Whether you have just added a four-legged edition to the family or have a furry friend presenting unwanted behaviours, Tails in Training can collectively help you and your dog. Tails in Training is a dog training company, providing ethical and modern puppy/dog training on an individual or group basis. Based in Whangaparaoa, Tails in Training was founded on the desire to advocate for the mental and

physical well-being of all dogs and to ensure all owners can feel confident in their relationships with their extra family member. I am a qualified and experienced Veterinary Nurse, with extensive exposure and training in dog behaviour. My passion for dogs and their nature, has led me to further educate on our canine friends and understand how best we can support them into desirable behaviours and confidence to be the best pooch possible. As I work through further training, I will be working alongside my friend Bruno (a beautiful Labrador!) who I am certain will be a feature on our social media channels frequently, as he is known for stealing the show often! Tails in Training advocate for positive reinforcement and specialise in training all dogs in social interactions, leash walking, unwanted behaviours such as jumping or chewing furniture, recall, barking and dog manners. Our point of difference is the ability to work with dogs of all ages, at all stages of their dog life, regardless of their abilities. Tails in Training strives to provide not only the tools to successfully communicate and enjoy your time with your dog but assists you to understand their behaviour and needs. I keep up to date with the latest research to ensure we are using ethical techniques and tools and following the least intrusive principles, to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort. My Veterinary Nursing background and medical knowledge heightens my ability to identify whether concerns may be of a behavioural or medical origin. Whether you are desperate to get that lead-walking on track, want a regular dog walker, have a niggling question that google is offering far too many conflicting answers to or would like to know more about the services I can offer, please get in touch. I look forward to assisting you in building fun and harmonious relationships with your furry friend.

WHANGAPARAOA, PUPPY PRESCHOOL IS BACK!

Jo is qualified trainer who studied Canine Behaviour and Training at Unitec as well as a Veterinary Nurse with over 5 years experience.

Some of you may have noticed that we took a small hiatus due to resigning from vet nursing in clinic but we have just secured a location in Stanmore Bay and I am very excited to be starting Puppy preschool classes again!

Classes cover a wide range of topics including basic commands, toileting, jumping, mouthing and chewing, walking on a lead, recall, basic healthcare and much more! We have a confidence building night with ball pits, hurdles, weave poles and a little extra for those us who will be on paddle boards and boats as we enjoy the lovey Coast.

Classes are for pups under 16 weeks of age and all pups re required to have had their first vaccination.

Personally, I will never recommend dog parks to people and here is a prime example why. I am aware this is not an everyday occurrence but dog fights afe often not reported.

When I speak of ‘socialising’ your dog, I refer to going to places like the beach, rock pools, getting the dog familiar with surroundings like cars, trucks, motorbikes, prams, people in high vis, hats, different weather elements. It is not referring to meeting every single dog they come across and this is something I discuss in puppy preschools primarily. Not all dogs will like eachother, just as people do not necessarily click with every person they meet.

Personally, I feel that dog parks are often used as a ‘babysitting’ area. It may look like dogs are playing chase, but which dog is constantly running away, which dog is terrified and hiding, or deciding between fight vs flight? Who is trying to escape to feel safe?

Watching your dogs body language is vital in any environment. If you need to, start by watching them at home, learn their cues, and, most importantly, be your dogs advocate. You are their family, you owe it to them to keep them safe.

Your dog is communicating with body language, just because you can’t hear it, doesn’t mean you can’t listen to them. Learn from them, they all continue to teach us so much.

You are your dogs advocate. Keep them safe.

Tui, Elly, Flounder, Luna and Kobe had a great night at graduation last night! Unfortunately Bonnie couldn’t make it.

Training can be fun, the more fun we make it for pups, the more we keep them engaged and wanting to train. Never push a dog to keep training when they are showing signs of being uninterested, keep it fun, keep it exciting!

The first group of pups to graduate for 2022!

We have Loki, Oakley, Titus, Ralph, Bowie and Milo.

We worked a lot with confidence building tonight and encouraging the pups to overcome fears such as water play, without forcing them to get in the water. We worked at the pace the pups set and let them be in control. It’s an amazing feeling to see them overcome fears and (in this case) become water pups! While you train your dogs, remember to let them set the pace, watch their body language and pay attention to what they are telling us 💜

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with these cuties over the last four weeks and get to know them. As much as I love graduation night, I don’t want them to leave!

The more I do this work the more I’m convinced that what’s at the core of the most rewarding and joyful dog-human relationships isn’t training experience, or exceptional handler skills, or having raised dogs your entire life. It’s basic compassion and common sense.

It’s the ability to see the world from the point of view of another living being, in this case, from the point of view of our dogs.

It’s taking a moment to decenter ourselves and see our dogs’ behavior not based on how it impacts us, makes us look or feel, but from their point of view.

Dog training info and social media can be downright scary—pseudoscience, egos, fear mongering, and constant assertion of power and control.

People are made to feel guilty for showing their dogs basic acts of kindness or indulging in small moments of pleasure like sharing food or cuddling on the couch.

Our time with our dogs is so brief. None of us are going to look back and say, “wow, I’m so glad I never let my dog on the couch!” or “I’m so happy I didn’t comfort them when they were scared.”

Yes of course teaching life skills matters, but please don’t forget why you’ve chosen to share a life with a dog in the first place.

Don’t forget the joy and give them the compassion you’d want to receive if you were navigating a foreign world that wasn’t designed for you.

[ID: A screenshot of a tweet and tweet replies by Jack Herrera that read We give dogs a hard time for overreacting to normal things, but I think I too would react poorly if someone grabbed me and started trying to give me a bath. A stranger suddenly walks into my house? My reaction likely wouldn’t be quiet and calm. A massive explosion and a shower of sparks suddenly fills the sky for reasons I do not understand? I’d also be concerned!]

We are all about inclusivity here! Not all pups like to wear a graduation hat at the end of puppy preschool so I enlisted the talent of the amazing Kirsty Couture and look how beautiful these bandanas are!

Now all the pups who graduate can have their special photo, with or without a graduation camp, with or without a bandana or without anything at all ❤️

Thank you Kirsty Couture, they are gorgeous! And thank you Phoebe, our first little model who is joining puppy preschool at the end of the month!

Bruno having a much deserved rest after his scent training session this morning and having some time with his stick.

As scent training is a nose work exercise the dogs get very thirsty and need regular breaks.

NOTE As we are in Auckland, we have been following the covid restrictions and regulations so this is all above board and allowed in the current level 3 alert level.

Meet Fofa. The latest addition to the team at Tails in Training.

Fofa is a 16 week old rescue pup but our training will have to deviate from the norm for puppies. Fofa has a heart condition which means she tires easily. Her puppy mindset wants to run and play but her body can’t always keep up. She still gets the puppy zoomies and had a wonderful time, but will snore for a while after!
