Calling all Guinea Pigs owners....

Otago Cavy Otago is holding an amazing Pet Show at our South Island Champs Show, which we are holding on 13th April at Southern Canterbury A&P Pavillion. We are fortunate to have the fabulous Tracy Loomes from Moonbeam Stud in Christchurch judging our pet show! 😱

We encourage all Guinea Pigs owners to bring their Guinea pigs along for this fun-filled day filled with learning more about their Guinea Pigs from experienced Guinea pigs owners, winning epic prizes & meeting like-minded people! 🥰

Member Pet Show:
🔵 Junior - Owner 13 years of age or under, then split into Roughcoat, Smoothcoat & Longcoat (Coat type of Guinea Pig)
🔵 Senior - Owner over 13 years of age, then split into Roughcoat, Smoothcoat & Longcoat (Coat type of Guinea Pig)

Novice Pet Show: (First Time Showing)
🔵 Junior - Owner 13 years of age or under
🔵 Senior - Owner over 13 years of age

Hi! My name is Belle
My Nicknames are Miss Belle, little p**p, and fluffy bum
I am an Alpaca guinea pig!
I am about a year and 4 months old
I LOVE all food, but especially grass and veggies!
My favourite thing to do is run around and wheek at the front of the cage before getting fed, as well as lounging around and popcorning during the day.
When I was younger, I was a show guinea pig, and my hair was very long! But now my evil hooman gives me regular haircuts to keep my hair short.
I have quite a friendly, bold, and cheeky personality, and am often very vocal! I will always tell my hooman and my friends if I am ever annoyed or hungry, but I also have a sweet side where I love pats and chin scritches (but don't tell the hooman that).

Hi! My name is Oakleigh Charcoal
My Nicknames are Edwina, Miss Edwina, and (Miss) fluffy bum.
I am a Rex guinea pig!
I am going to be 2 years old in a month!
My favourite foods are grass and lettuce.
My favourite thing to do is lounge around with my friends during the day and wheek at my hooman at dinner time.
I have quite a chill, relaxed personality. Not much bothers me! I also love cuddles and having scratches on my forehead and chin.

I haven't been posting much because it's been a bit of a crazy few weeks with my course assessments, treating Edwina for a fungal infection, planning for next year, and then having unplanned minor surgery yesterday, not to mention the horrific world events going on currently. I feel very lucky to have my piggies at times like these to cuddle and make me feel calm ❤️

It was an amazing show today, thank you to Otago Cavy Club and especially Josh Wilson-Jones and Andorra Sedgeman for all the work you do planning and setting up shows. And thank to everyone who helped and supported me, this is a great supportive community.

Prickly got best longcoat pet and reserve best pet, as well as champion pet! Sharkdog got best smoothcoat pet. Claremont Black Betty got Reserve of breed (self-black breed), Reserve of group (self breeds), and won best adult in show!

🐹 Nail Clipping & Mite Treatment 🐹

Otago Cavy Club will offer nail clipping & mite treatment at our spring show this week, experienced Guinea Pigs owners will do this. We will also be doing a care info display with people to answer questions regarding Guinea Pigs you have. 😊

Did you know your Guinea Pig should be treated for mites & parasites often, even if they don't have parasites? 😮

Clean cage, happy piggies (full cage clean for the girls today and partial for the boys). I think this is their favourite thing ever because they can cause chaos, rearrange, and destroy everything after I spend so much time making things look nice 😂. Everyone's doing super well and isn't showing any signs of illness!

It's been a bit of a crazy week... I've been recovering from an illness, then Edwina (the chocolate rex) was suspected to potentially have a mild respiratory infection and prescribed antibiotics. Later that same day Belle, her cagemate, started showing the same breathing. So now everyone, including my boys, are on antibiotics as a caution. Respiratory infections are unfortunately a relatively common illness among guinea pigs and can turn to pneumonia and be deadly if left untreated! Unfortately it can be super hard to detect as guinea pigs tend to try hide any weakness or ill health, and can also be carriers while being asymptomatic. Interestingly to me as an animal health nerd is that one of the bacteria that can cause respiratory infections in guinea pigs is the same bacteria that causes kennel cough in dogs. I'm very glad everyone seems to be doing okay, certainly not losing appetite!

Otago Cavy Club is holding our next show on Sunday, 24th September, at Carisbrook School hall in Dunedin. The pet show judge will be the fantastic Kerryanne Miller from Pearl Haven Cavy Stud in Wellington, and we are very fortunate to have Otago Cavy Club's very own club secretary, Andorra Sedgeman, judging the championship purebred show. We hope to see all Otago Guinea Pig owners at our last show for the year with their cute Guinea Pigs!

Not as fancy as my girls' cage but my boys love this setup the best. They especially love sleeping and snuggling under the doll bed and eating piles of hay
