My name is Nicki Cherrington, Last Chance Equine was originally founded in 2007 as an equine relief and rehab facility in the thermal wonderland of Rotorua, giving relief, rehabilitation and a last chance of life to unwanted horses destined for slaughter. This page was originally set up to share the progress of the horses we took in from relief to re-education to rehome and beyond. In 2015, I was forced to downsize numbers to almost nil due to relocating to a much smaller property. I have since relocated to the warm shores of Ruawai, a small town near Dargaville in Northland, and unfortunately can only take on needy horses one at a time to rehab and rehome so I have concentrated on providing my equine services to horse owners. I will still offer the once yearly Pro-Bono Behavioural Problem Solving opportunity to one problematic horse/owner as well as physical assistance/support with local horse rescue/uplift (incl cheap transport).

Here's is yet another great post. I see the results from badly applied western saddles far too often as well. Your horse only has ONE back. If you ride, it's your job to keep that back in the best condition - this starts with correctly fitting gear and it's application. This saddle doesn't fit this horse the best, however the post is about the relationship between tree and scapula.

We have come a long way as far as girths go for comfort, now we just have to get the message out there that they don't have to be so tight the horse can't breath. Whenever I see some ignoramus knee their horse in the gut because it's blowing out, I give them a knee in the arse and educate them. Or if I can't reach, at least tell them of my intention... 🦵

Meet Wallace the first mule to win the British dressage

Wallace the Great has certainly lived up to his name after becoming the first mule ever to win a dressage competition in the UK, as previous rules banned him from entering.
Wallace’s rider, Christie Mclean, was recently granted permission to compete in top UK dressage events with her horse/donkey cross and has now won her first official competition with him.

The four-legged contender competed in a British Dressage Quest Club competition at Summerhouse Equestrian in Gloucestershire, seeing off eight horse and pony competitors to claim the winning prize.

I love a good thunderstorm BUT...

I hope everyone fared ok with last night's thunderstorm. I always fear for horses when there's lightning, they seem to attract it. Here, I could hear my lot galloping around, getting split up, calling each other in the darkness between the flashes. Yes I was a little fearful for their wellbeing... All have all four legs still intact this morning, just very very tired. In this video you can hear them galloping and calling each other in the darkness 😭I'm telling them to steady and I hear a reassuring knicker from just behind the fence - sweet Ed thinking I'm calling him. He was snug as a bug in his rug whilst all the others were naked (by their own choice).

The main herd got let into a fresh paddock on Monday.. 😆 the buggers think grass grows on trees! I may have dropped an a-bomb in there, so if you're easily offended I advise you turn the sound OFF. I do love them really 😆

Ooh the Ponchitos are going into Eleven's grazed-out paddock tonight so we can clean up their track a bit before winter. They will be so happy! Eleven on the other hand, may not be as impressed 😆
