The time has come for me to retire from shoeing. I wish to thank everyone who has supported me and also those who have helped with my education along the way. Jeremy Douglas racing and Macandrew Farm will be more than enough to keep me busy.

With a lot of uncertainty at present in the breeding sector, it was timely and refreshing to see some youthful exuberance show up on my social media feed over

Foals are born with no immunity at all.

However, as soon as they are born they are exposed to bacteria and other nasties, and they need to be set up to fight these soon after birth.

They get the necessary immediate antibodies come from their mother’s colostrum.

Acquiring antibodies from the mare via colostrum within the first 12-24 hours of life is critical for good foal immunity and early health. The transfer of antibodies from colostrum ONLY occurs in this 12-24 hour window when the foal's intestine allows the uptake of antibodies. After this time, antibodies can no longer be absorbed.

Foaling mares is not for the faint hearted

Foalings are fast events that require preparation and need to have an attendant always on hand.

If something goes wrong, action is required quickly.

Here’s an interesting case that’s been staying with us the last few days. Long term laminitic mare. A large amount of fungal infection under the hoof wall and pedal bone rotation. Hoof rebuild courtesy of Mustads new hoof glue which I am finding way more tolerant of our Southland environment

Horse in need of a home!

Unfortunately Winston here has an ongoing issue that is going to prevent him from becoming a racehorse.

He is the coolest little dude who loves being around other horses and people. As quiet as they come.

He is not suitable to be raced or ridden. He is looking for someone to take him on as a pet or paddock mate.

If you are interested or know of anyone interested, please reach out. 0272290229

Up to 70% of equine properties in New Zealand now have some degree of drench resistance. This has led to changes in recommendations for equine parasite management.

Regular drenching based on calendar intervals, or blanket rotational drenching, is no longer recommended.

Instead we recommend FEC testing all horses to see which ones are contributing the most to pasture contamination, and then only drench those horses.

VetSouth Equine Spring FEC test only $20 incl. GST at any clinic during September - results and recommendation back within 48 hours

When considering “the importance of regular shoeing,” attention is often placed on the issue of “shoeing.” However, regardless of whether a shoe is involved, the regularity of the intervention can be the deciding factor in the long-term success of the farriery effort.
