Beau & Co. Dog Adventures

Beau & Co. Dog Adventures Beau & Co. is available for your pooches to join us on our Monday-Friday adventures! 25+ years professional experience. ❤️

Welcome to Beau & Co.
(5)

We pick up from your home- travel, explore the beaches, woods, and trails; socialise, play, sniff, rest, hydrate, before heading home to have the best sleep ever. 🐾❤️😊 Dog Adventures, located in Portobello, Dunedin, New Zealand; servicing all of Dunedin. You've absolutely no reason to feel guilty for not being with your pooch during the day if you're away at work, or if you're unable to get out,

or not feeling up to it, for whatever reason. Your beloved fur baby will be socialised, stimulated, reminded of good manners, given lots of cuddles, as well as high quality treats. Your best pal will only be let off the lead with your permission, and once we feel she's confident and trust-worthy enough around the rest of the pack. We'll progress from walking to going on many adventures around the peninsula, and all over Dunedin to various parks, beaches, and trails. Do you need overnight care? If your pooch is well-behaved and house broken, we may be able to help you out! Don't hesitate to ask! If you're interested, please message or call for more information. Phone: 021 293 0753. We hope to hear from you soon! Warmly,
Beau, Penny, and Jamie

This week, we welcomed back Lola after she had a 10 week break. Her enforced break is a cautionary tale for anyone who has a dog that loves scavenging.
You’ll see she is now wearing a muzzle. That’s not becomes she’s aggressive (she’s the opposite!), but because in late January, she chewed and swallowed a Y-shaped stick at some point, which her owners think happened while they were playing fetch with her at a river. The stick punctured her intestines in two places and required three surgeries, and a two-week stay in veterinary care to fix. She has now recovered, but her owners aren’t taking any chances because Lola has form: she had previous emergency surgery after eating a peach stone which caused a blockage. They accepted that with this inquisitive pooch, eating random non-edible objects was clearly not a one-off. They don’t want her to go through anything like this again (and neither does the vet) – and they certainly don’t want the stress (and expense!) that came with it!
So, they started muzzle training for when Lola is off lead. Thanks to some tips from an expert (thanks Megan from Kanuka Dog Spa), they slowly introduced the muzzle and now Lola associates it with fun, because the only time she has to wear it is on off-lead adventures. She’d rather not have it on, but once she’s wearing it, she’s swimming, running, and being her usual self, so no issues there... except that she can’t eat random objects anymore, which no doubt annoys her, but makes anyone with her a whole lot more relaxed, including the Beau & Co. Dog Adventures crew!

Welcome back, beautiful Lola.
We've missed you so very much. ❤️

This is something everyone should see. This xray is of a 2 week old puppy.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown - around 12-18 months depending on their breed, you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Princess Ruby still going strong, completely spoiled since her diagnosis last year. She's really going for it, sleeping back in the family bed, just as she did pre-Elli.
She's certainly proof hope is essential, and that miracles do exist. 🙏❤️🙏

Another day in the life of a dog walker. ❤️

Beached Porbeagle shark rescue in Portobello Harbour.

As I was leaving this morning to pick up my Tuesday pack, I looked out into the harbour at the receding tide, and saw two fins sticking up. Since Hector's Dolphins have been out and about lately around these parts, I assumed it was a beached Hector, although it appeared much larger. Knowing I had to act fast if it were to have a fighting chance, I immediately parked, jumped out of my van, and sped into the water. No one else was around except a DELTA employee, and so I shouted to ask if she could help me drag it into deeper water. As I got closer to it, I knew it wasn't a dolphin, but instead shark. Only semi-hesitant, and channeling my inner Steve Irwin, I grabbed it by the tail and began pulling it out. Helen from DELTA grabbed on as well, and helped clear the fin from the heavy mud. Together, we dragged it out until the gills and mouth were covered. Once the shark was in deeper water, I phoned DOC and the Marine Sciences Centre. Coincidentally, as I was waiting to get through to DOC, a DOC vehicle drove by, which we managed to flag down.
ANDREW, an out-of-town DOC employee came into the harbour to see what we were up to. He was able to contact more rangers, and Jake from the Marine Sciences Centre joined in, along with several other rangers.

Unfortunately, the beautiful girl ended up passing about an hour and a half into getting her into deeper water, but not from lack of a massive effort to get her going again.

Really proud to be part of something amazing today; equally sad that the magnificent creature didn't make it.

Videos of the rescue mission in the comments.
