An entertaining video to cheer up your rainy weekend featuring some our resident birds, Genie the rainbow lorikeet, Rosie the myna and Birdie the sparrow. They are also so thankful as are we for the donations we have received over the last few days! Nothing goes unnoticed, and we appreciate every cent 💛🥰🦜
We want to give a huge thank you to everyone who has donated in the last couple of weeks! It really helped top us up for winter! ❄️🙏🏻❤️
This is our beautiful male tui Lilo, who is about 4 months old now. He was hand reared from a chick with us and is waiting for his relocation date to go to his new home at the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House ! He’s a bit too friendly to be released but will make an awesome ambassador bird at the kiwi house! ❤️🥰
Enjoy Awa our baby Pukeko enjoying a leaf to break up your 2023 posts! 😆💕
Wow what a year guys! We end 2023 with 854 birds through our doors this year. Currently we have 109 birds in care at present, that’s a lot of mouths to feed ! 2023 we became a registered charity with the help of David Pattemore and Ashley. Each year we are growing bigger and bigger, with other rescues downscaling. We have a DOC native permit now, the species we have come to work with are just incredible and make it all worth it. To everyone who has brought a bird, liked a post, donated, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts we couldn’t run without you.
Happy New Year from the team at Sunnyhills Bird Rescue - Kelsie, Mandy, Marty, Zack, David, Ashley and our volunteers. Bring on 2024!! 🥳🥳
A very happy silvereye release last weekend, these two were successfully raised after being caught by a cat as hatchlings.
🎄CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR Period
We are still open and accepting birds all the way through. We just ask that you come at the assigned time, and don’t be late as we are still continuing our own family festivities in between it all. Don’t wait to bring a bird your cat has caught because you don’t want to interrupt us, we would rather it come and get the help it very much needs. Birds don’t know it’s Christmas time, so we will continue helping them all as usual. 🙏🏻🎄🐦
Happy days as our first 4 sparrows are released for the season. These 4 were all hand raised after being found fallen from their nests or caught by a cat. After 3-4 weeks in care they are independently eating and flying strong. Today was their big flight into their new wonderful life. Kauri, Zahra, Janie & Lana 🐤💕

Sound warning to headphone users 😆 , we need to use earplugs ourselves for these delightful critters ! Starling season has kicked off with a bang, we have 13 in care currently and they certainly make it known. Most of them are the result of their parents poor nest decision. 3 came from a digger air filter, 2 came from an air vent, 4 came from a car bumper 🙈. We will have these guys for 4-6 weeks before they are ready for release, costing roughly $100 per bird for their duration in care. 🐦⬛🐦⬛

Happy days today releasing Percy the Pukeko. This guy was picked up off the road in a very bad way. Euthanasia was on the cards, but we decided to give him a chance, thankfully no broken bones! Now 2 weeks later he’s made a full recovery, stacked on the weight and made his journey back to the wild 🩵🪶💙

Sunday we were called on to relocate a Mother Duck and her brood of 15 ducklings from Hilda Ross Retirement Village. Mother Duck had decided that the village courtyard was a great place to raise her babies, but sadly this concrete paradise was causing nutritional and physical deficiencies on the babies and wasn’t ideal for them to continue growing up there. Here is a video of their release at their new home in Rukuhia 🦆🦆
Today we released 4 ducks we have been raising since ducklings, including Quackers who was brought to us by Hamilton Small Animal Veterinary Centre 🦆🥰 These guys are the cutest little family, although none related, they have banded together and are very happy to be in the wild. Enjoy your life little ones 🦆🦆
Kingfisher release yesterday evening, we have had a large influx of these guys recently. They are common victims to cat attacks and window strike. This guy was one of the lucky ones, he survived a cat attack.
While we aren’t as busy as usual we still have long and short term rehab patients that require feeding and 24/7 care.

Today we released Kowhai the black backed gull. After two weeks of TLC and 5kg worth of fish he got back to his mates at Raglan. Good luck 🐦❤️
