Arthritis in dogs is most commonly osteoarthritis - inflammation of joints most commonly seen as dogs get older, influenced by genetics, body condition throughout life and presently and previous joint injuries and conditions.

Dogs are often stoic and do their best for as long as they can. The signs of arthritis are subtle, such as being slower getting up, slower when going for walks and more deliberate negotiating stairs or getting into vehicles. As the arthritis gets worse dogs that previously could, are not able to jump into higher vehicles without help.

Parvovirus in Dogs - Understanding Vaccination and its Importance

Parvovirus was first recognised in dogs in the late 1970s. Before vaccinations became available it spread rapidly and caused many deaths, particularly among puppies.

The first parvovirus vaccine was developed in 1979, and vaccination has since become very effective at preventing infection and disease. Even today, though, we still see cases of parvoโ€”especially in unvaccinated pups. It's a serious illness that causes:

Loss of appetite

Vomiting

Bloody diarrhoea

Rapid dehydration

Weakness

Death

Treatment can be intensive and costly, and sadly, some puppies donโ€™t survive despite the best care.

Why Vaccination Is So Important?

Parvovirus vaccination is almost 100% effective at preventing the disease when given correctly. This is especially important for young puppies. From colostrum or the mother's early milk they get antibodies against various diseases including parvovirus. Within a few months these levels fall to a level that no longer protects them. We use vaccination to stimulate puppies to produce their own, longer lasting antibodies without causing disease. Young puppies don't respond to vaccination until the maternal antibody falls below a certain level.

See https://vetsatscamps.blogspot.com/ for a more indepth explanation of parvovirus vaccination and why the usual recommendation is to vaccinate puppies every 3-4 weeks from 6-8 weeks of age until they are 16 weeks of age and to avoid public places until the pup is fully vaccinated.

Sun Damage is a Problem for Pets

Sun damage is associated with skin problems in cats and dogs.
Animals with white fur and pink skin are most at risk because their skin has little or no pigment.

For white cats (and cats with white patches) the most common problem is sun damage to the ears, the white hairless area on the nose and the eyelids. Sun damage over the years causes subtle changes. These may then go on to become squamous cell carcoma - a skin cancer which can cause ulceration of the nose, eyelids and ears. Treatment often involves surgery.

White dogs are susceptible to sun damage. The area most commonly affected is the belly and the inside of the hindlegs where the skin is pink and the haircoat is thin. Dogs who like to lie on their back in the sun are more at risk. Sun damage causes skin changes, not unlike older people with fair skin who grew up when sunscreen wasnโ€™t a thing.
The affected skin becomes thickened, red and rough and can develop blackheads, crusts, ulcers, blood-blister-like lesions and infection. These skin changes are not reversible and may progress to developing skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma and cutuaneous (of the skin) haemangiosarcoma.

UV light plays a part in a skin disease called discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). This affects the junction between the skin and the darker thicker skin covering the nose of dogs.

The take home message for pets with white fur and pink skin is that sun protection is important.

Keeping your pet out of the sun in the hotter parts of the day (between 10am and 4pm especially in the warmer months) makes the most difference. There are sunsuits available for dogs and sunscreen can be used on cats ears and the belly and top of the nose of dogs.

Do you notice your dog stopping play to itch, shaking their head, constantly licking their feet or belly or even waking up during the night and waking you up too? Have you tried over the counter sprays and shampoos from the pet shop that make little difference?

There are various reasons for increased itchiness in dogs. The most common cause, especially in the humid, warm weather is allergic skin disease. This is similar to eczema. We can help your dog with medications to help stop the itch and treat infections so you can all sleep easily. More information in the blog โ€˜Why is my dog so itchy?โ€™ on the Scamps website.

Understanding Common Health Issues

There are many reasons why cats lose weight. Two common onesโ€”diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidismโ€”can cause significant weight loss even though the cat has a good or even ravenous appetite. In addition to weight loss, cats with diabetes often drink much more water than usual. Both of these conditions are linked to hormones being out of whack and can be treated.

Diabetes mellitus occurs when there is a deficiency of the hormone insulin, which is necessary for cells to use glucose in the bloodstream properly. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. In cats with diabetes they do not produce enough insulin and their insulin is not as effective. Overweight cats are particularly at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes similar to overweight humans.
Diabetes in cats is easily diagnosed with a blood and urine test showing high glucose levels. Diabetes is treatable with injectable insulin and a diet that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. In some cases, the diabetes can even be reversed, and the cat no longer requires insulin. However, other cats may need insulin for life.

