Hi all, just wanted to let you know we have made the tough decision to finish up the fish rescue.

The cost of running the service has become too prohibitive.

We have enjoyed meeting and assisting lots of fellow fish keepers and turtle enthusiasts. Thank you for your support over the past two years.

A massive thank you to For Pets Sake Timaru, Pet Central Timaru and The Fish room, Cameron Scott for all their support.

Thanks again, Dan and Judith.

Update**** Home found. 😊

Large Bala Shark Available.

Hi, we have been contacted by a local fish keeper (Orari) who has a large Bala shark for rehoming. Shark is approximately 30cm so will require a large tank.

Had a cloudy eye (likely due to impact trauma) which has healed.

If you are interested please message the page with any questions.

Urgent water conservation notice: TIMARU URBAN

Water users on the Timaru Urban network are being asked to conserve water until Monday to avoid a Boil Water Notice having to be put in place.

The current weather event has created muddy conditions on our main and backup water sources, so we are currently unable to take water from them.

At the moment we are only using existing storage in our reservoirs, which meets all standards, but this will only last a few days at normal usage levels.

If this runs low we would have to switch on the intakes and put a city-wide boil water notice in place.

To avoid this, everyone in Timaru needs to conserve as much water as possible until Monday 25 July. Everyone doing their bit is our best chance of avoiding a boil water notice having to be put in place.

Some ideas on how to conserve water can be found at https://www.timaru.govt.nz/services/environment/water/water-saving-tips

We haven’t posted in a while, but rest assured we have been busy preparing for winter (mainly working on ways to reduce power consumption).

Just wanted to again thank the businesses that have helped us and to
All the individuals that have donated equipment that they are no longer using. It is all a massive help.

Thank you in particular to The Fish Room, For Pets Sake and Pet Central Timaru.

Hi, just a reminder we are not a business.
We do this as a service at great personal expense and time.

Patience and manners go a long way. We answer messages and post pics as soon as we can. Happy fish keeping.

Getting rid of your aquarium? Be a responsible pet owner!

🌱🐟 Dumping flora and fauna into our waterways means our native species have to compete for food and space, can be introduced to new diseases and parasites, and even eaten by some invasive species.

♻️🏠 Help play a part in protecting biodiversity by disposing your aquarium contents appropriately. Compost waterweed in your garden or put in your green bin, and rehome pets to friends or family.

📷 Pictured is a non-native axolotl discovered in the village green pond in Waikari (Hurunui District Council) by our staff and Department of Conservation.

Merry Christmas from South Canterbury Fish Rescue.

Thank you to all have supported us this year. We are looking forward to a wee break over Christmas (although the tanks never rest).

Thank you to those who have used our service, both rehoming and to be rehomed. We have had fish coming in every week since we began and also turtles and frogs.. who knows what 2022 will bring.

Sorry about the pic, I couldn’t get the fish to wear a santa costume, so Copernicus stepped in.

Merry Christmas 🎄

Wanted - Old Fish keeping equipment or plumbing parts.

Do you or someone you know have old fish tanks/ponds or equipment you are no longer using or unsure if it still works.
We are looking for donations of old equipment.

With the increase in fish coming in and as our second hand equipment ages the tanks require frequent maintenance.

We are often able to repair pumps and pipe work using old equipment. If you have anything laying around you are no longer using and would like to donate this it would be gratefully received. Will gladly collect between Geraldine and Oamaru.

Examples of items:
Pumps, heaters, pipework, neta fittings, garden irrigation, ponds, aquariums, 15mm 20mm plumbing fittings, tanks, aquariums, pipes. (Basically anything wet pet/water related 😁).

A massive thanks to “For Pets Sake” “Pet Central” “Havenwyck Pets” and “The Fish Room” for their support.

Thanks for reading, please share if you know of anyone who may be able to help.

The Fish Room is a huge supporter of ours and it is very much appreciated.

Bucky the cairn terrier is completely uninterested in our newest guest, Speedy the 5 year old RES.

Frankie our 15 year old rescue has been showing him the ropes.

While working on the pond today I was spotted by our convalescing cat (Featuring the net curtain she took exception to yesterday).

Still a work in progress, but coming along nicely. Frankie the rescue turtle approves.

Our Biosecurity team found this Plecostomus, an ornamental catfish from the Amazon, living in a Pāpāmoa stormwater drain. By the size of it, it had been living in the drain for quite some time.

In the past exotic pets like this wouldn’t have been able to survive in the wild but with warming temperatures due to climate change they can survive and potentially thrive in the wild.

If you no longer want your exotic pet we ask that you do the right thing and rehome it rather than release it into the wild. Exotic species like this pose a major threat to our vulnerable ecosystems.
If you see any exotic species in the wild please report your sighting to us at 0800 884 880

It has been a busy time these last couple of weeks, fish and axolotls coming in, fish going out and the first of two ponds underway, this one for turtles.
We have also had old equipment and tanks donated to us which is very much appreciated.

While digging we unearthed a heap of slate that has been buried under the deck by the previous owners over 15 years ago, a useful wee score.
