What a weekend for Seeker! 🧡💛🩵 He placed first in Novice, gained his Agility Dog Title (AD) and graduated to Intermediate.
He also had a 2nd Placing in Novice on a clear round ( his Novice runs were just lovely!) and a 3rd Place in Starters on 5 faults.
He’s going from strength to strength .. it’s a journey that takes a village and I’m so very grateful for you all 🙏🙌❤️
I don’t have any video of his Novice runs but here is his run in Starters. It was going so well 😂

If you’ve not seen this already then please read. These are the words of wisdom you need to hear ❤️
It’s not about how much you succeed with your dog, it’s about what happens when you don’t...
On days when things don’t go your way, confidence, ego and even your commitment may take a hit.
How you handle those times can make all the difference in being the best partner to your dog.
While for some success comes early and easily, for most, it takes time, hard work, discipline and a lot of mistakes.
For others, it can be even more difficult, coming only after refusing to allow circumstances, setbacks and disappointment be the final story.
Success is a process that is not just about winning, it’s also about progress.
It’s important to be motivated by the accomplishments within your goal and equally important not to fear disappointment, as it provides the road map for what you need to change and improve.
Success has many faces, that show up often, but it’s up to you to recognize and derive the relative sense of fulfillment. It can include:
Understanding and executing the next step in training
Solving a problem (or not creating one by being impatient)
Taking ownership of what you’ve trained (or haven’t)
Being accountable and not blaming your dog
Recognizing when you shouldn’t or should ask more of your dog and yourself
Letting go of ego and expectations
Having a growth mindset
Developing mental fortitude
to name a few.…
In times when success is hard to find, disappointments offer opportunity to spot weaknesses and let go of bad habits.
They are important to acknowledge, and not dispute or hide, as self-awareness is critical for development and becoming better.
You’re the only one that can define what success means for you—
To attain your definition, you’ll likely need to take risks, be uncomfortable, seek help, make sacrifices, have disappointments, learn new skills and be willing to change.
I have many weaknesses that I work on everyday and I’ve found the more I try to improve personally, the better partner and trainer I am for my dog.

Becoming a better trainer and handler is often separated by the details.
Many trainers work towards the same goals using different methods. When the situation is difficult or a dog is under adversity, the quality of your work and the attitude of your dog, reveals the effectiveness of your process.
How you train and your success as a teacher is not only the method you employ but how you go about it, including your mindset, effort, communication skills and patience.
A dog’s ‘try’ and heart is ultimately a reflection of his desire and enjoyment.
You can often tell from a dogs attitude if his training was positive by how he reacts, especially in challenging situations; if he's happy to fulfill his commands or if he responds with sullenness or avoidance.
Dogs can be trained with many different styles and techniques.
There is a big difference though between a dog that has been trained only through drilling and a dog that has been trained intuitively.
When the work is enjoyable and the task is fully understood, it becomes your dogs idea to want to please.
When he is mentally invested and you have a connection, you get his heart and a partnership is formed❤️