Without treatment, cats with diabetes continue to lose weight and can develop diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition that can be fatal. Maintaining a healthy weight goes a long way to preventing diabetes in cats from occurring.

Hyperthyroidism is a common condition in older cats caused by increased production of thyroid hormone from the thryoid glands. Thyroid hormone ramps up the bodyโ€™s metabolism and when too much is produced cats lose weight. These cats are often skinny with scruffy coat.

A blood test can easily diagnose this condition and there are effective treatment options which includes daily medication options and an injection which in many cases fixes the problem.

Left untreated, cats with hyperthyroidism will continue to lose weight and may become dangerously thin and develop diseases that may not be fixed.
Both conditions can be managed at home. The priority when treating to cats is to fix the problem with the least stress and hassle for cats and their people.

Whilst there is something endearing about a fat cat there are no health benefits to being overweight. Chubby cats have an increased risk of developing ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ž ๐Ÿ ๐๐ข๐š๐›๐ž๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ mellitus, which interestingly, is not a common issue for overweight dogs.

Body condition scoring can be done, although I find it trickier to do for cats than dogs. To keep it simple the width across the lumbar spine (between the ribs and pelvis) should be narrower than the depth of the trunk. The dpeth of the trunk of a cat with a healthy weight should be 1.5 to 1.75 times their width. The points of the vertebrae along the middle of the back and the bones of the pelvis either side of the spine should be felt with gentle pressure. If your cat is getting wide across the back and looking more of a square shape than a rectangle it is very likely they are overweight.

Putting a cat on a diet can be challenging so preventing them getting chubby in the first place is best. If they are overweight they are eating more than they require and their diet needs tweaking. Cat biscuits tend to be have more energy per amount fed and so merely reducing the amount fed is often not successful and leads to a hungry, vocal cat. For the sake of peace and harmony the cat usually wins the food restriction battle. There are biscuits available with less calories per amount fed and soft food has more bulk so can be an option to reduce the calories consumed and have the cat feel satisfied.

Cats more than dogs, can get diseases that cause fluid to build up in their abdomen which can make them appear fat but often the bones along the back are easily felt. These cats need to see the vet promptly as this indicates a significant health problem.

The Hills BFI index helps determine if your cat is a healthy weight and lists common health issues of overweight cats. The link can be found on

I prefer to use body condition score (BCS) or BFI (body fat index). When a pet has an ideal BCS or BFI, they are at their ideal weight. Dogs come in many shapes and sizes. This method works well for the individual animal, regardless of their conformation.

A body condition score estimates the leanness of your pet. For dogs, the main points are:

โ€ข Feel the ribs but not see them (when running your fingers across or perpendicular to the ribs). This assesses the fat under the skin. In lean dogs, there is little thickness, and in overweight dogs, there is more.
โ€ข Your dog should have a discernible waist when viewed from above. There should be a narrowing over the lumbar area โ€“ behind the ribs and in front of the pelvis.
โ€ข Your dog should have a tuck when viewed from the side. There should be an upward slope from the bottom of the chest (sternum) to the p***c bone (between the hind legs).
โ€ข Some breeds have a lean conformation, while others are more stocky, so the extent of the waist and tuck does vary.
โ€ข The points of the spinous processes of the spine along the midline of the back over the ribs and lumbar area should be able to be felt with gentle pressure. If they can be felt easily or seen on short-haired dogs, the dog is too lean.
โ€ข The pelvic bones where attach to the spine should be felt with gentle pressure. If they are easily felt or seen on short-haired dogs, the dog is too lean.

Some breeds are more challenging than others to keep lean. Labradors would be a common example, and most dogs have perfected the โ€œIโ€™d be interested in a bit of thatโ€ look whenever food is around. Service dogs are typically at an ideal weight โ€“ take a look at the working dogs the next time you pass through the airport.

The dogโ€™s body condition score tells us if the dog is being fed too much or too little for the amount of energy they use, and the amount of food can be adjusted. Remember, treats contain calories too. Cutting treats into small pieces and finding some non-food-related rewards for your dog can help. Weight loss takes time. Some diseases can cause dogs to lose or gain weight as well.

