What you do to get fish n chips when your on the south side of Whananaki…Phoenix’s first swim and was the first one to cross. Stood like darling at the takeaway shop…. Some saddle cleaning to do now though!
Todays adventure consisted of riding along the beach!
Can you guess what Phoenix and I have been working on lately?🤩💕 strange to think he came out of the wild 6months ago completely wild and now doing moves like this.
One happy girl and her pony❤️
Phoenix popping over a little jump or two 💕also it’s not very often that I see him have a snooze in the paddock during the day but when I do, I try and see if he’ll let me come and sit with him. Which is not yet achieved but we are getting closer each time.

First time seeing the truck today, and in his own time he wondered up the ramp. He was in within 2min! (I have sped up the first clip) i didn’t have any expectations if he would walk in or not but if he did I only walked in and turned around and walked out. He thought the turning was a little scary but with repetition this should soon be conquered.
Very proud of his efforts today💕
We tested out the big blue tarp today out in the 60m x 40m arena which was also our first proper ride in there too. He was super confident and only got a little unsure when the wind got under it and lifted it up a little on one side but was very brave and continued.
He’s really becoming the coolest pony!
First walk woth me on 🤩
And we are off 🦄 this morning he gave the biggest smile, neighing to me and fast walking up to me in the paddock when I was saying goodmorning to everyone (the horses)🥰 just a shame I wasn’t fast enough to get it on video! (Hopefully next time I’ll be ready)He hasn’t done this before so it was really heartwarming seeing him open up in this way❤️
Preperations for triming feet
After last weeks medical event Phoenix had some time off to recover, heal and socialise. Today I resumed working with him and continued with the general handling, “the basics” of care.
With the weather being terrible we have been lucky to be able to work inside today. I made a start getting him comfortable with picking up his feet at liberty. It took him not long to understand the idea, however with his back legs he wanted to face up to me instead of standing still and picking up his leg, but using the carrot stick to guide him to stay straight we managed to pick up both back legs.
Phoenix has only been here for 3 weeks, but has already a big place in our hearts❤️
Phoenix and Audi having their Sunday roll in the sun 💞
Adventure time
Phoenix had his first adventure today and spent time hand grazing. And also had his first visit to the round pen where most his next steps in life will be established.
Phoenix agrees to carrots
This morning we had a short session on backing up and coming towards me with light pressure from the rope and working more with my body language. We also brought the carrots out to see if we can use a different treat as reinforcement and I think he agrees they taste yummy after he was a little hesitant about them yesterday.
Day 9 grooming phoenix
Today marks the start of day 9.
Here is where we are at today!
He is getting pretty confident around humans and all going on at his new home.
After giving him a few days to introduce myself and our northland grasses - he still hasn’t discovered the other food, like Dunstan Horsefeeds or Fiber Fresh Equine - New Zealand like fiber boost or Equifibre lucerne pro, so trying to find other ways to start giving him the EquiBrew - we worked towards getting him happy to get a halter on at liberty which we succeeded on day 7. Enjoyed a lovely groom this morning and learning about pressure release in the most relaxed manner🥰
Phoneix - day 8 touching of the head
Day 7 - Phoenix
Today marks one week since the arrival of Phoenix, and he has come such a long way already in such a short time❤️
Phoenix day 5
The the art of patience.
Patience is a valuable tool when working with a large flight animal with a small brain. Everything new you introduce will take time to process.
“good things come to those who wait.”
Phoenix showing steady progress ❤️
Pheonix’s first human interaction
Day one:
Today seemed very successful. He’s settled in really well over night and was alert and happy.
Since today is our first session of the challenge I chose to stay out of the yard and offered hay/grass through the fence. He’s very sensible for his age which we have guessed to be somewhere between 10-14 as he’s got quite sharp teeth from what we can see on the outside but also looking at the joints in his legs and the information Kelly has shared through the database they have which he was spotted in 2017 in Argo Valley and haven’t seen since before arriving in the yards from zone 20.
As Phoenix stands in a yard we have to keep track of keeping it clean as part of the worm control. He was not fazed at all about the wheelbarrow nor me shoveling it up.
