Love this…for all dog owners everywhere!

A must read 👇

One of the most challenging aspects of being a reactive dog guardian are the limitations placed on my dog by society.

The idea that my dog doesn’t deserve freedom and the safety to be a dog, go on walks, or sniff the grass, simply because he is not like somebody else’s dog.
Because his comfort zone is bigger, or looks differently.
Because he has specific boundaries; ones that are different than another dog’s.

I have yet to understand how someone can honestly believe that my dog doesn’t belong, simply because he doesn’t fit into this impossible mold of a “perfect dog.”

I can do everything right - the training, the management, the safety layers, seek out on-leash areas where my dog should be safe to enjoy.

I don’t let my reactive dog run around off-leash (this would be irresponsible and unsafe to do so.) I’m not walking in close proximity to other dogs or people, which could put everyone in a precarious situation.
I do my best to seek out areas where he has enough space and is comfortable (not barking and lunging). This means that we miss out on a lot of fun hikes, beautiful trails, and exciting pet store shopping trips. That’s OK; we have adjusted his world to ensure he, and others, are safe in it.

Yet I am still hit with a brick wall of judgement, and a bitter lack of acceptance.

“If your dog doesn’t like other dogs sniffing him, you should leave him at home.”
”Your dog is aggressive, you should try training him.”
”Your dog shouldn’t be allowed out of the house.”

These accusations cut me to the core. My dog is a good dog. He may be flawed, he may not be ‘perfect’ in your eyes, but neither am I.
I’m willing to be you aren’t either.

Someone’s flaws don’t make them any less deserving of a happy, enriched, and quality life.

You don’t understand my dog’s boundaries?
That’s ok; you can still attempt to respect them.
You don’t understand why he needs space?
I get it; I didn’t understand either, at first. But you can still grant him that space, without fully appreciating the need for it,

My dog is reactive, he’s not damaged.

He deserves to live his life, and feel safe to do so.

Adolescence is typically a time for increased independence, exploration…& new challenges can pop up!

Prioritising predictable routines & a trusting, fun relationship can make these months all the more manageable!

It was beautiful to see Billy’s engagement, focus & connection with his person.

It’s this relationship that will help him navigate the rocky times & is our biggest asset when training & shaping our lives with a new furry family member.

Today we went over ways to mentally & physically meet Billy’s adolescent needs.

With boredom being one of the most common causes for nuisance behaviours in dogs, getting this right can prevent loads of behavioural issues later!

It’s addictive…it’s living…it’s being a dog!

Predation is everything to many dogs, yet can land them in a whole lotta trouble.

Recall off chase is hard, university level training but with consistent work and being your dogs favourite thing in the whole world it is possible!

Thank you Dean Nicholas & Sidekick Sid for sharing this excellent example of a recall of predation trained using reward based methods! 🙌 Love it!

(I’ve popped a video of Buddy & I in comments doing our practice).

🎓Billy's Puppy Board & Train 🎓

As Billy's time with us draws closer to an end, it's hard not to reflect on the past 3 weeks..not only has this mini tornado turned my house upside down (as all puppies do!) he's woven himself into a special place in my heart! 🖤🤍

When dogs come through our board & train programme all with different training & behaviour goals, my goal for them all is to establish a line of communication, confidence, new skills, life experiences and social skills that they can take home with them and build on with the support of their owners.

This montage of photos & videos are a tiny testament to Billy's hard work, fun loving time with us. He has grown not only in size but in skills and understanding of the world he's found himself.

So, as Dr Seuss once wrote...

"Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!"

I can’t wait to follow Billy’s journey through life together with his person!
If you're heading away and looking to add specific training goals to a homestay, or you simply don't have the time to implement the necessary training yourself, then this is the programme for you!

Homestay highlights….

What a pleasure it has been caring for this awesome bunch of dogs over the last few weeks!

We walked together, hiked together, swam together, hooned together and travelled together. From urban streets to sandy beaches and misty forests…we did it all!

I always love the closeness we get from living together, the laughs, new friendships & memories.

When I look back at the photos these are just some of my highlights 💕

Over the Easter weekend I was lucky enough to escape Auckland and attend the Aggression in Dogs and Defensive Handling Workshop presented by Michael Shikashio and hosted by the amazingly organised Annie at Your Whole Dog & Ryan at Animal Training Academy!

For me it was a moving, inspiring and humbling experience connecting with so many passionate & kind professionals.

The learning was phenomenal... the depth of knowledge and understanding of dogs AND people dealing with aggression was inspiring. The talk on emotions, case studies, difficult conversations and practical handling skills were just some highlights.

I loved every moment and have no doubt the ripple effect from this weekend has began already.

A dog is never just a dog!

I’m sure you’ve heard the nature OR nurture debate and I’m sure you’re all onboard with the fact it is both…nature AND nurture! Meaning it’s not just how you raise them, genetics matter…breed matters!