Labrador dogs were studied throughout their lives, comparing those kept lean (BCS 4-5/9 and Hills BFI 20%) vs. those that were mild to moderately overweight (BCS 6-7/9 and Hills BFI 30%). The researchers showed that, on average, the lifespan was longer for the lean dogs, and chronic diseases, including arthritis, were less severe and affected the lean dogs later in their lives.

When arthritis starts to become a problem for overweight dogs, weight loss is the change that makes the most difference. Weight loss takes time, and it becomes even more challenging at this stage of life as habits are ingrained and the dogโ€™s mobility is reduced.

In summary, quality of life is important. Keeping a lean body weight throughout your dogโ€™s life increases the chance of a longer, healthier life and reduces the impact of chronic disease.

Chronic pain is a persistent or waxing and waning pain. A common cause in pets, especially in the second half of life, is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is inflammation of the joints, which over time may lead to an increase in the size of affected joints and a decrease in the range of motion.

Lameness is relative. A pet with one sore leg and three non-painful legs will appear worse than a pet with multiple sore legs. To many people, a dog with arthritis in all four legs doesnโ€™t seem to be lame. Just as in humans, arthritis begins with waxing and waning pain. Osteoarthritis in pets is a progressive condition, meaning it tends to worsen over time. The following signs may be seen as the arthritis progresses in dogs:

Slower to get up from rest

Stiffness after rest that the decreases as the dog gets moving

Less able to cope with exercise and may lag towards the end of a walk

Lame and more tired after longer periods of exercise, for example, longer walks on the weekends

More cautious and slower going up and down stairs

Hesitation or difficulty jumping up; a common example is jumping into the back of the car

Less enthusiasm for boisterous play

In cats:

Less able to jump onto higher levels; you may see hesitation when jumping up. Your cat may use a chair to reach a higher surface that they could previously jump onto from the floor

Slower and more cautious on stairs

The signs of chronic limb pain can be quite subtle, especially in the earlier stages of osteoarthritis. There are various causes of osteoarthritis and other potential causes of the symptoms described. Having your pet checked by a vet is recommended to determine the source of the discomfort. There are a number of options available to manage chronic pain and improve your petโ€™s comfort and quality of life.

Euthanasia is the practice of ending the life of a pet to limit the pet's suffering.

Euthanasia of a dearly loved pet is not easy. An at home euthanasia is more peaceful than going to a vet clinic. It is more personal for you and more comfortable for your pet.

This is how I help pets pass peacefully. Sedation is the first, slower step. Sedation is given with a simpler injection which is less stressful for your pet. They slowly get very sleepy. Sedation works best when your pet is relaxed. The home environment is familiar and much less stressful than a clinic.

Euthanasia itself requires an overdose of anesthetic drug to be injected into a vein. Most commonly a catheter is placed in a vein in a leg. After sedation your pet is barely aware of this step. The injection that ends the petโ€™s life works reasonably quickly. With the pet already very sleepy, we mostly notice the breathing stop as the pet loses consciousness and passes away.

You can personalise the experience for your pet and yourself. Pets may be put to sleep in a special place inside or outside. Smaller pets may be held. Friends and family and other pets may attend.

You are given the time you need to be with your pet during and after the euthanasia procedure. An at home euthanasia is not rushed.

The aftercare options for your pet after euthanasia are burial at home or cremation. Pets may be cremated separately and their ashes returned to their family. There are a number of options available for the return of ashes.

As the weather warms up and becomes more humid dogs with allergic skin disease tend to have more issues.

Ear infections are common in these dogs. The odd scratch is just housekeeping, increased scratching, shaking of the head and ears, redness on the inside of the ear flap and discharge in and around the ear opening are strong clues that there is a problem.

We sort the problem by examining the ear and looking at a sample under the microscope (cytology) to see what is causing the problem. Cytology also guides the choice of treatment.

The ear is usually cleaned and treatment of ear drops prescribed.
Check ups are very useful to see that an infection has completely resolved. Some dogs have frequent ear problems and for this a long term medication plan can help.

TIPS FOR TRIMMING DOG'S NAILS
Ideally, a patient, conservative approach is taken with nail clipping from an early age and the dog becomes comfortable with the process and tolerates it well throughout its life.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Whilst getting the job done efficiently is beneficial in the short term, if nail trimming is stressful the dog often becomes less accepting over time to the point that it is such a battle that sedation is needed to trim the nails. https://vetsatscamps.blogspot.com/2024/10/tips-for-clipping-dogs-nails.html
