Are all meats made equal??

One of our clients had a question about feeding her dog ....see below her question and what we advised..

"Georgie is 3 yrs 9 months and weights 7.5kg. He suffers from environmental allergies and maybe food sensitivity. Started him on 1 and a half blocks of HokiChicken some time ago. He loves it. Also has vegetables carrot, kumara, silverbeet, green beans and enjoys a little egg or yoghurt.
He was good for ages on the HokiChicken with occasional Rabbit but now seems to be licking a lot again and flicking his tongue in and out which could be nausea. Vet has checked him out and his teeth have been cleaned. Would you recommend another 'flavour' maybe LambTripe or ChickenMince that could be easier on the stomach?"

Our advice...

Thanks for reaching out, sorry to hear Georgie is having issues – it is always stressful for everyone when this happens.

Well done moving him over to raw, however all meats are not equal. This means there are different qualities in minerals and vitamins in each meat so it is really good to feed a variety.

Feeding only chicken is not advisable, what I would do is add in some Possum, Fish or Beef supreme (this is a good light mixture with tripe and offal) and rotate say 2-3 flavours that he doesn’t react with. Also in the chicken you can do Fruit Veg Boost or the Chicken and rabbit.

To food test any new meat feed only that meat for two days, dogs will react to a meat that does not agree with them within 24hrs so you will know either way if he can tolerate it.

If you find that meat is ok, then trial another within a day or so. Do not feed anything else while you are food testing, especially not treats. This system makes it definitive to find out what you can and cannot feed.

Our big boy "Little Man" is a cat who loves the farm. We hardly see him, only at feed time and when it's too wet for even the fish!

Tucked up by the fire, Little Man and Pipsqueek are litter mates that are coming up to 13yrs old.

Raw fed from kittens they are healthy and never require vet attention. Both are awesome hunters bringing in rabbits 🐇, they hunt rats and mice.

Cats are natural carnivores, feed them right to keep them healthy for a long life!
