Over the past 12 months there has been many dogs pass away that we have met and loved, however when I do a tribute post for a dog that has sadly passed, I focus on the dogs / families that we have known since we first took over the business (otherwise I would be posting a very sad post every week). So if you dog or cat has passed away and I have not written a tribute, please know that we are always saddened when we receive the news, they have all been a big part of our lives.

Today we remember: Dodge, the big cruisey Rottweiler
Well big boy, it was a shock to hear of your sudden passing. You went to the vet to have a lump removed but it turned out to be much worse than anyone expected so you family made the heartbreaking decision to let you go.
We met your family many, many years ago, not long after we had taken over the business.
There was Bunny (RIP) the Cairn terrier, a happy and bubbly girl and then there was you – 15 weeks old.
Your mum and dad came to see us and they were a little upset as you had failed puppy school and it was suggested you would not make a good family pet. Oh how WRONG they were.
That’s when you started coming here for Daycare and once you were a little older, boarding with Bunny.
Dodge, you were gentle, calm and the most loving Rottweiler we have ever met, people friendly, dog friendly and always very well behaved.
After Bunny passed away your family adopted Biddy (Cairn Terrier), having little dogs around didn’t faze you one bit, you were a good big brother.
You have stayed with us many times over the years and we are so very sad that you have gone; it always makes it harder when these things happen unexpectedly.
Shine your light big boy , love and thoughts to your family who we know will be missing their big boy companion.
Without a doubt, you were always faithful and true to your family Dodge
Much love
Steve, Raewyn and Ben

Thank you to those families who have already dropped off donation for the Takiwatanga Sanctuary , we are still accepting donations until this Thursday, 8th of August and then again after our holiday break from the 15th of August to the end of September

Im not sure how to word this but something has to be done and with urgency. Rescue is absolutely crazy and we have rescues closing because of stress and being overwhelmed with the amount of animals that are requiring care and rescue staff having break downs and meltdowns Last week alone I turned away 61 dogs. I just dont have room for anymore. Two local horses found tied to a tree for a week without food or water one dead and the other one in a desperate situation, a cat colony with a large number of cats and kittens in a bad situation. We are haemorrhaging, financially, emotionally, physically as are every other rescue we work with. The vengeance and vitriol from key board warriors who say put them down, hunt out the owners and make them pay, your a rescue do more please please please come and volunteer , Start at 6am ensuring kennels are clean and sterilised, dogs are health checked, bathed, fed, bedding removed and washed and dried ready for the next day, Bowls are cleaned, fresh water is changed, Animals are fed out, horse feet are picked, groomed, brushed, Dogs are walked, exercised, socialised, paper work completed, donations and grants applied for, vet appointments made, transport animals to groomers, vet appointments done, telephone calls are answered, pleading for donations of food, blankets, towels. Animal bedding washed daily amounts to 60 beds a day needing to be washed and dried. Finishing your day at midnight after ensuring animals are rugged up, safe for the night, warm given that last pat. Enough is enough we have to stop this. Yes i choose to do this, yes it is often rewarding but its also soul destroying. But please dont add to our situation, get your animals desexed,. We know everyone is struggling with the cost of living but spare a thought for those of us that arent funded to do what we do and think about fostering, donating, sorting out your old towels and blankets, food bowls and give them to your local rescue. There are small things that can be done to help us out and we really do appreciate the support even if it is just a kind word to keep us going.

Rest Peaceful Rex
We first met your mum and dad in 2009, not long after we took over the business, they brought dear Freddie (RIP) to come and stay with us. After Freddie passed away, we got to meet you. You were 6 months old at the time, a typical Jack Russell, fun loving, full of energy, independent, but still loved a cuddle.
We know you didn’t like the thunder, but you loved the company of the other dogs and a good run / sniff in the paddock and liked to chase the ball. Steve describes you as “a good little lad”.
You came to stay with us a few weeks ago but after your return home you weren’t quite yourself. A couple of visits to the vets and then you seemed to perk up, however your health took a turn for the worst and your family made the heartbreaking decision to let you go.
At the age of 14, you have lived a good life Rex, with a family that loved you very much.
We are saddened that you have gone but we have been privileged to get to know you and your family, who we know are heartbroken.
Sending big hugs to your mum and dad, we know how empty their home will be
Safe Travels Rex and thank you for being a big part of our lives
Kindest regards
Steve, Raewyn, Ben and Chloe

We had a visit from Steve one of the owners of Takiwatanga Sanctuary, he was collecting some of the donations we have received for them. All donations are gratefully accepted, so remember to check out if you have anything at home that may be helpful for them. Photos of the first group of dos having a run around the back paddock today. The other paddock is rather waterlogged and a bit muddy, so a change of scenery today.

Earthworks going on next door to the dogs exercise paddock, the dogs are not use to seeing anyone next door, so a bit of barking to let the digger know it shouldn't be there :) A rather random down pour just after 2 o'clock, so dogs inside for a bit of a rest.

In Brief:
Takiwatanga Sanctuary Trust is a Registered Charitable Trust based in Otorohanga
They rescue and re-home dogs
Train therapy dogs for placement in families with differently abled children
Offer equine therapy for adolescents with mental health issues
They have an on-site clinic and support the community with micro- chipping, flea treatments etc.
Take therapy dogs to rest homes and hospitals.
The founders have a background in health, so offer respite care for families and individuals with autism, disability or mental health issues. Families or individuals can have a break and an animal experience; there are over 600 animals on site including mini horses, horses, cows, sheep, geese, turtles, dogs and everything else in-between.
They currently have 60 dogs/puppies they are caring for (some out on foster) and are in desperate need as Grants are more difficult to get and with the cost of living crisis, the majority of what they do is currently self funded.
They have a face book page and featured on TVNZ Good Sorts if you want to know more information

Donations can be dropped off at our office during office hours (8 - 9.30am or 4 – 5.30pm Monday – Saturday, or Sundays between 4 and 5.30pm)

Takiwatanga is the Maori word for Autism and translates to: in their own time and in their own space, the guiding principles of the Sanctuary.

To existing clients, we ask that in Lieu of personal gifts for our team you consider donating to this worthy Charity instead.

Sorry about the lack of photos over the weekend, the weather has been less than favourable , surface flooding and lots of mud with constant rain again today. I would just like to take a moment to remember Dixie (Husky x) who recently passed away. Dixie had far to many homes in her short life and was picked up by Anne from Freedadog Rescue and we were going to foster her. But before she even arrived here, one of our clients put her hand up and adopted Dixie sight unseen. Her new family described her as the sweetest and gentlest girl who quickly settled into their home. Unfortunately Dixies human Dad (Bruce) became very unwell and passed away last year. Dixie has been a huge comfort to her mum, Michelle, and we know Dixies sudden passing with have left a big hole in your heart. But thank you for taking on a rescue dog and giving her the very best forever home. Rest in Light sweet Dixie and big hugs to you Michelle.
