Mating time is just around the corner and I am trying to make my mind up🤔.

I am experimenting with a "new gadget " FlashMate , that will help me to identify a heat. I don't like to interfere into and modify (PG, Cidr) natural cycle of a cow. Happy, healthy cow will do it for me, as well as I have no need to chase bucks around here.
One of my cows was already on heat 3 days ago and that is good to see.

And even though Highland cattle🐂 isn't exactly my cup of tea, I bought this coffee mug ☕️ in the Briscoes , it was on the special for a half price. Well, don't buy it!😆
I will need a lot of coffees during mating season😴.

Two days after disbudding and the calves are fine. I kept the herd close to the yards so I could regularly check the burn wounds as well as bring in the calves and administer nonsterodial anti-inflammatory and analgesic IM injection.
After the local anesthetic wears off the animals feel a pain. Undeniably, disbudding is a painful procedure, but it pays off in a long run. And I am sure the calves didn't lose any of the cuteness😉

Today's hat trick

✅️DNA sampling
✅️Tagging
✅️Disbudding
🐮
Hair sampling - to test for BD1 and BD2 (also known as CHONDRO) help me to determine if I have carriers present among my breeding cows and will help me with upcoming mating strategy to avoid producing affected calves.
🐮
Tagging - everyone in charge of cattle (or deer) in NZ must make sure they are tagged with National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) tags and registered in the NAIT system. The animals must be tagged within 180 days of their birth or before their first off-farm movement.
🐮
Disbudding - for peace in mind. We all perceive our own safety, safety of the others and safety of an animal(s) differently. My choice is to disbud domestic cattle that would grow horns otherwise. No matter how my cows and calves are socialized, handled and friendly, the fully grown horns can become an unintentional weapon, and I/ you always must stay mindful where the horns are and the same apply for the animals.
In the country where I come from 🇨🇿 we have a saying about a "dumb luck", which pretty much translates to "Better be safe than sorry". Right?
🐄
🐃
🐂
I will share another post on the disbudding procedure, procedure afterward and healing process later, all with graphic documentation.

I bought these rubber skips in Saddlery Warehouse Invercargill. They are perfectly shallow so all calves can reach with ease and don't need to dive in deep feeding buckets. But the best thing about these is I can forget them 🤯 in the paddock and they stay put when it's windy🌬. I don't need to look for them🔎, I don't need to climb over fences 🪜 to the neighbours for them....... Lately we had some horrendous winds, they stayed in a same spot and in one piece. And they look like they will last🥳.

Team member #2:

🐮

Ballerina is my interpretation project of perfect X bred miniature cow for homesteading. She is a result of line breeding.

🐮

She is Miniature Highlander Jersey Xbred. She grows quite long highlander coat for the winter. She sheds the coat for the summer and is sleek and shiny as anything, which makes her suitable for warm climate. She also kept beautiful dark marking on her head from the Jersey side of her pedigree.

🐮

She had her first calf this Spring and she is very caring mum. I hand milked her twice, after she had her calf and even though she never has been handled as much as Iti, she proved to be very trainable.

🐮

She was disbudded as a calf.

I promised to introduce my team of mums, so here is the first one I bred myself:

🐮

Iti is a dream cow for homesteading - wonderful mum, had her second (heifer) calf this Spring and is trained for hand-milking. She is Miniature Hereford Milking Shorthorn Xbred.

🐮

She was disbudded as a calf.

My super cool (project) flock of mottled silkies who enjoyed today's supply of greens a lot.
*
People often ask about "purity" of my silkies due to the red combs and white skin with dark spots.
*
In case you ask too, why?
*
Mottle gene inhibits pigment deposit in the skin, even in black skinned birds - simple as that😉

Everything went well, I only had one issue - the minis are too short (head to tail) for the hooftrimmig crate🤦‍♀️
My Hereford Iti was just doable as she still fits in a category of small frame cow, but for the Highlander Ballerina we have to think about different arrangement🤔
Honey was observing the action from the best spot🐩

Nice clover hay makes miserable days like today easier to cope with.
I learned not to complain about rain and rather make an extra round around our animals, because any rain in this time of the year, is a good rain.

On the October 5th we welcomed wee heifer calf. Her mum Iti (Little) had too many choices to give the birth on any beautiful Spring day we had, so she choose a blizzard to give her a birth. We named her Hiona (Snowflake).
Even though both cows, Iti and Ballerina, tried to protect her from the elements, for me it was really unbearable to watch and I walked the "herd" into the hay shed. But the wintry blast was only short lived and now they all enjoy beautiful sunny, warm days.

Iti is a rising 3, F1 generation of miniature hereford X, she stands at 115cm (45") of hip height (measured at home), so she fells in a class Small Frame Cow/ Midsize Miniature.
She is wonderful mum, she loves a proper butt scratch and of course she will follow bucket with sheep nuts just about everywhere.

~All girls are pending pick up now~

~To give away to a good home~
4X black hens (not solid black), age between 2-4 years. I am replacing with young birds with better basic colour. The girls don't look the prettiest at the moment as they molt and are with roosters. They will make nice addition to your backyard, they make lovely pets and are great broodies.
First come, first served when it comes to looks and ages of the girls ( I can't tell exact age of all as some lost the coloured rings)

Young roosters of various colours (not for pot), $5 each.

Please note - I would like to give a chance to more than one home to get a lovely pet with benefit of few eggs, so no more than 3 birds per pick up. Thanks😊
