Christchurch Rabbit Rescue is a non profit rabbit rescue group (registered charity CC59971). We take in unwanted, neglected or stray rabbits.

We spay or neuter rabbits in our care, as well as vaccinate with Filavac and microchip. We can’t succeed alone, and need the support of community members like you to really make a significant impact. What a note to end 2024 on 🥹

We received a donation this weekend.

This donation was a game changing amount 😭

For some rescues, this donation would be common and not worth shedding tears over.

For us, it has covered SIX MONTHS of expenses 😱

To say I’m floored is an understatement.

I no longer need to worry about how to afford Dumbo’s neuter in January.
I no longer need to worry about how to afford the next shipment of Burgess.
I no longer need to worry about how to have the rescue survive 2025.

To whoever you are, and everyone else who has donated to us, THANK YOU. I simply don’t have words that can convey how thankful and grateful I am to you all, that you’re in both my and the rabbits corner 🫶
Without you, we are dead in the water.

Day in and day out, I get hit with the “it’s just a rabbit” mentality. “We only help cat or dog rescues” “Why would you spend so much money on a rabbit? A bullet costs less” “Rabbits are best in a stew”

Then people like this come through and remind me that to many of us, it’s not just a rabbit.
They are family.

This week, we said goodbye to Fred

Fred was the rabbit that sparked the showdown with Christchurch City Council for the repulsive conditions the animals were being kept in. He didn’t know it when he starred on TV but he helped prevent future suffering for buns at that “park”.

This goodbye is bittersweet.
It’s never easy, but I’m glad he got to leave this life gently with a belly full of nooner rather than the slow death from heatstroke that CCC had condemned him to.

His little rabbit life may not have mattered to most, but he mattered to us.

A big ✨THANK YOU✨ to all who supported us this year through our Christmas Box fundraiser!

By doing so, you enable us to continue helping buns in need and give us a brief reprieve from worrying about how we will pay for it 🖤

During this time, we have still be quietly doing what we can for the vulnerable rabbits in Christchurch, with this dude being sold at 4 weeks old online with their siblings, and father/brother (yes their brother IS their father 😖). Never mind the horrific conditions they were being kept in, though I’m still scrubbing the smell out of my nose. While we absolutely have some challenges to overcome first, we now don’t need to worry about paying for their medications or vet visits.

We have two boxes left for this year, then we will be done until 2025.

Thank you for helping us make a difference to those so horribly let down by humans 🫶

On the eve of December….a reminder

Animals are not Christmas presents!

We have been receiving an alarming number of enquiries for Santa to bring their child rabbits this year.

Gifting animals of any species is a thoughtless, irresponsible, and cruel act that can lead to a lifetime of suffering for the animal.

Rabbits are not toys, they are living beings with complex needs and emotions. They require a lifelong commitment to care, attention, and love – not a fleeting holiday novelty.

The consequences of gifting animals are devastating:
Abandonment and surrender to shelters
Neglect and abuse
A lifetime of suffering and stress

Instead of gifting animals, consider these alternatives:
Donate to an animal welfare organisation
Give animal-themed gifts
Support local animal shelters and rescue groups

Most rabbits given as gifts do not live long enough to see their first birthday 😡 my 5 personal pet buns are 6 years old and 5 years old, what does that say about the “care” these Christmas presents receive?

If you're considering gifting an animal, you need to rethink your priorities. Animals are not disposable gifts, they are living beings that deserve respect, care, and compassion.

Do better folks.
It’s nearly 2025. We should have long moved on from this crap.

Sadly, things got too much for Stan The Man today 💔

He has been battling hard against the demons for two weeks but the battle got too much for his wee body. We threw everything at our disposal at the speed bumps Stan encountered in his short life but we came up short for this one.

I hope there is a paddock full of plantain and a mouth full of healthy teeth up there for you Stan 🕊️ fly high wee man

We are very excited to be able to offer one bun fam Christmas boarding this year! 🎅

Due to how the cards have fallen this year, our overflow room is empty so can accommodate either a single bun or a bonded bun pair! 🐰🐰

They will have their own bedroom including:
- ducted air conditioning / heat pump with zone control
- Unlimited CRR meadow hay (known as “Bunny Crack” amongst friends)
- Unlimited Timothy hay
- Filtered water so no stinky chlorine
- Fresh forage
- Selectives or Burgess pellets (other brands or specific varieties of these will need to be owner provided)
- Selective Loops, Burgess Herby Hearts or Nibblot treats
- Carrot Cottage enrichment
- At The Vets as our favoured vet clinic, so in an emergency you know your pet is in good hands

As many know, we have had a lot of high needs and complex health conditions in our time so our knowledge base is top grade.

Any rabbits will need to have current Filavac vaccinations, and be desexed at least 5 weeks prior. Pairs need to already be bonded.

Costs are $20 per day, with a minimum stay of 5 days. This is a service being provided, so a donation receipt cannot be issued.
