It was Dentals Day at Perkins Quarter Horses. Megan from VetSouth Equine VetSouth spent most of the day making sure all our horse's mouths are all healthy. From our very special 26yr old Mare to our 18 month old gelding. They all get checked!!

"Shining Star" our 4 year old C**t and Anthony had their first team roping competition this weekend. They teamed up with Clayton and Miss Kitty for their first competition too.
Learners on both ends did a great job!!

Autumn Newsletter -

We are so very excited to let everyone know that Sky Sanders and Lynx won the New Zealand Barrel Racing Rookie Championship. This goal accomplished in their first season out of the Junior Division.

We had a great Weekend at Southern Barrel's at Lawrence. Big thankyou to Shelly Sanders and Rubie Cummings for being the officials and to the Lawrence Club for fantastic facilities.
It was so great to see the grounds being used for Barrels and a Cowboy challenge event!
The Perkins Quarter Horses did amazing this weekend. Well done to Sky Sanders, Barb Clouston, Hunter Perkins and Clayton Perkins (and Mum) on your placings!!

At this time of year in our world it's lambing time.
We are super busy on farm so daily and weekly Routines, timing & planning are important. We've had these plans in place since Autumn.
The young horses have had their time in and are now turned out. We have turned our attention and focus to our team of horses who we hope will travel with us this season.
At this time I'm reminded that a good executed plan will give you the confidence to perform come competition day.
Put the effort in each day to yourself and your horse and trust that process. Remember that work and recovery are equally important.
Our plan helps us stay ahead - there's nothing worse than feeling like you're behind. This is a sure way to lose confidence.

Know when your horse does well - recognize great effort and reward that. Learn to know your horse - and know yourself!! Take the time to do this and learn your boundaries.
Come competition day that recognition and routine will serve you well.

Put that plan in place if it's not there already.

I'm excited as there is new sand being delivered to the arena today and both wee boys are really keen to go ride after school.
Less than 7 weeks to go.....

Our mares are quietly brewing their babies up on the hills. They teach the 1 & 2 yr olds good manners and respect whilst the Stallion is on holiday down on the flat, getting ready to begin his work when his girls show up.

This article on "Sonny T Bar" was in the NZ Rodeo News in 2022.
"Sonny T Bar" has become the foundation bloodline for Perkins Quarter Horses. Both Anthony and I have owned & ridden many of his progeny. We can't rate these horses enough.

The AQHA NZ Breeding Season is upon us.
If you are looking for a Quarter Horse with a pedigree full of proven NZ speedy champions in the rodeo arena look no further than;

Raptor's Sire is Argyle Roc T Heart (Roc) who is by the legendary Sonny T Bar. Roc himself was a Champion Steer Wrestling Horse.
Raptor's Dam is by Docs Spinachex.
At Methven Rodeo last year ; Roc's (Argyle Roc T Heart) progeny won;
The Open Barrel Race with Methven ridden by Jen Atkinson.
The Second Division Barrel Race with Matilda ridden by Kaylee Hood.
The Junior Barrel Race with Methven ridden by Brooke Atkinson.
Not only that but Cinch (Just One Moore) ridden by Kate Haugh was Second in the Open Barrel Race. Cinch has Spinachex and Hustler bloodlines which is very similar to Raptor on the Dam side.

Jen and Brooke went on to win the New Zealand Open and Junior Barrel Racing Titles riding Methven. Methven was also awarded the New Zealand Barrel Horse of the Year. Kate and Cinch finished 4th in New Zealand and Kaylee and Matilda won the 1D fastest time at the South Island Barrel Racing Champs on the Saturday.
