SPCA Napier Our page covers all the latest updates from our Napier SPCA Centre We do everything we can to ensure all animals receive the love and respect they deserve!

SPCA Hawke's Bay provide the local community with an essential service, advocating on behalf of animals through education and enforcement, when necessary. We are a non-government funded charity and we a funded solely on the support from our local community. Every year we care for thousands of lost, sick, injured, abandoned and abused animals. We rescue animals from harmful situations, attend hundr

eds of animal emergencies, and investigate hundreds of complaints about the ill-treatment of animals. SPCA Hawke's Bay has the power to protect all animals from abuse, neglect, and abandonment, including prosecuting people under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. Although we work on behalf of all animals, we are also here to serve you, the community of Hawke's Bay. We offer a range of services

Did you know that animals with white or light-coloured coats have a higher risk of skin cancer? โ˜€๏ธ These animals often have less fur on areas around their noses, mouths and ears, so these spots are more susceptible to sun damage.

Tilly is just one cat who suffered from skin cancer on her ears. Thankfully, she came into SPCA's care and our vet team were able to perform surgery to stop the cancer from spreading ๐Ÿ™

If you have a pet with white or light-coloured fur, be sure to apply pet-friendly sunscreen to their skin, and ensure they have shady spots to relax and play this summer. Learn more on our site: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/tillys-story

As of today, it's easier for tenants to keep pets in New Zealand. Here's what you need to know ๐Ÿก ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ”‘ From 1 December 2025, you can ask your landlord for written consent to have a pet in your home.
โœ… Your landlord must say yes to this request, unless they have reasonable grounds to say no, like property suitability or bylaw restrictions.
โœ๏ธ Your landlord must respond to your request within 21 days. If they don't, or they say no without a good reason, they could be fined up to $1,500.
๐Ÿ’ธ If consent to have a pet is given, your landlord can charge you a pet bond of up to two weeks' rent. They can also set reasonable conditions, like requiring certain cleaning tasks at the end of your tenancy.
๐Ÿ™… Your landlord can't ask you for a pet bond, or introduce new conditions, for any existing pets they approved before today.

In a recent survey, 60% of respondents who don't currently own a pet said they'd like to adopt one โ€“ which equates to roughly 440,000 New Zealand households. In an overpopulation crisis, these changes could be huge, getting more animals into the responsible, loving homes they deserve.

โš ๏ธ Dogs die in hot cars - donโ€™t risk their lives โš ๏ธ

Despite SPCA reminding dog owners of this important message every year, cases of dogs left inside cars still make up a staggering 10% of all welfare complaints we receive over the summer months. The message just isnโ€™t sinking in.

In a recent case, one of our Inspectors was alerted to a dog left inside a hot car in Wellington. While it was 22 degrees outside, the temperature inside the car had skyrocketed, and the dog was showing signs of severe heat stress (panting, drooling, and shade-seeking on the floor).

The owner was located, and showed no concern for the welfare of their dog. Despite the owner initially protesting, our Inspector managed to remove the dog, provide it with water, and issued the owner with a $300 fine.

Read more about this story, and find downloadable resources (including a handy flyer to keep in your car to distribute as needed) on our site: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/dont-risk-their-lives

Help us to spread the word - parking in the shade and cracking the windows isn't good enough. If you love them, don't leave them ๐Ÿ’™

Meet our beautiful girl Hazel โค๏ธ

This sweet young pup has had a rough start to life. Battling a nasty case of giardia, it didn't dampen her spirit.

Hazel is naturally confident and curious, and now that she's healthy and free, she's making up for lost time! She's likes to explore in our play area and soaks up all the love from people - she just needs a patient adopter who can help her build skills and confidence at her own pace.

Could you be the home for her? You can apply via her link on our website.

โš ๏ธ Keep your pets, farmed animals and horses safe this Guy Fawkes โš ๏ธ

Sadly, with fireworks expected around the country tonight (and residual fireworks being let off at random over the coming weeks), itโ€™s important to take precautions to ensure the safety of your pets.

๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Please ensure your petโ€™s microchip details are up to date. We cannot stress this enough โ€“ every year, terrified pets go missing after fleeing from fireworks. You can log in and do this at www.animalregister.co.nz
๐Ÿ  Keep pets indoors with windows, doors, and curtains closed.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Make sure pets have an enclosed space where they can hide and feel safe.
โค๏ธ Stay home with your pets where possible.
๐ŸŽ Ensure farm animals including horses are secure, and check fences and surrounding areas for anything that could cause injury.
๐ŸŽต Turn on the radio for background music.

To assist with that final tip, weโ€™re again promoting โ€œConcert for Animalsโ€ - a specially curated evening of soothing classical music airing from 6pm to midnight on 5 November on RNZ Concert. The programme offers a calming alternative to help mask the noise of fireworks, so be sure to tune in.

Animals around the country are crying out for foster homes ๐Ÿฅบ

With the arrival of warmer weather and kitten season in full swing, our Centres are overflowing with vulnerable animals in need. We see more enclosures fill up every day, and weโ€™re running out of space. We desperately need help to reduce the pressure on our staff and Centre volunteers โ€“ and thatโ€™s where you come in.

By becoming a foster parent, you can give cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and even farm animals a temporary home to help them recover and grow, while freeing up space for the next animal in critical need. We provide food, medication, and equipment โ€“ all at no cost to you! You provide love, time, and a safe place to heal ๐Ÿ’™

And the best news is, almost everyone can foster! Whether you work full-time, have kids or pets, share your space with flatties, or can only commit for a short time โ€“ weโ€™d love to hear from you.

Give our animals a helping hand this summer season โ€“ become an SPCA foster hero today! ๐Ÿพ www.spca.nz/foster25

NAPIER IS OFFICIALLY FULLY BOOKED!!

๐Ÿ“ข๐ŸšฉSpecial Announcement!๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿ“ข
HASTINGS IS FULLY BOOKED

The team at SPCA have been working hard to bring a FREE CANINE VACCINATION DRIVE to Hawkes Bay.

On November 01, both Napier and Hastings Centers will be closed for the day so we can vaccinate & microchip vulnerable dogs in our community, most at risk of contracting (and sharing) Parvovirus.

We know vaccinating your animal can be an extra expense that some owners are struggling with right now - and we are here to help.

If you think your dog might benefit from this free service, then please the QR code below to register for this event!!

Priority will go to applicants within our highest parvo effected areas - we only have 50 spots available per center, so get in quick!

From hissing and back-arching, to purring and cuddles, Empurress Purry Pants (yes, that's her name!) came a very long way in SPCA's care! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿฉต

Brought into our Napier Centre after being found in a trap, Empurress did everything she could to be appear tough - though that facade melted away pretty quickly, once she realised just how nice cuddles and chin-scratches are.
