Interesting first study on the use of balance pads with horses. It appears just 5 mins twice a day over a 4 week period can substantially improve the stability of your horses posture using the multifidus thoracis et lumborum that supports the thoracic and lumbar vertebrate.

Foam pads of varying levels of firmness are marketed to help improve equine balance, with veterinarians and owners reporting anecdotal success. Now, a scientific study on the use of balance pads has been published, and shows promising results.

It’s a long slow process strengthening and stabilising our horses postural muscles. One simple way of beginning on the journey is by creating a neutral feeding stance. Bear has always grazed left fore forward, weighting it to the extent that his left hoof is more splayed. Today is the first time I’ve seen him eat from the ground standing square. The next stage of the journey is to vary his feed heights, including hay bags to encourage more stability and strength.

This is an amazing view of how the back muscles move in the different gaits. It is easy to see from this why an incorrect saddle fit or even a slight unbalanced rider can effect this gait so much.

I love when a horse communicates that I am hitting the right spot. It may be as simple as a myofascial release style hold to elicit relaxing responses from your horse.

The withers, the area of the spinal column that lies in between the shoulder blades and anatomically includes the T3 – T11 vertebrae. Their uniquely prominent (tall) spinous processes act as anchor points for the attachment of numerous elastic ligamentous and connective tissue structures that suspend the forelimbs and neck, bridge the back, as well as interlace the hindquarters into the fascial net of the body.

As such, the withers play a pivotal role in the biomechanics responsible for the fluidity of the horse’s movements, and thus any disturbances to the tissues in this region, even seemingly small ones, affect the horse’s way of going, athleticism and soundness.

Healthy withers are “full,” rounded, symmetrical, comfortable, and blend smoothly and evenly with the horse’s shoulders and neck.

We can help keep this area healthy by promoting good circulation and relieving tension with firm grooming, finger tip massage or even just laying your hands in the area for 2-3 mins.

Started playing around with different feeding positions to aid postural stability and strength. Bear has always feed split leg with all his weight on his left fore, so much so it is half a size larger than his right fore. We are working towards a neutral feeding position to start where his eye is in line with his hip. As this is such a big change it is a gradual process. Bodywork session today showed his right hind was very tight from taking the weight it is not accustomed to but should doing in a balanced stance. It is also helping to lift his thoracic sling and smooth his topline at his withers.

"You can look at pictures all day, you can look at photos, but nothing will cement your understanding of origin, insertion, and function like building the muscles on a 3D model. There is something about making them and attaching them to the skeleton that really deepens your grasp of anatomy. Working with the clay is so much fun! It's like being a kid again, but you get to keep your adult brain and learn something really important. We laughed … a lot. You don't need to be an artist or have any sculpting skills. All you need is curiosity and a desire for a fuller understanding of the equine body." — Tracy Kerby
