Dried chicory root is considered beneficial for dogs due to its prebiotic properties. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that serve as food for probiotic bacteria, which are beneficial microorganisms present in the digestive system. When dogs consume dried chicory root, the prebiotic fibers pass through the stomach and small intestine without being fully digested, reaching the colon where they can selectively promote the growth and activity of beneficial probiotic bacteria.

Switching Flavours Slowly

When switching flavours, do so gradually as abrupt changes in diet can lead to tummy upsets. Transitioning should be done over a period of 7 to 10 days, with a slow increase in the new food and an equally slow decrease in the old food. Start by adding just 25% of the new Taste of the Wild flavour to your dog or cat’s usual meal, with 75% of the old flavour. Gradually, increase the proportion of new food until you are feeding only the new food. By doing this, you give your dog’s digestive system enough time to adapt to the new flavour.

Picky Eaters? Switch it up!
If you have a picky eater at home, then alternating flavours of their favourite Taste of the Wild food may just be the trick you need. A switch-up may entice them to eat more and as a result, keep them healthy. Keep in mind that overly picky eaters should be examined by a veterinarian to ensure there isn’t an underlying condition that caused their intolerance for certain foods.

Why Consider Switching Flavours?

Before we dive into the process of switching flavours, it’s important to understand why you might want to do so. Firstly, it’s important to keep things interesting for your animal. They might just get bored of eating the same thing every day and would appreciate some variety in their diet. Secondly, if they’ve been eating the same flavour for a long time, their taste buds might have become acclimatised, and they may not enjoy the food as they used to. Switching to a different flavour will give their taste buds a new experience, which can encourage them to eat more.

The best way of moving from one type of pet food to a more grain-free version is to provide both types of food for a while and slowly alter the amounts of each so the transition is gradual. Begin by substituting their current grain food with a grain-free variety in small amounts. Slowly increase the amount until it is completely replaced. If your pet has any adverse reactions to the new food, such as diarrhoea, it may be best to decrease the amount or opt for a hypoallergenic variety. Additionally, it is important to speak with your vet as they can provide advice and tailored diet plans.

One of the primary benefits of a grain-free diet for dogs and cats is that it is less likely to cause digestive issues or allergies. Grains are a common cause of digestive issues in pets, such as excessive gas, vomiting, or diarrhoea. What’s more, some pets are allergic to grains, which can result in skin rashes, itchy eyes, and other allergic reactions. Another advantage of grain-free diets is that they can reduce digestive issues by providing higher-quality proteins, fats, and carbohydrates which keeps your pet feeling satisfied. And whilst many grain-free formulas aren’t completely carbohydrate-free, they generally contain fewer carbohydrates, which is beneficial for pets that are prone to weight gain.

As pet owners, we often wonder about the best diet for our furry companions. The question arises: should animals, who are naturally omnivores, be eating grain-free?

Cats, being true carnivores, require a grain-free diet to maintain optimal health. On the other hand, dogs, as omnivores, can tolerate and benefit from consuming grains and carbohydrates.

However, it is still advisable to limit the amount of grains in their diet as they can often serve as mere fillers in many pet foods.

We'll round up the weekend on a high! Thank you so much for these kind words.

"We feed our Springer Spaniel Puppy the TOTW High Praire food, and he is doing so good! Not to mention LOVES it! When we bought him, he was on a cheaper food so we straight away did the switch. Just the look of the kibble and smelling the two, it was such a massive difference and you could really tell how good the TOTW one is in comparison. He is a really happy pup with lots of energy and a happy belly =)"

It can be tempting to stay cooped up inside during the colder months, but your pet still needs stimulation, exercise, and fresh air. Make sure your dog still gets their daily walks and playtime outside (just make it shorter if it's particularly cold).

Cats also need some physical and mental exercise, so try purchasing some new toys or creating an indoor environment that encourages exploration and play.

Let's stay active!

Just like humans, pets feel the cold too. While some dog breeds can withstand colder temperatures, it's always best to take precautions. Get your dog a cosy sweater or jacket and invest in some warm bedding for your cat. This will help insulate them from the cold and create a comfortable space for them to snuggle up in.

Bring your pets inside during cold weather. Keep your animals inside, at least during the night when the temperature really drops. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold.

If pets can’t come indoors, you should make sure they are protected by a dry, draft-free enclosure large enough to allow them to sit and lie down, but small enough to hold in the pet’s body heat. Raise the floor a few inches off the ground and supply blankets or a warm mat and turn the enclosure away from wind gusts.
