Summer means BBQs, picnics and plenty of good food, but some of our favourites aren’t safe for pets. From sausages to ice cream, certain treats can cause more harm than you’d expect.

🐶🍫 Who ate all the chocolate?

Two mischievous dogs came into Vetlife Ashburton recently after getting into four whole boxes of chocolate. But no one was quite sure which one was guilty!

“Chocolate toxicity occurs because dogs cannot break down theobromine and caffeine found in cocoa. The darker the chocolate, the higher the risk, and signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, tremors or even seizures can appear within 6–12 hours. If you’re ever unsure what or how much chocolate your dog has eaten, contact your vet straight away — time is critical.”

🚗🐶 Dogs Die in Hot Cars 🐶🚗

We’re joining the SPCA to help spread this important message: If you love them, don’t leave them.

Even on a mild day, the inside of a car can reach over 50°C in just 15 minutes. Cracking a window or parking in the shade doesn’t make it safe. Last year, calls about dogs left in hot cars made up around 11% of all SPCA welfare complaints.

Heatstroke can cause organ failure, brain damage, or even death and it happens fast. Please keep your furry friends safe this summer by never leaving them in the car.

As summer weather warms up, it’s important to keep our pets safe in the heat. Dogs and cats can struggle to regulate their body temperature, making them vulnerable to overheating and heatstroke.

Simple steps like providing shade, fresh water, and avoiding hot surfaces can make all the difference. Check out our essential summer pet care tips: https://hubs.la/Q03XySHh0

Why Microchipping Matters 🐾

Back in April, Harper went missing while her owners were away on holiday and a house sitter was looking after her. After several months with no sign of her, Harper was finally found in September—spotted breaking into homes along Airport Road and brought into the clinic by a member of the public.

Thanks to her microchip and the alert her owners had placed on the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), Harper was scanned, identified, and reunited with her family within five minutes of arriving in clinic.

With the festive season approaching and a time when many people are on the move, it’s a timely reminder of how important it is to microchip your pets and ensure your contact details are up to date.

✅ Microchip your pet
✅ Register with NZCAR https://hubs.la/Q03XyQ3d0
✅ Keep your info current

It could be the difference between lost and found.

🌞 Summer Socialisation = Higher Kennel Cough Risk 🌞

With dogs mixing more during the holiday season; boarding, daycare, parks, groomers, our veterinary teams see more cases of Canine Cough (Kennel Cough).

✅ Vaccination matters: Protect your dog before summer adventures
✅ Keep coughing dog's home: Avoid contact with others
✅ Watch for: Persistent, hacking cough

📞 Contact your local Vetlife clinic to discuss the Canine Cough vaccine or if you have any concerns.

With spring gardening in full swing and many people tackling pests, it’s a timely reminder about the serious risks bait products can pose to dogs.

Baits containing metaldehyde can be highly toxic and dogs are often drawn to their smell and taste. Even if stored out of reach, dogs may scavenge spilled pellets or find bait in the garden.

Signs of poisoning can include muscle tremors, vomiting, and seizures. In severe cases, even with emergency treatment, recovery may not be possible.

⚠️ If you suspect your dog has ingested bait, please contact your vet immediately.
