Benji was telling me to hurry up and get his pool ready for his Hydrotherapy. The deep stare.
When I started taking photos instead I got told off with a bark. 🥰

Benji is 14yrs old and comes to Hydrotherapy every week to stretch out his arthritic joints.

NB: Excuse the fuzzy photo that's what happens when you drop your phone in the water!

🤔Why do therapists work closely with your dog’s multidisciplinary team (MDT)?

🌟Some owners are faced with managing their dog’s condition in the last few years of their lives, while others are challenged with this from a much younger age. No matter where your dog is along their journey, having an awesome multidisciplinary team to support you and your dog can make a massive difference. Any or all of the following people may be involved in your dog’s MDT:
👉You, the owner (of course!)
👉Registered Veterinary Surgeon
👉Veterinary Nurse
👉Hydrotherapist
👉Physiotherapist
👉Behaviourist
👉Acupuncturist
👉Groomer

🧩Just for a moment, consider your dog to be a puzzle. Each member of the team, (including you!), will have the skills and knowledge to find one or two pieces to fit the puzzle. In cooperation, we are able to fit the puzzle pieces together, and appropriately manage multiple aspects of your dog’s life. However, if we choose to work alone, it may take us a much longer time, if at all, to find and connect the pieces of the puzzle that will allow us to make the greatest change in the patient’s life.

🌟The therapist will be attentive to the individual needs and conditions of each dog in their care, to deliver a safe and effective service that fits within their scope of practice. They might be able to recognise signs of conditions and interpret feedback signals but will need to refer back to another MDT member, such as the RVS or physiotherapist if there are any concerns about the patient’s progression or status of health. The therapist might rely on this input from a member of the MDT to assess the dog's behaviour, progress and any potential issues that may arise during therapy sessions. This collaborative approach helps in monitoring the dog's overall well-being and effectiveness in therapy.

🌟In conclusion, it is vital to have clear and effective communication between all members of the multidisciplinary team to create the best possible treatment outcome for the dog. By demonstrating clinical reasoning and sound decision-making with an evidence base, confidence will be inspired by the owner and the MDT members that the therapist works with.

If you saw the article on stuff. You know about Coco the s**t tzu.
Here is a short clip of her hydrotherapy journey so far. From day 1 to today.
It makes my heart sing to recieve the last clip today of Coco taking 5 good steps (that were caught on video) by herself. 🥰🥰
Still a long way to go but love seeing the progress.

🤔 How do you know hydrotherapy is working for your dog? Part 1!

As a hydrotherapist, it is important to be able to monitor and evaluate your canine patients in order to determine that the hydrotherapy treatment is working for them. Feedback from the dog, as well as your own clinical assessment and judgement, will enable you to tailor and enhance your treatment plan to see the most improvement. Hydrotherapy can be used to treat and manage a huge variety of canine conditions, including:
👉 injury rehabilitation
👉 disease management
👉 weight loss
👉 fitness

🌟 It is therefore important to determine your treatment SMART goals, which in turn will reflect your desired treatment outputs. So, how do you know that your treatment is working for your dog and what are the outcome measures of hydrotherapy treatment?

🌟 Let's start with defining what an outcome measure is. An outcome measure is a tool used to assess a canine patient’s current health status, and may provide a score, interpretation of results or categorisation of the dog. Prior to the implementation of any treatment, an outcome measure will provide baseline data which can be used to determine a suitable treatment plan. Once treatment has commenced, the same outcome measure can be used to track progress and determine if there is any change in the patient.

Stay tuned for Part 2 - coming shortly!
