Our featured lost pet of the day is Peanut, from Kaiapoi, Waimakariri, a light tan and white, female, chihuahua dog, approximately two years old. Peanut was last seen in the Otaki Street area of Kaiapoi, Waimakariri on the 8th July. Sepe was life chained as a tiny pup and was destined to live his life under a table. His shelter and fresh water access were deemed acceptable under the Dog Welfare Code.

Sepe's predicament came to light when his shelter (with no base) and his section was flooded during Cyclone Gabrielle in February.
Sepe was thankfully relinquished and he went into emergency foster care. We will update on Sepe's progress shortly.

NAWAC (National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee) state "Animal Welfare is a matter of considerable public debate both in NZ and overseas. Meeting rising expectations around animal welfare offers opportunities to build a more resilient system and further enhance NZ's global reputation".

They also state "NAWAC has a comprehensive review programme planned for most codes of welfare to ensure they reflect ongoing improvements in animal science and good practice".

It is incomprehensible that in February 2020 NAWAC stated the Dog Welfare Code would not be on their agenda until a review in 5 to 10 years time and that there will possibly be no need to review at that stage.

NAWAC continues to ignore the
cruelty of life chaining/containing to death for the over 250,000 NZ dogs surviving this inhumaness.
NAWAC must amend the Dog Welfare Code urgently.

Please continue to share these posts in order to have this cruelty recognized by NAWAC.
