"New Home Syndrome"🤓

I am coining this term to bring recognition, respect, and understanding to what happens to horses when they move homes. This situation involves removing them from an environment and set of routines they have become familiar with, and placing them somewhere completely different with new people and different ways of doing things.

Why call it a syndrome?

Well, really it is! A syndrome is a term used to describe a set of symptoms that consistently occur together and can be tied to certain factors such as infections, genetic predispositions, conditions, or environmental influences. It is also used when the exact cause of the symptoms is not fully understood or when it is not connected with a well-defined disease. In this case, "New Home Syndrome" is connected to a horse being placed in a new home where its entire world changes, leading to psychological and physiological impacts. While it might be transient, the ramifications can be significant for both the horse and anyone handling or riding it.

Let me explain...

Think about how good it feels to get home after a busy day. How comfortable your favourite clothes are, how well you sleep in your own bed compared to a strange bed, and how you can really relax at home. This is because home is safe and familiar. At home, the part of you that keeps an eye out for potential danger turns down to a low setting. It does this because home is your safe place (and if it is not, this blog will also explain why a lack of a safe place is detrimental).

Therefore, the first symptom of horses experiencing "New Home Syndrome" is being unsettled, prone to anxiety, or difficult behaviour. If you have owned them before you moved them, you struggle to recognise your horse, feeling as if your horse has been replaced by a frustrating version. If the horse is new to you, you might wonder if you were conned, if the horse was drugged when you rode it, or if you were lied to about the horse's true nature.

A horse with "New Home Syndrome" will be a stressed version of itself, on high alert, with a drastically reduced ability to cope. Horses don't handle change like humans do. If you appreciate the comfort of your own home and how you can relax there, you should be able to understand what the horse is experiencing.

Respecting that horses interpret and process their environments differently from us helps in understanding why your horse is being frustrating and recognising that there is a good chance you were not lied to or that the horse was not drugged.

Horses have survived through evolution by being highly aware of their environments. Change is a significant challenge for them because they notice the slightest differences, not just visually but also through sound, smell, feel, and other senses. Humans generalise and categorise, making it easy for us to navigate familiar environments like shopping centres. Horses do not generalise in the same way; everything new is different to them, and they need proof of safety before they can habituate and feel secure. When their entire world changes, it is deeply stressful.

They struggle to sleep until they feel safe, leading to sleep deprivation and increased difficulty.

But there is more...

Not only do you find comfort in your home environment and your nervous system downregulates, but you also find comfort in routines. Routines are habits, and habits are easy. When a routine changes or something has to be navigated differently, things get difficult. For example, my local supermarket is undergoing renovations. After four years of shopping there, it is extremely frustrating to have to work out where everything is now. Every day it gets moved due to the store being refitted section by section. This annoyance is shared by other shoppers and even the staff.

So, consider the horse. Not only are they confronted with the challenge of figuring out whether they are safe in all aspects of their new home while being sleep deprived, but every single routine and encounter is different. Then, their owner or new owner starts getting critical and concerned because the horse suddenly seems untrained or difficult. The horse they thought they owned or bought is not meeting their expectations, leading to conflict, resistance, explosiveness, hypersensitivity, and frustration.

The horse acts as if it knows little because it is stressed and because the routines and habits it has learned have disappeared. If you are a new human for the horse, you feel, move, and communicate differently from what it is used to. The way you hold the reins, your body movements in the saddle, the position of your leg – every single routine of communication between horse and person is now different. I explain to people that when you get a new horse, you have to imprint yourself and your way of communicating onto the horse. You have to introduce yourself and take the time to spell out your cues so that they get to know you.

Therefore, when you move a horse to a new home or get a new horse, your horse will go through a phase called "New Home Syndrome," and it will be significant for them. Appreciating this helps them get through it because they are incredible and can succeed. The more you understand and help the horse learn it is safe in its new environment and navigate the new routines and habits you introduce, the faster "New Home Syndrome" will pass.
"New Home Syndrome" will be prevalent in a horse’s life until they have learned to trust the safety of the environment (and all that entails) and the humans they meet and interact with. With strategic and understanding approaches, this may take weeks, and their nervous systems will start downgrading their high alert status. However, for some horses, it can take a couple of years to fully feel at ease in their new home.

