peaks Arena, Geraldine.

I am offering training spots for a very limited number of outside horses this summer starting from October onwards.

Catherine Sellin and I are incredibly proud to introduce our superstar 3 year old Warmblood TB cross, LVPH FURST SHINING STAR. Having worked with and seen Bloomfield Furst Love Songs’ progeny we very quickly fell in love with the temperament and trainability of them, so we carefully selected a proven mare not only by conformation and temperament but one who had made her presence in the show ring taking home champions around Canterbury, jumping 1.5m in Eventing and show jumping to a 1.10m.

The end of November 2023 was the beginning of Ra’s career under saddle. Having been under saddle lightly this summer, we are so proud and amazed at how much he has showed us his willingness to try, how naturally balanced he is in his body and a true pleasure to work with, to say we are a bit smitten by him is quite an understatement.

We’d like to say a special thank you to Larissa Corboy Equestrian for her amazing help within these last couple of months with Ra and showcasing him for us, also to Bentleys’ owner and trainer Anna Terrell and Anna Gale for always giving us their support and encouragement.

Ra is now off for a well earned holiday and rest till I return in the summer to continue his training and get him back into work ready to hit the NZ market for his new home. 🤎

I still remember the day over 6 years ago, driving into the beautiful Maruia Valley on our way to meet what would soon be called Cascata Quarter Horses - NZ, home of the one and only LIL HOLLYWOOD FRECKLES, aka Idaho and his amazing owners. Nestled beside the southern alps and sitting along side the Maruia river it was and still is a true hidden gem and a place I still love to go visit today. Little did we know that day would be the beginning of an incredible friendship and journey with horses together.

From having the pleasure of watching Idaho make his debut in the show pen with NZ’s highly respected trainer Gerry Johnstone, to meeting his first foal crop out of their all imported Australian mares, I knew this was the beginning of an incredible opportunity for NZ and it’s western performance world. This show season showed New Zealand the true nature and talent of these beautiful horses from the Valley, I watched in awe as these young ones stepped confidently into the show pen and in amazement seemed to get better with each run. I honestly had tears in my eyes that day so proud to have witnessed and be apart of Cascatas’ journey to get here.

Having started one of them myself, having had the pleasure to train another this summer and now having the chance to have one in my own paddock awaiting my return from America I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for Delta and I.

A huge warm thank you to Cascata Quarter Horses - NZ for the opportunities to work along side you and your horses, and for the amazing friendship that has formed because of it. Roll on the next 6 years and many more after that!

A dear friend Beda trainer/owner of The Dunes Equine and well known horsewoman from South Ballina NSW Australia is coming back to NZ for three weeks from the 2nd - 22nd of April.

She will be based in Okuku North Canterbury and is very kindly offering her services for the time she’s here.

Beda specialises in • re-schooling horses that have picked up bad habits under saddle or on the ground.
• Anxious horses that need confidence brought back to them under saddle.
• More mileage and exposure for your young or older horse.
• Or returning back to work.

What a year 2023 has been.

I feel blessed and grateful to be home for Christmas and back working with these amazing animals for the summer.

A very wise man once said to me, horse training isn’t a four or five year qualification it’s a life time commitment of continuous learning with the horse.

How incredibly humbling are these beautiful animals, no matter who you are, what you have or don’t have, it ultimately comes down to how you choose to show up for them, your energy, your compassion and empathy to try best communicate with these beautiful animals.

The biggest gift 2023 offered me was appreciating the simplicity that life can offers us. 💛

I started pumpkin myself and she was and still is the nicest horse I’ve ever started under saddle, her movement is like riding on a cloud and her mind was always so willing under saddle.

She is currently in foal and due in a few weeks, she will be available on her second cycle to breed to fresh or frozen semen.

Due to a cancellation we have decided to offer a FREE rider spot to our cattle working and Horsemanship clinic this weekend! (7 and 8th Oct).

We have 2 amazing clinicians (Gerry Johnstone and Gemma Williams-Gray) and an outstanding venue with all aspects of cattle work being done! So if you have ever thought you fancied yourself a cowboy/girl then this could be your chance. Any stage any breed of horse and any discipline is welcome to enter.

Conditions of entry are that at the time of the clinic you must be a financial member of RVHA-NZ (If you win you will need to sign up). Don't worry, our membership fee is super reasonable and we offer lots of ongoing training and club events so you will surely get your monies worth.

You must be available to ride both the Saturday and Sunday sessions and transport yourself and your horse to the venue (North Canterbury, Copper Creek).
You will need to pay for your own yard/stable / camp fees at Copper Creek.

Some food for thought for y’all!

• Lightness with your hands and body •

I always try to use the analogy with riders of driving your car Vs riding your horse with the reins and your body.

Confused?.. 🤔

Let me explain… 😅

Have you ever gone to try out a new car, you put your foot on the break and suddenly get je**ed back in your seat, you realise then that the break is far more sensitive then your old car so you adjust how much pressure you put on the pedal for next time and before not too long you’ve got the feel of it. As you are driving along you have to make a right turn in 50m, you start to gently put your foot on the break and while doing so with your hands you smoothly (no death grip on the steering wheel) guide the car around the corner.

No vehicle drives the same but It’s effortless and second nature to you to drive a vehicle.

I try to use this example when I see riders who’s knuckles are going white from clasping the reins so tight or pull on the horse to stop like they are about to go over a 20ft drop if they don’t.

“Asking” our horses to stop with a soft feel or guiding them between our reins with gentle hands is so important to their learning, of course if they don’t listen the first, second or third time (which if you’ve been pulling on them for a while they no doubt won’t stop straight away as they will be anticipating you pulling on them) you may need to increase your pressure but it’s SO important to “ask” with a gentle feel first, to be smooth LIKE your foot gently easing on the breaks while your hands lightly guide the car to turn the corner.

