It’s that time of year when every single animal rescue in the country is full to capacity, the calls keep coming asking for help, adoptions have slowed and resources are stretched. Oh, and everyone working in animal welfare is fast heading towards burn out.

This happens every year, and every year the wheels start to fall off and test our resilience.

Little angels like this kitten and all of her mates trapped in a homeless limbo, are what keep us giving our very best every day. But it is still a hard road.

What can we all do? Desex your pets. Get your mates to prioritise desexing their pets. I know it’s the same message over and over, but we don’t need to reinvent the wheel here, desexing is the solution.

We are really fortunate in the Waikato to have so many Vet Clinics all armed with incredible staff and incredible veterinarians. Use them. They are your local experts and can guide you in getting your pets set up with their basic needs: vet checks, desexing, vaccinations, microchipping, registration and flea/worming treatments.

It’s not a lot. It’s the absolute minimum.

The death rates in this country for kittens, cats, puppies and dogs is horrendous. If every pet owner did these basics, the outcomes would help stop this cycle.

What do Shelters need? Adoptions. Saying no to animals needing to come in is just the worst. We know we can help them with a simple yes, but we are all pretty experienced and know we can’t take in more than what we can adopt out.

Shelters need volunteers. The amount of animals we can take in completely relies on how many hands we have each day, to help care for them.

Resources are stretched. Most of the animals in shelters have missed many meals and we all go through a lot of food helping the animals.

Cleaning products. Shelters clean a lot. A healthy environment helps keep the animals healthy.

If you can help, please get in touch with your local shelter. Every animal deserves help, they just do.

Help! Volunteer Vacancies!

Many hands make light work, and Paws 4 Life is always keen to welcome more people to our family!

Volunteering is fun and rewarding, and a great way to support a cause that you’re passionate about.

Current Volunteering Opportunities:

We’re always in need of people to help out with the morning clean in our catteries. The work is fast paced and involves a lot of poo but our cattery is set up to be functional (easy to clean) and you’ll have access to all the kitten cuddles you could ever want.

Our existing volunteers are all very supportive and can show you the ropes, and we’re all pretty easy to get along with.

Cleaning shifts start at 7:15am and we are generally finished around 9:30am.

You will be:
🐾 16+ years old, hard working with an eye for detail, able to follow directions but also utilise your own initiative, and able to commit to one (or more) shifts on a weekly basis.

Meet Mack! He is the brother of Minxy (she’s currently at Pet Stock Cambridge). Mack is 10 months old, and he is a really cool dude.

He’s really easy going, totally fine with the other cats and kittens. He desperately wants attention, has all the goofy moves, and is an easy guy to have around.

Mack has been: vet checked, desexed last week, he has started his vaccinations, he is now microchipped, registered and up to date with his worm & flea treatments.

Mack is $220 to adopt and his current diet is Black Hawk/Purina.

Little Minxy is now available for adoption! Minxy is about 10 months old. She arrived in care along with her Cameo/White brother (who is here at the Shelter). She is fine with other cats, not a big lover of a busy shelter, but very sweet natured and affectionate.

Minxy has been: vet checked, desexed, started her vaccinations, she is microchipped, registered and up to date with her flea/worming treatments.

Minxy is $220 to adopt and her current diet is Black Hawk/Purina.

Mr Grey would like a place to call home. Grey is about 1-2 years old, quite a big cat but also an absolute gentleman. Meet the adorable duo, Gizmo & Ziggy!

Gizmo & Ziggy are both 5 years old, and have grown up together in a happy and loving home. Due to a change in circumstances, these two are in need of a new home.

Both have been vet checked, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, registered and are up to date with their flea/worm treatments.

Whilst they are an easy going duo, they will need weekly grooming by their new owners to keep them happy and healthy.

They are not bothered by the other cats and kittens in the Shelter and have been happy with the Team here fussing over them.

A chilled out home environment would suit them best, older children are ok and dogs are unknown.

Ideally we would love to rehome them together, but they are ok separated as well. Adoption: $280 each.

Miss Tillie would like a home. 🏠 Tillie arrived here last August and promptly gave birth to a litter of kittens. Yes, she has been here a long time and it has been our absolute pleasure to have her here with us.

Tillie, about 1.5 years old, she needed some time and attention from our team, and she has blossomed with everyone’s attention. Tillie is really quiet, very gentle, really loves ‘her bed’, and she is an absolute gem with the other kittens and cats.

As she is a quiet gentle soul, she will take time to settle into a new home. If you are a ‘cat person’, and are happy to help her adjust to likely her first ever home, please consider Miss Tillie.

Meet our Miss Tabitha! Tabs came in with her only child, Popcorn Jack. Whilst he’s sailed off to kitten kindy, Mama here is enjoying a return to her own youth!

Mama Tabitha is an all round bombproof sweetheart. No hoots given for the other cats and kittens here at the Shelter, she’s excellent at photo bombing other cats photo shoots, sweet and easy to handle.

Tabitha will fit into just about every type of home 🏠.