So, next time you move your horse or acquire a new horse and it starts behaving erratically or being difficult, it is not being "stupid", you might not have been lied to or the horse "drugged" - your horse is just experiencing an episode of understandable "New Home Syndrome." And you can help this.❤

I would be grateful if you could please share, this reality for horses needs to be better appreciated ❤

Could this dude get any cooler? Beach ride this morning and he was unflappable! Happy to lead when his buddy wasn’t sure about going through some boggy muck. Went past some golfers who he was very interested in - maybe he was a golfer in his past life? 🤔
He couldn’t have gone better for his second outing, he’s just fabulous.
Did some beautiful trotting where he was happy to go slow and keep pace with his buddy 👌🏼

Couldn’t have said it better 👌🏼

Couldn’t have said it better 👌🏼

Since I’m talking about things that annoy me - I have a request for all horse people…

Do not say you will take a horse - if you will then just vanish off the face of the earth… please just message to say you have changed your mind at least, I would prefer that!

It’s happened to me five times in the last 2 weeks - I answer all the questions, talk on the phone, do viewings - then they say they want them! Awesome!!! I put the other people off, I send my bank details for a deposit and my address for a transporter, few more messages backwards and forwards saying they are booking the truck then radio silence!

But then I find this the tricky bit, like how long do I wait because life can happen? I don’t want to sell from under them? But then normally I have other people in the wing waiting to see if they can come view - it’s tricky 🤣

Anyway the point is please stop doing it, or if you change your mind, that’s fine - just say that!

Even after you have viewed a horse, let’s normalise sending a message after a viewing saying “no thank you the horse wasn’t for me”

Also if you don’t have the funds either, please don’t spend hours talking to me, come for viewings to then just say you don’t have the money! 🤣

We have lives too, come only if you are genuine 🙏

I know in hind sight, I wouldn’t want my horses going there anyway but still, it’s annoying 🤣

That’s enough from me - positive posts only from now on!

Pictured is my golden boy at his first big boy outing where he behaved absolutely beautifully! 💛💛

Well Challenger definitely does NOT live up to his name! Such a sweet and willing lad. Very forward.
He had his first ride out of the paddock and we went for a road ride. He handled himself incredibly well with only one spook at a neighbour behind his hedge 👌🏼
I asked him to go a bit faster than a walk and he offered a beautiful, smooth trot. Had a pace when he was focused on something in the distance but was only a few strides then fell into the trot again.
Loads and travels beautifully.
I can see this boy excelling in any discipline his new owners wanted whether it be happy hacking, in the show ring, doing endurance or even some western stuff.

Bug had a ride with busy traffic today. He didn’t flinch at cars, utes with trailers, big trucks, cows running to the fence and filling us along. Only a big scary dog in the back of a van that started barking made him think twice but was such a good boy about it.
We tried the hackamore today and I think he much preferred it to being bitted. Still needs to get used to the different kind of steering but went super well and he still has wonderful brakes with it 👌🏼
We even jumped a ditch! Albeit sideways, but we jumped! 🤣

Yet another great movement to get behind, this one benefits pretty much every rider out there!

‼️
Due to a number of horses waiting and rider still being slightly injured (and due to his young age) I’m offering up Tommy free to a good home where he will get a kind start to a ridden career.
Tommy is 3 rising 4, approx 16.1 standardbred gelding. He has NOT been ridden. He’s great to handle; groom, tie, feet but can be a little funny about being caught sometimes - food is always a winner 😅
He loads and travels great on a straight load float - I picked him up from Hamilton myself and it was a very pleasant trip home.
Currently paddocked with both mares and geldings, can be a bit bossy and annoying to lower ranking horses.
Barefoot with nice solid hooves.
Only downside I’ve found so far - if he is behind tape it NEEDS to be hot otherwise he just walks right through it 🤦🏼‍♀️

‼️Breaking News‼️
I have teamed up with Halo Horse Products for a limited time to help get their products out there in the world. Halo Horse Products are handmade right here in Northland, New Zealand.
Each of my horses will come with a wee care package of carefully homemade horse health products.
In the care package will be:

- Wonder Hoof Wax 🐴
This wax is the best hoof health buddy in my opinion. Containing potent healing ingredients it annihilates thrush and seedy toe and helps repair white line disease without attacking the good bacteria of the hoof, all while acting as a moisturising barrier against the mud and ick.
Made with a raw beeswax base it’s super pliable and easy to apply.

- Manuka Wash Bar 🛁
I love this soap bar for those horrible, itchy skin issues like rainscald and mudfever. A must have for this wet and warm climate NZ has. Use like any other soap bar.

- Wonder Healing Balm ❤️‍🩹
This has to be the best healing ointment I’ve come across - so good I use it on myself!
Also made with potent healing ingredients, this balm clears up minor cuts and grazes within days and aids in moist healing of larger injuries. I highly recommend having this in your vet kit!

