Training Exercise - Proprioception - What is proprioception? According to the Oxford dictionary - Proprioception is the perception or awareness of the position and movement of the body.
“exercises to improve balance and proprioception”
Proprioception is something that can be introduced for all dogs as it benefits puppies and seniors, injured and healthy and everyone else too. It helps them know where their feet and body is in space (reducing chances of accidental injury) as well as keeping them physically fit, mentally enriched, it also builds confidence. Always work at your dogs level. This level involves their age, stamina, skill, fitness and health. If your dog is elderly or suffers from injuries or health conditions - please seek the advice of a veterinary physiotherapist before taking on this task.
Start simple. It can be as easy as walking on different surfaces - such as grass, astro-turf, pillows, leaves, etc.
As your dog or puppy gains confidence, use wobbly surfaces and have them stand with two feet on, two fee off. Build this up to 4 feet on. Ask for position changes - only if they are capable of doing so.
You can use tarps and tunnels for different textures, shallow water pits, ball pits etc.
Make small hurdles using brooms and mops at about the height of a single brick for most dogs - (ankle/wrist height) of the dog - then have them walk SLOWLY through. Concentrating on not knocking them down.
When using rewards to guide them through or on to an object - keep the reward low. If the animal is on leash, make sure it is loose, and they have the choice to get on/off, walk through or avoid the object. Remember choice is powerful and reinforcing.
Keep sessions short, and finish while you are all still having fun.

17 months old today .. my Fate 2.0 💓
Her first grown up grid this morning. She’s much more confident and so much stronger. Her compression grid is too tight and apparently she can bounce jump!
Seeker Wins Up to Intermediate
What a weekend for Seeker! 🧡💛🩵 He placed first in Novice, gained his Agility Dog Title (AD) and graduated to Intermediate.
He also had a 2nd Placing in Novice on a clear round ( his Novice runs were just lovely!) and a 3rd Place in Starters on 5 faults.
He’s going from strength to strength .. it’s a journey that takes a village and I’m so very grateful for you all 🙏🙌❤️
I don’t have any video of his Novice runs but here is his run in Starters. It was going so well 😂
So proud of how hard he’s working and trying. Super boy❤️

JC6 Selwyn Jumpers Champs Christchurch
Last run of a super fun weekend running Brave at the Selwyn Jumpers Champs in Christchurch. This really is testament to how far he’s come with his jumping with the help of a fantastic physio and hydrotherapist. No bars here, and a picture perfect not planned turn away from me 🙈🤣 100% on me as I got a bit stuck by the long jump and I didn’t want to rush him .. always learning! Such a brilliant boy ❤️
Brave’s Winning JC Run
Selwyn July 2024
Yesterday the stars 🤩⭐️🌟aligned and Brave and I pulled off this stunning winning run! It was a fabulous course for Brave from Libby Ellery and we almost did it a second time! I’m so proud of him! These don’t come easy or often for us so it’s a moment to cherish 🥰
He also graded up today and we look forward to the next chapter 🩵💙
7.8 meters per second that run - insane! Full credit to Brave for keeping those bars up ❤️❤️❤️
