Did you know that wool carpets are particularly good at absorbing sound? If you're a wool geek like us, read on. The porosity of carpet enables sound waves to pe*****te into the pile and dissipate which lessens the sound waves in the air.
And guess what else? Wool carpet is generally better at controlling noise than synthetic carpet because it usually has a higher weight and pile density. This makes wool carpet great choice for high traffic areas.

Using blunt combs and cutters?πŸ€”

Well, that’s not going to get the job done properly. Blunt gear can actually cause you a lot more issues than you'd expect:

πŸ‘Overheating integral parts of the handpiece
πŸ‘Cutting of the animal skin as the unit is forced through the wool
πŸ‘An Agitated animal: the sheep will not sit quietly whilst being shorn.

πŸ’‘Get your gear sharpened and always buy extra to get the job done!

Now there's some thought, Why is there no value in the wool today when it's sustainable and biodegradable? πŸ’

What do the buyers look for in your wool..???β β €πŸ‘πŸ‘
⠀
Colour -the whiter the better(more options). For dyes to take up in the fibre it needs to be a consistent colour otherwise you'll see the discrepancies in the final product.⠀
⠀
⠀
VM-(Vegetable matter) some VM is able to be washed out in the scouring process but somethings like thistle head and bathers bur can cause big issues further down the processing line⠀
⠀
Yield -this is the amount of (Lanolin) and water in your wool and this effects your bale weights. Higher the yield the better as it means theres more wool and less of that other stuff. ⠀
⠀
Micron -this should be as even across your flock as possible generally the smaller the micron the finer the wool. When selecting rams keep your micron even as what you buy is what you'll get more of.⠀
⠀
Length -both long and short fibres have their uses but they should not be mixed. Mixed lengths will effect your price ⠀
⠀
Unskirted/poorly skirted wool can be heavy discounted. Well prepared wool will generally do better in the auction room. ⠀

$1.86m training boost for shearing industry

It’s been a tough year for wool, but finally there’s good news – the creation of a new pilot training programme and up to 150 jobs in shearing.

$1.86 million over two years has been committed to develop and deliver a sustainable, integrated training model for the shearing and wool handling industry.

The programme will use micro credentialling, β€˜earn-as-you-learn’ on job training, and upskilling for up to 150 new shearers and 120 existing shearers.

It will target school leavers, unemployed and underemployed people, career changers and those in the industry who would like to learn new skills.

The new training arm, Kaiaka Wool Industry Training NZ, will initially include two pilot schemes in the Tairāwhiti/Hawke’s Bay and Otago/Southland areas, where it will also establish centres of excellence for expert training in shearing and wool handling.

Tahi Ngatahi will be part of the new integrated training package.