Last week River got swapped out for Druid - she decided that she forgot how to unload and once off apparently she was now a feral bush pony 🤦🏼‍♀️
So I took Druid out to drop off and pick the big baby up. Loaded fantastic - still didn’t know how to unload. Bizarre.
She will be turned out until I’m healed and then into Good Manners Bootcamp.
Perfect home for Druid, where he will be spoilt like he deserves ♥️

Well…after four hours at White Cross I’ve been sent home in a cast for two - possibly three - fractures in my hand and wrist 🤦🏼‍♀️ so all the ponies get a holiday for a while.

If anyone is interested in a cheap winter project - get in touch. Most horses will be cheap cheap cheap while I’m injured. My loss is your gain!

Big Bug had another outing today - we went to Northgate Lodge and rode around her orchard looking at some scary xc jumps on the way (the pigs were definitely going to eat him) 😆
Has a beautiful trot and willingly canters without much ask 😍
He can have a break from riding while we working on bridling and float loading manners 👍🏼

15/06/2024

I just love this breed so much.

Druid on his first outing. Went to friends farm just down the road and he was such a good boy. Couldn’t fault him apart from being slightly on the lazy side 🤣
Saw cows for the first time, they were a bit scary but we even helped get them out of the paddock! Went through yucky muddy puddles, walked over tape gates on the ground, went for a wee blat up a hill and stood quietly watching while the tb with us had a minor meltdown 😅
Loads and travels beautifully- barely even noticed he’s there!

Today we said goodbye to River - she’s gone to a lovely young lady who previously got a tb off me (you might remember cute little Jet).
Couldn’t be happier with her new home - just perfect! 🥰

So now I’ll introduce Boris - Bugs younger half brother - he’s a super sweet lad who always comes to the fence to say hello.
Only recently retired from racing so he can have a couple more weeks of let down time before we learn the ridden career. Big handsome hunk he is! 😍

10/06/2024

Bug had his first solo road ride!
Such a good boy, was a bit looky and took some encouragement in some places but all in all he was happily moving out - only called out once and didn’t stop to spook at anything 👌🏼
Got some nice trotting and even a wee canter when we got into the paddock.

Excuse the filth - was a quick decision for a wee ride between the rain ☔️

07/06/2024

Challengers first ride.
Confused as anything with the mounting but was a good boy and tried really hard.
Standing still was a-okay! He thought moving was a bit weird though and didn’t know where to go 🤣
After 10 or so mins we could go forward, stop, back up a few steps, circle left and right ♥️

Sorry I’ve removed the sound - all you could hear was my nose sniffling away with this head cold 🤧

Alfie - gelding, 15.2ish, 7yo.
Curious, but cautious - takes time to warm up. Sane and sensible, gentleman to handle. Super easy (worming, trimming and grooming, floating) I had great hopes of this dude coming eventing with me however only suited to low-level dressage or hacking due to tendon injury, but what a hacking machine he is. He would also look stunning in the dressage ring and would love someone to give him a chance at that. Natural carriage with a beautiful trot despite being a pacer. Canter is getting established and it’s so nice to ride. Have had my vet scan his leg and I’m happy to provide report to serious buyers. Will be sad to see him go. Threw him in the deep end for his first big outing with a 4.5hr trek and he handles everything like the little champion he is. We had everything you could see on the trail thrown at us and he was solid the 95% of way through. Not in a rush to find this guy a home as he deserves the best of the best.
**I would be comfortable putting confident beginners on him**

SOLD SOLD SOLD

📍Waipu, Northland
Ice - gelding, 16.2ish 9yo, 💰2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣
Tentatively offering up a very special boy, purely for the fact that his dreams of strolling along taking in the sights don’t line up with mine of tearing across the cross country field and he deserves to be out hacking with his person.
He has only been under saddle since 25th October but in that time we have done quite a bit. His happy place is out on the trail.
Happy in front or behind, brave and confident - barely spooks at anything and is confident enough to lead other horses past ‘scary things’
Fantastic to drench, rug and unrug in the paddock, stands lovely for farrier, great to tack up and do pretty much everything with. Self loads on the float. Straight trotter so no pacing ever. We have the canter - sometimes takes a bit more encouragement but the more we do the quicker he is to move into the canter and what a beautiful canter it is!

We have done beach (will go in up to his belly if he has mate in there with him), road and farm riding plus I have introduced him to working equitation obstacles and didn’t flinch at a single one (just when someone popped up from behind a car - don’t blame him I would too!) this guy will be an asset to any happy hacker or would make an awesome CTR mount. We tried jumping - absolutely not his thing. Great with dogs running around him.
Simple snaffle mouth and unshod - I use hoof boots when riding on gravel and hard surfaces.
Only downside I’ve come across is that he wind sucks.
This is a very hard decision and I’ll be very picky in the home he goes to.

**I would be comfortable putting confident beginner riders on him**
