We've been busy the past couple of weeks...

Great Reviews/Mentions such as this one mean so much to a small business like Beau & Co. In the 4.5 years we've been around, we've received dozens of wonderful reviews, but unfortunately, Facebook has made it difficult to not only leave (Reviews/Mentions) consistently, but also, to easily see them.

Somewhere in Metaland, more amazing reviews can be found...
But where they've gone, we've not the slightest idea!

It's been awhile.

Could Long Nails Be Affecting Your Dogs Behaviour?

Trimming your dog’s nails can feel like a bit of a chore, and it's easy to put off or forget about them. But keeping nails short is more than just cosmetic, it's crucial for your dog's comfort and health.

Imagine when your toenails get too long and they press against the end of your shoes. It gets painful doesn’t it? Now, think about your dog. When their nails are too long, they press into the ground with each step, potentially causing discomfort and pain, especially on hard surfaces.

But here’s where it can get even more complex. If your dog tends to pull on the lead when they see another dog, and that pulling causes pain in their paws or limbs due to their overgrown nails, they may start to make a negative association if that pain happens when another dog appears.

Over time, your dog might begin to anticipate pain when seeing another dog and respond with barking, lunging, or avoidance behaviours in an attempt to prevent discomfort. That’s how something as simple as long nails can contribute to behaviour. Over time, long nails can also cause your dog to walk differently, potentially leading to more serious issues.

So, take a moment today to check your dog’s nails. If they’re touching the ground when your dog is standing still, it’s likely time for a trim. Just be cautious not to cut into the quick, as this can be painful and cause bleeding. If you're unsure or nervous about trimming them yourself, a vet or professional groomer can help keep them comfortable and well-maintained.

This week was our first week back after a long, much-needed holiday abroad. As wonderful as it was visiting our UK whānau, it's great to be home with our furbabies.

It's been heartwarming to be reunited with all the Beau & Co. pups this week; I certainly felt the love.

We also welcomed a new darling to the pack, the beautiful golden doodle, Winnie. ❤️

Borrowed from a fellow dog-walker:

"Yesterday I was working with two large dogs in the park. As we walked along a child ran up to us yelling "Dogs!" and started trying to touch the dogs. I intervened and told them her that she needed to ask if it was ok first. Her parents laughed. When the dogs' owner gave her permission to pet the dogs she bent down, put her face right up to one of the dogs and tried to kiss him. Again, we intervened and again the parents laughed. This time everything was fine... the dogs were cool and no damage was done...but the next time? The same behaviour with a different dog could have a very different outcome with potentially traumatic results for everyone.

Children are at risk of being bitten by dogs when they aren't adequately supervised and/or they haven't been taught how to interact appropriately & respectfully - when they've been allowed to approach dogs indiscriminately, allowed to invade their space, hug them, pick them up, sit on them, mess with their food bowls or climb in their beds. When they haven't been taught to ask permission and they haven't been taught that dogs aren't playthings. And none of those things are the dog's fault.

Things every parent should teach their child -

• always ask permission before you touch a dog
• not all dogs want to be petted
• pat gently, with one hand from collar to tail
• no kisses, hugs or picking dogs up
• leave dogs alone when they are sleeping, resting or eating
• dogs aren't playthings

Dogs & children can be a wonderful, joyful combination and good relationships can be hugely beneficial to both. But only if dogs are taught how to behave around children and, crucially, children are taught how to behave around dogs.

(PS …and when children do approach politely and ask permission we should always praise them profusely for asking, even if the answer is 'No.")

Friday was Blaze's first time out with us. He's such a good boy, albeit a tad anxious, and so we kept the group small and calm to help ease him into it. ❤️