It’s easy to see the genetic hardware of the dog (the physical characteristics) and easy to forget the genetic software (the neurobiology, endocrinology, physiology, etc.) that comes along for the ride.

Many of our dogs we have living on our sofas were bred for certain qualities and environments….farm dogs for example were bred to work on a farm, they’re active with high physical and mental needs and naturally good herders. Take them out of this environment and we may see them herding kids, cars and literally bouncing of the walls. Undesirable and unhealthy behaviours will start being practiced or chronic frustration will set in.

The dog your considering (or have already) is the sum of many factors that began before conception and provides the blueprint for the dog you now have in front of you. Understanding this will help when trying to decide if a specific breed of dog is right for you.

It’s not just how we socialize, train, or manipulate the environment, we just aren’t that powerful…finding the right FIT between the environment you offer and the biological, the instinctual needs of the dog you’ve chosen matters!

Getting the fit right is complex and individual to your situation. I considered listing all the things I would consider before bringing a new dog into my home however the list wouldn’t be right or relevant to everyone. If you’re needing help with your research, your decision reach out to us, we want to see dogs and their people thrive.

The first decision is the most important!

Real world surprises are both stressful and inevitable...they can be life's curveballs that you never see coming, the sudden context changes and unexpected requests.

But in truth the only thing you can really expect is the unexpected. And the only thing you have any chance of controlling is the way you (& to some degree) your dog responds.

So how do you prepare for the unexpected?

For me, I train the basics REALLY well! These aren't the flashy, impressive tricks, they are the foundation behaviours, built and practiced with emotions and attitude in mind. They're stress-tested and become part of my everyday life where I use every opportunity to practice, test and work on some more.

I want my dog to TRUST I'll keep him safe in any situation, I want my dog to LOVE learning & training with me and have a great work ethic, I want impulse control and ATTENTION on me.

I want bomb proofed behaviours on verbal cue's and for me these are…

💯 recall,
🐾 middle,
✋ hand target,
👀 look,
❌ leave it,
🆘 emergancy down & u-turn,
🐕 loose leash walk and
🫶 a stationary behaviour.

And most importantly I want CONFIDENCE & RESILIENCE because there will be times you're not ready for the unexpected and the curveball will knock you over...it's in these times you'll need to pick yourself up, shake off, train some more and get back out there.

Today, the unexpected took us by surprise and while out on a typical morning walk, a walk we'd done 100 times before we were surprised when an off leash Doberman bounded across the road to greet us. The typical greeting of two unknown dogs occurred and the Doberman bounded off again on his merry way. When I looked up to see if he had any owners around there were two young girls and a toddler in charge and I couldn't help but think this could have ended so differently.

Have you ever had an unexpected curveball thrown your way? Feel free to share your experiences.

Dog training needs constant attention, much like a well nurtured garden.

And sometimes behaviour is just a symptom of something else and getting to the root cause (and treating that) more effective and long lasting.

Is the dog focussed and engaged?
Can he deal with frustration?
Does he enjoy the training?
What are his listening skills like?…..

My garden needs training !!

In the garden the other day I was busily removing some unwanted plants…. trying to eradicate the ‘lily of the valley’. The flowers may appear pretty but as it’s poisonous to my dogs it had to go…. And not just the surface flowers…. All of it…. Roots and all.
I dug seep and took hold of the roots; I pulled and gently teased.
I knew if I pulled out chunks or used a spade and ripped the roots my problems plant wouldn’t disappear. Yes, I would stop that year’s flowers but sure enough those left over roots would spring into life and there would eventually be new growth.
I had to make sure every bit of the root was found and ousted if I was to make my garden ‘poison plant free’. Once the villan has gone I can set to making the garden beautiful again… New ‘wanted’ plants can be added, watered and cared for. Soon I’m hoping my garden will look lovely but I know gardening is never ending & each year it will need fussing over.
I realised that much of my dog training is the same. My students might tell me they have a heelwork problem or a positions problem or maybe their retrieve isn’t fast enough. Often I don’t change the heelwork, I don’t address the positions and the retrieve isn’t a problem after all….. I try to look at the root cause…. Is the dog focussed and engaged, can it deal with frustration, does it enjoy the training, what are its listening skills like….. ?
A ‘lateral - thinking outside the box’ approach is how I like to work with my students. I like to look at the relationship, the mindset of dog and human. Yes, of course there is an element of teaching new exercises & revisiting old… I might tweak the hide work, I might proof the heelwork or I might re-adjust the sit at heel.
Like my gardening skills, my dog training needs constant attention and not just the surface work but the root cause too.

24/11/2022

It's difficult to teach a dog when you don't have their attention.

Sustained focus and control starts with ENGAGEMENT not nagging, not bribing, not shouting.

Training voluntary check-ins, eye contact and impulse control around distractions is the foundation for so many behaviours and a pre-requisite to training.

Once you have complete and undivided attention then teaching behaviours becomes simple.

If you’re struggling to get your dogs attention then lower the distractions in the environment and increase YOUR value.