This WILL eliminate resistance in them (pulling against your hands, chucking their head up, running through the shoulders for examples) and allows a relationship of trust and willingness to be built between the two of you.

I always say to riders who are quite nervous but want to practise being more relaxed and gentle through their hands and body, to start in a smaller area, re; round pen, then move to an arena and then try it out on a trail ride.

Build that trust, practise gentle hands, deep breaths to relax your body & eliminate the resistance in your horse and in yourself.

Make it second nature to ride your horse this way, like driving your car, effortless.

Hello to my Horsey Community, 👋🏼

It has certainly been a minute ⏳ and as you have seen, I’ve been rather quiet this past year on my business page. 🤐

For some of you who don’t know me personally, here’s a little insight on what life has looked like for me the past year and what’s also in the pipe line!
🛫🌍🐴🛬

Just over a year ago I took a plane ride out of New Zealand on route to America. 🇺🇸 There I hit the road 🚙 with my dear friend, Australian Cow horse/Cutting Trainer Phil Webb, we landed in San Francisco and traveled across 7 states visiting some incredible trainers and training facilities! I was fortunate enough to chat, watch and learn from some insanely talented trainers all over the states.

From cutting trainers like, Blue Lavender to one of the best Cow horse Non Pro Riders, Anne Reynolds a true badass cowgirl and a genuine inspiration to me. 🙌

After a month on the road I went to Weatherford Texas, to work for NCHA HALL OF FAME Cutting Horse Trainer Gavin Jordan, who has over 3 million dollars to his name in winnings. 🏆 To watch this guy put his hand down on a horse and work a cow is really something spectacular to see. I was fortunate to work for Gavin and his talented Assistant Trainer Gildo Minichiello, this is where I really got a taste of beginning a young horse on a flag and starting them on cattle, a truly invaluable experience. I was also very fortunate to ride some incredibly talented open cutting horses, this gave me an amazing opportunity to see and learn the starting of their programme with their young horses to what they would like their finished product to be.

After some time in Weatherford Texas and a bit of exploring in between, I then made my way to spend my final couple of months in Eagle Point Oregon to, NRCHA and NRHA 5 Million Dollar 💵 Rider Todd Bergen, one of America’s most respected Reining and Cow horse Trainers in the industry. To watch this man train in the flesh, you really see what true dedication is and what it takes to be at the top! There is certainly no magic pill or special equipment, it’s pure dedication, consistency and discipline. Being around Todd and his assistant trainers was like opening a treasure chest of so many delicious goodies. The training tools were endless to see and do and the expectations of performance were set high on the horses, but with such care and pride in their training programme.

After finishing my time in the states (very sad to leave) I made my way over to the East Coast of Australia 🇦🇺🦘 to a small town called Wodonga, that sits on the boarder of NSW and VICTORIA to spend the next 2 months with my dear friend Phil Webb, training horses in between the winter days, this was a great chance for me to play around with the wonderful tools I’d learnt and brought with me from the states. 🧰🛠️

After my time on the East Coast of Australia I made the move to Perth Western Australia, with some thought I decided to have a break from the horses and head to the Great Sandy Desert WA, 🐪🌵🐕🐍☀️ the hottest 🥵 place in Australia, its a heat like no other and the flies… 🪰 well, I learnt quickly it doesn’t pay to speak with your mouth open too wide.. 😵🫢

Off to the mines I went to move dirt.. well, gold and dirt. 👷‍♀️🛻 It was and has certainly been an eye opening experience walking into a position and lifestyle I’d never experienced before or even come close to for that matter but I embraced this new role and lifestyle with open arms. What a ride so far, it certainly challenged me at the beginning and tested my resilience to its limits. 💪🏽 The personal growth and learning📚that has come from it is well, truly mind-blowing.

Independence, strength, dedication, learning, so much learning, patience and silence, resilience, determination, simplicity, what the definition of happiness means to me, the importance of having a break and reflecting on one’s self, discovery of who you are or want to work towards being, where my passions lay, being dependent on yourself and not others, learning I am my biggest obstacle, that if you really want something it’s 100% achievable if you set your mind to it. 💛 The learning has been endless. It has sparked a hunger and a desire in me for chasing my passion, for growth and to keep learning all the wonderful lessons life has to teach me. 👩‍🏫

In a few months I will be returning to New Zealand for the summer 🎉 before I head back to America ✈️🇺🇸🗽WHICH MEANS!!! I will be available for
• Starting horses • Advanced training with horses
• Lessons and Clinics, you name it with horses and I’ll be doing it over the summer and I cannot wait to ride with y’all! 🥰

I already have training slots secured for the summer but still have availability spread out through December to March for starting horses, and positions available for Advanced Training feel free to send me a message or email any time to discuss options and availability over this coming summer with you and your horse(s). 😊

To our North Islanders ❤️

RVHA-NZ Committee have spent the last couple of days working tirelessly on how we can make our NI NATIONAL SHOW 2023 go ahead, we understand the devastation of what Cyclone Gabrielle has created towards so many people lives, no words can take the pain away, but please know we are thinking of you.

We know for some it’s not possible to make the journey to our show held in Taupo next weekend, but we also feel that for those able to attend and in the mist of this difficult time it would be an opportunity to bring a community of like-minded passionate riders together for an absolutely fantastic weekend of laughs, smiles and a lot of fun.

At this stage we are running at a substantial loss if we go ahead with this show, and if aren’t able to have more riders attend or sponsorship come in.
