Cruciate conditions ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•

Cruciate inflammation, partial or full rupture can present as a sudden painful, non-weight bearing lameness.

Either with conservative management or while waiting for surgery, some immediate actions can be taken to improve the outcome for the patient.

Weight management - there will be a sudden reduction in calorie expenditure due to the fact exercise will be restricted. Ensure calorie intake is reduced to match. It is crucial the patient doesnโ€™t put on weight.

Home environment adjustments - non-slip surfaces should be placed around the home where the dog will walk and especially around corners. No free climbing up stairs, you can discuss assisting the dog upstairs if they will be very distressed about being left downstairs. Padding about in distress is often worse than assisting the patient upstairs to sleep wither their owners.

Treatment with Electrophysical Therapy - treatments such as ultrasound therapy, laser and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy can help to modulate pain and inflammation.

Take quick action on these points to throw some water on the cruciate fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Good reminder! Happy Trick and Treats-Canine Massage & Remedial Therapy ๐Ÿพ

Going trick-or-treating tonight? Keep the lollies, chocolate and other treats away from your pets! Chocolate and sugar-free treats containing xylitol are as they can cause serious health problems in pets.

Stash your sweet treats (and wrappers) away from your pets to keep them safe. If you're worried your pet might have eaten something they shouldn't have, contact your vet for advice.

๐ŸพNox is an athletic superstar! His owner Melissa understands the importance of keeping such a high performance canine, healthy and well maintained.

The beautiful Nox, has weekly class IV laser therapy treatments before and after an agility meeting.
His Physio has said that Nox has been in the best condition ever since the regular weekly treatments.

Photobiomodulation (PBM), is popular in agility canines for its therapeutic benefits. Hereโ€™s how it can help agility dogs:

1. Pain Relief and Anti-Inflammatory Effects
- PBM can reduce pain by promoting the release of endorphins and increasing blood flow to the treated area. This is beneficial for agility dogs that experience joint, muscle, or tendon discomfort due to repetitive movements and high-impact activities.
- By decreasing inflammation, PBM reduces discomfort in conditions like arthritis or muscle strain, allowing dogs to recover faster and with less pain after training or competitions.

2. Enhanced Tissue Repair and Healing
- PBM stimulates cellular repair processes, encouraging faster healing of microtears in muscles and ligaments common in agility dogs. This means quicker recovery times and less downtime between training sessions or competitions.
- The increased mitochondrial activity stimulated by PBM accelerates ATP production, giving cells more energy for healing.

3. Improved Muscle and Joint Flexibility
- PBM helps relax tight muscles and tendons, enhancing flexibility and range of motion. Improved flexibility reduces the risk of strain or sprain injuries, keeping dogs agile and fit for intense movements required in agility sports.
- Itโ€™s especially helpful as a warm-up or cool-down therapy, helping maintain joint and muscle health over time.

4. Enhanced Circulation and Lymphatic Flow
- PBM improves local blood flow, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to targeted tissues. This boosts overall endurance and strength, helping agility dogs stay at their peak performance.
- Improved lymphatic flow also aids in removing metabolic waste products, which can reduce post-exercise soreness and recovery time.

5. Non-Invasive and Drug-Free Approach
- PBM offers a non-invasive, drug-free alternative to pain relief and inflammation management, reducing reliance on medications with potential side effects. It can be safely used alongside other therapies and does not interfere with regular training.

6. Stress Reduction and Relaxation
- The calming effects of PBM therapy can reduce stress in performance dogs, helping them stay calm and focused on the agility course. Relaxed muscles and reduced pain contribute to better mental focus, which is crucial for competitive success.

Used consistently, PBM can help maintain agility dogsโ€™ musculoskeletal health, enhance performance, and improve recovery times, making it an excellent addition to a well-rounded wellness plan.
