Do you know what is involved with a typical small dog groom?

Time to make a booking
Checking in your dog and going over the groom
Putting your dog at ease before and during the groom
Nails trimmed
Pads clipped out
Two washes
Conditioner (optional)
Eye boogers cleaned out with tear-free shampoo
Ears checked (and cleaned if needed)
Blow dry
Brushed out
Fluffed up
Coat clipped
Scissored and thinning scissored to perfection
Face styled and adorable
Cuddles before and after (free of charge)
Rest and a drink of water while waiting to be picked up
Check out pup, report anything unusual and take payment

That is a LOT of steps for personal service for one of the most vulnerable members of your family.
Groomers typically choose this career as a passion and the price for that care is a drop in the bucket for what they deliver.

Value your groomer. Don't seek out the cheapest - seek out the professional who can help you with ways to save money between grooms such as a quick brushing lesson, advice on the right brushes for your pet, and discovering changes in your dog that may have developed between grooms.

Groomers have MANY stories of things they have found that turned out to be caught early and saved lives.

In April, the minimum wage increases again, and many groomers are earning only a little more than minimum... so please, respect them if your pet needs a small increase to keep up with wages and rising costs of quality products and ongoing training.

“Veterinary medicine has not done itself a favour by being as compassionate in a business sense. We haven’t done a great job in terms of training clients to respect our services. My brother in law is a plumber – if your toilet is broken on a Sunday, you will pay a $300 after-hours fee for that man to come fix your toilet. You’re not going to throw a fit and say you don’t care about my family’s hygiene, you don’t care about hygiene, and it should be free because you love toilets! This is not what we say to plumbers. We say thanks mate, god, you’re a lifesaver.

But if your dog is run over and you need to fix it, there’s heartbreak over a bill. We often empathise, and not that we shouldn’t, but in the business aspect we have not done a good job valuing ourselves and valuing our services. We have not set an industry standard to say look, this is a professional service, and it will cost you money. You don’t go to the fish and chip shop and order it and say, I’ll bring my money tomorrow. Why are we expected to do these things?

Unfortunately as the kind caring compassionate people, we will do it cos we think we’re doing others a favour, but it’s a slippery slope. I don’t think we should all be heartless robots, but I think some of the big picture grief that the industry suffers over, comes from the finances. It’s a hard job. It’s a job that takes a lot of skill, and a lot out of you. You can’t just cruise.”

Have your dog’s nails grown long because cutting them is an unpleasant experience, both for you and your dog?

Here are 7 reasons get those nails trimmed. If you aren’t comfortable cutting the nails, ask a veterinary professional or groomer to do it for you. While you’re at it, make sure you ask about training techniques you can use to make nail cutting a more pleasant experience for all involved.

I feel so sad for our Victorian friends in lockdown knowing many cannot get the help they need.

Imagine being elderly had with severe arthritis, and always regularly take their dogs to the groomer to prevent matts etc and now have no options, and no help.

For some... "just brush your own dog" is not an option...

As many of you will know, I have supported the government in making difficult but important evidence-based decisions, formulated on expert medical advice.

If a few more weeks in stage 4 is necessary to stop the spread of coronavirus - then that's what needs to be done.

Just because I support the government’s plan in principle, doesn’t mean there aren’t areas that need tweaking, or where I disagree in detail.

When these restrictions first came into place, I wrote to the government with concern that dog grooming was deemed non-essential.

Now that the government has extended restrictions, I have contacted them again today to say dog grooming must be reclassified for welfare. This new length of time will be far too long for many animals.

For many breeds of dogs, and even cats, grooming is vital for animal welfare reasons.

Dogs that go without regular grooming can end up with painful matting, skin irritation and overgrown nails, making it difficult to walk.

Just like you can leave your home to go to the vet – you should be able to leave your home to go to the groomer – no matter where in Victoria you live.

With more Victorians taking on a companion animal than ever before, it is vital that the government ensures they can safely get the care they deserve.

Starting your puppies grooming early sets them up for a lifetime of pleasant experiences

Starting your puppies grooming early sets them up for a lifetime of pleasant experiences

There is a lot that can be done at home to prepare puppies for a lifetime of grooming, both at home and at the groomers. Especially if you own a 'Hairy McLairy', starting early is really important.

Your dog should see grooming as a positive and even enjoyable experience and starting them young will expose them to all the sights, sounds and smells of grooming.

Fortunately a lot of customers realise how important it is to start grooming puppies early in life. Not just to prevent matting, but more so to teach them nice manners on the grooming table, before bad manners get established. This will not only help the groomer, but very much improve the dog's grooming experience throughout their life.

What can you as the pup's owner do at home? Regularly touch and hold feet, nails, ears, chin hair, muzzle, between the eyes, tail. In the beginning you don't have to hold for long, a few seconds is enough. Once pup is relaxed and happy, you can make it a bit longer.

Also rub a moist finger over teeth and gum, so you will be able to brush your dog's teeth later in life.

Regularly brush your dog followed by combing.

Establish a regular grooming space, putting them higher up, on a small table with a non-slip surface.
Ask the groomer to tell you what to buy and how to use these tools properly.

Discuss comfortable holding techniques for the dog with your groomer.

Use treats to reward when you get the behaviour you want and withheld treats when pup is fidgety.

One thing your groomer will be very grateful for, is if you have taught your pup to hold its head still for clipping and sc******ng. It is literally not possible for the groomer to trim a dog's face without holding it. To train this, start by holding the chin hair for a few seconds, then let go and treat if pup doesn't fuss.

Try not let go when pup pulls back, but instead just move your hand in time with the pup so they realise moving has no benefit. As soon as they relax, you relax your grip too and even let go to reward verbally and with a treat. If you let go when they are trying to get you to stop, it is teaching them they get rewarded by you letting go, which will often just encourage them to fidget more.

They need to learn and understand that holding still leads to a reward, and that not being still leads to no reward. Our groomers are happy to do a little training session with you to show you how to do this.

A few minutes of training a day is enough and it will make life much easier for everyone involved! Doing it this way it should be easy to get them to accept and even enjoy grooming quickly from the earliest age.

Some groomers, like Angel's, offer free regular washes up to an age of 6 months after the pup's first full groom. Use this option to get your pup to be relaxed at the groomers.

Did you know...
That getting mini grooms and wash and dry's for your dog (or cat) over winter can help them stay warmer when they are outside with an insulating layer of air in their coat rather than it being compacted?
Keeping your pet groomed through winter stops them getting matted and uncomfortable, often resulting in them being shaved off in spring.

It's not insulting to ask a new groomer for credentials or experience...

Where did they learn? For how long? Do the continue to upskill?
These are thd questions you should be asking well before price

Did you know that may groomers can help with skin issues?

Applying the product you get from the vet correctly is essential to how it works, but many groomers are also trained in "close-open-close" which is a technique of soothing and hydrating the skin to help break the cycle of itchy dry skin

National Dog Groomers Association has had specialists flown in for seminars on the topic of skin for their members.

There is more to grooming than just cutting hair :D
