Every animal deserves a loving home – but right now, we have over 160 still waiting for theirs. So this month, we're showing a little extra Love for Long Stays! Will you join us?

From 6 to 21 September, adoption for long-stay animals will be by donation/koha for the right home. Our longest-waiting residents around the country – like Tyson here, waiting at our Whanganui Centre – deserve to find their loving families, and we’re making it a little easier to welcome them into yours.

Our SPCA Kid's Photography Competition is BACK - with an iPad and 5 digital cameras up for grabs thanks to our friends at Xtreme Productivity! 🤩📸

This competition is a fun and creative way for the young people in your life to get behind the lens! This year's theme is 'Animals Being Animals' - so we want to see photos of animals showing off their natural behaviours! Think: cats scratching, dogs digging, goats climbing or ducks splashing 🙌

Whether the star of the photoshoot is a household pet, a farm animal, or animal in the wild, entries need to be in by Sunday 12 October. With a chance to win an Apple iPad or 1 of 5 digital cameras, it's time to get snapping!

🐶🐾🏝 Ever wanted to support SPCA Rorotonga? Nows your chance! 🏝🐾🐶

We have a super thoughtful staff member heading over and they are wanting to take some supplies to drop off to the center there. We are looking to include donations of dog leads and collars so if you are in a position to contribute please do so by the 16.08.25.

You can drop any leads or collars in to Napier or Hastings SPCA, or cash donations for our team to buy some to add to the collection. This is a great opportunity to pay it forward and support those less fortunate - thank you!

The verbal and sometimes physical abuse towards our SPCA Centre staff is sadly not a localised issue. Our Hawke's Bay team have spoken out on the abuse received from the public, which mainly stems from a misunderstanding of SPCA's role - which is a charity that is here to help sick, injured, abused, neglected or vulnerable animals - not a rehoming service for those who have decided they no longer want their healthy pets.

While there are exceptions to that rule where space and resources allow, many of our Centres often don't have the capacity to take in people's pets - vulnerable animals must be prioritised, and some members of the public aren't aware of this.

“Some of our staff have been spat on, they’ve had cats physically thrown at them, our area manager’s been punched,” says Centre Manager Tamra. Verbal attacks, social media attacks, and emotional abuse were all almost daily occurrences nationwide.

We currently have four cats awaiting homes who have each been with us for quite a while now - meaning their adoption fees are all discounted by 30%. It would be so wonderful to see them all find their furever homes soon!

🚩 A massive shout out to the team at EFFICIENT MOVERS. We have just had a fantastic custom built cat tower donated to our center, that has been delivered to us from Auckland. As a charity we rely heavily on our local superstars to get the job done - EFFICIENT sure do live up to their name. Thanks team! 🐾 🚚 🐾🛻🐾 🚛 🐾