Brilliant advice 💚
Trainers sometimes get frustrated when they don’t see the progress in their dog they expect or desire.
They often respond by pressing harder, hyper focusing on the specific area in which their dog is not advancing….the exact opposite of what many dogs need.
They have a vision of how they want their dog to develop; a preconceived timeline of what a dog should be doing and when. If these expectations aren’t met they mistakenly convince themselves if they could improve “X”
(ie a wider outrun, squarer flank, better pace, stronger shedder etc)
all the pieces would come together.
But the key to helping dogs realize their full potential isn’t found by achieving the perceived next step,
improving a single aspect, employing a more sophisticated technique or trying a new gimmick.
Rather it’s found in the standard, understanding and totality of all the bits of training that comprise “the body of work”.
More specifically, it’s dependent upon the quality of the fundamentals, coupled with the right mindset.
Foundational skills are paramount and there is no embarrassment in going back to improve them; once mastered, they provide the springboard for future breakthroughs.
Focusing on these and staying in one place a bit longer gives your dog a mental break. Moreover, you reap the benefits found in the power of habits.
The repetition and routine inherent to core fundamentals develop confidence and cultivate mental fortitude.
It is a better and much less detrimental approach than pushing a young dog too hard to take the next step if he’s not ready.
While some dogs learn very quickly others need time to plateau, get a bit more experience, confidence and maturity before they’re ready for the next step.
Dogs that are slower to develop are very different from precocious dogs when they are young, however, if nurtured correctly, the two dogs can appear indistinguishable as trained dogs.
Instant results or training epiphanies are not common and the majority of the time, sudden improvement is actually a reflection of the cumulative body of work. The little nudge from a different approach that achieves quick and marked progress, probably wouldn’t have had a fraction of the effect without the supporting body of work.
One of the best gifts you can give your dog is letting go of the expectations of what you want him to become, and accept him for who he is—
As you help him through what he finds difficult, keep in mind
every dog learns at a different speed, requiring it to take the time it takes, for your dog to understand and enjoy a new concept.
Being patient in your training empowers learning, fosters partnership and strengthens your bond.
Last run of a super fun weekend running Brave at the Selwyn Jumpers Champs in Christchurch. This really is testament to how far he’s come with his jumping with the help of a fantastic physio and hydrotherapist. No bars here, and a picture perfect not planned turn away from me 🙈🤣 100% on me as I got a bit stuck by the long jump and I didn’t want to rush him .. always learning! Such a brilliant boy ❤️

Yesterday the stars 🤩⭐️🌟aligned and Brave and I pulled off this stunning winning run! It was a fabulous course for Brave from Libby Ellery and we almost did it a second time! I’m so proud of him! These don’t come easy or often for us so it’s a moment to cherish 🥰
He also graded up today and we look forward to the next chapter 🩵💙

Trust 💛 also got to have a play! She’s soo much fun! We’re taking our time and working on lots of foundation skills. So much fun in this session with Dyson and perfectly timed things that we worked on that were on my list .. almost as if you read my mind!

So much fun to be working these two over the weekend .. both very different dogs with very different challenges .. and despite the minimal agility training of late ( and my inability to run on the sand 🙈🤣) they were just great! Thanks so much Dyson for a super fun weekend of learning!
A great way to spend a lovely crisp morning ❄️ Trust and I spent a good couple of hours walking some tracks around Huka Falls this morning. So good for her to be out and about with people and dogs, and she did so good to walk down the road on the way home. Traffic has been a challenge for her but she’s come such a long way. Super proud of her 💞

Seeker and I did a little visit to a local show today … he hasn’t been out since April and I don’t think anyone noticed him ! He’s going from strength to strength. As a dog who struggles with knowing how to cope and manage his big feelings he did remarkably well today 💛🌟🧡

My little Miss Sunshine 🌻🌼💛 Trust is 8 months old today!
My little Miss Sunshine! 🌼💛🌻 8 months today and last night finished her 6 week puppy primary school class. Best thing I did was host that class at home. She’s come so far since our first night. We managed a group sit stay and a group recall - all the pups were amazing!
Last night Jenny & Shiney rocked their lesson 🤩 This brings me so much joy! Jenny is in her early 70s and Shiney is a 2 year old BC. It’s reminded me about the simple joy both owner and dog get from playing games and just spending time together. Jenny and Shiney have just mastered the front cross! Who remembers trying to learn the mechanics of a front cross or a post turn when you first started agility. It was so freaking hard LOL Well done Jenny & Shiney 🌸

The only video I have of Brave from the Nationals over the weekend.. so grateful for this 🥰 The background commentary is kinda cool .. it’s Brave to a tee!! “He’s gunning it” will stay with me for a long while ❤️ This was so close! Posted the fastest time in the class - a hard bar for him to keep up. He did some super cool work over the weekend. Start lines need some work🙈 He’s my best teacher of all things dog - there is no room for error 💙 Goals for NZDAC 2024!
