If you’re adding a new pet to your whanau over Christmas (for the life of the pet of course) - here’s some very helpful advice from the guru, Mark Vette - Animal Behaviourist

If you’re getting a pup this Christmas season, keep in mind what a huge transition it is for your pup to come from their mother’s den and their littermates to your home.

This big period of adjustment coincides with a fear imprint period, meaning your pup will be more sensitive to new things and experiences and more prone to frights.

Your home is a whole new environment full of unknown smells, noises, objects and experiences and your pup is experiencing so many firsts. Pups can easily develop site aversion so you want to ensure your pup’s new home feels like a place of safety and comfort.

The best thing you can do is make sure you create a calm, relaxed atmosphere, particularly for those first few days. Watch out for loud noises and ensure children are calm and not too noisy around the new pup. Include smells from the pup’s previous den/breeder if possible.

Be wary about:

- Having big crowds of people over for Christmas
- Taking your pup with you to Christmas events that may be crowded or noisy
- Going away from home during the holidays when your pup is still settling in (another big transition may be tough if your pup is very young)

Christmas can be a great time of year to get a pup when you’re off on holiday, just be conscious that you want things to be as calm and settled as possible for your new little one!

Christmas snow globes can be deadly… they contain antifreeze… all pet owners please read. I haven’t got any but if I did I would be giving it away to a non pet owner… 😢

Good old microchips strike again!!

THE POWER OF THE MICROCHIP

This lovely boy Toby had been hanging around a house in Sharps Road for a couple of weeks. The family posted him on facebook, and as a result Toby was brought to us to be checked for a microchip, and WOW. Toby had been missing from an address in WHANGAREI for over 6 months. Sadly this was the second time Toby had been "relocated", but a happy ending for him and his family.

Another wonderful reunion due to a microchip, after three years!

Another wonderful reunion due to a microchip, after three years!

We all love a happy ending and this one sure is. Mack here had been missing from his family for 3yrs. He came in yesterday and was scanned for a microchip which for him was lucky he did. We were able to find his old owners who had given up hope in finding him. They were happy to be reunited with him however and now he is back with his family. He wasn't to happy about being a photo boy, but I bet he's glad his adventures are over and he has a warm bed again.

Just 1 example why its so important to microchip your animals. You never know when they might find us again. So happy for you Mack.

Want to adopt a rabbit or have a rabbit? You must read this for the health and well-being of your bunny!! I’ve never had one and always thought those hutches would be fit for purpose… sadly they are not. Please read and pass on for the sake of the rabbits, thanks! Kim.

Why spend $600 on what amounts to a prison cell, when you could spend less than $500 on something that has the potential to be an amazing (safe) space for rabbits AND you to enjoy?? 🐇

The fact is, hutches are not designed with a rabbit's health and happiness in mind. Hutches were originally designed way back when humans first domesticated rabbits for meat and fur production. They're not meant for long-term use!! 👈

Below is a link to a post that outlines what you need to know about why a large amount of space is crucial for the wellbeing of rabbits, and why a hutch is never enough!!

The little hedgehog who kept being found 💕

Just a wee reminder of how precious all living critters are. And to give a thought for their needs during winter. V xx

NEVER underestimate the wonders of nature and all living creatures. This remarkable story about my little friend pictured. He was at home every night to feast on our cat biscuits left outside for our outdoor wild cat. Leaving behind his annoying little poos all over the courtyard. In one of those "good idea" moments, I thought..I will take him to the refuse station trees to hang out with our cats there, so he can still delight in cat bikkies everyday. A week later, I was surprised to see who I was sure was my little mate back at home eating the cat biscuits as usual. But, I thought "surely it can't be him" so painted a wee mark on his back to distinguish him and again took him back to the refuse station trees. Well that was a week ago. Tonight ..look who is back. I certainly love and respect all living critters, and this confirms undoubtedly that we often don't give them the respect they deserve. He is now part of the family to eat and poo all he likes. I will from now on delight in stepping in his poo, because he is one very cool hedgehog, and his little GPS is a natural wonder as is he! V xx

Lest We Forget... In tribute to one of the many animals who assisted in times of war and saved lives.

Caesar was a bulldog who was trained by the Red Cross to rescue wounded soldiers. He would be sent out onto the battle field to look for wounded men.

When he found a soldier he would look around for something to identify him such as his rifle, coat, hat or helmet. Caesar would then carry this back to his handler and he would then lead his handler and the stretcher men back out to where the wounded man lay so they could carry him back to safety.

Caesar would do this again and again and he is responsible for saving many lives.

Caesar died in action and his collar is displayed at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Caesar was the official mascot of the 4th Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade.

Caesar the bulldog, wearing his official collar, led the grand parade down Auckland's Queen Street before the Rifle Brigade left New Zealand for the war.

He was a trained Red Cross dog and helped rescue wounded troops during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Unfortunately, his name was often misspelt in most documents and even on his collar.

Lost pet fliers are laser targeted GOLD. It's a simple and perhaps "old fashioned" method when we are so used to finding everything online at our fingertips - but they often work! Especially with lost cats who usually tend go less further than dogs and stay more local.

Even in this digital day and age, lost pet flyers and posters are still a vital part of any lost pet marketing. Flyers are a laser targeted way to reach ev...

An excellent result from fellow MARN (Missing Animal Response Network) trained people overseas. Cece the cat was found after 77 days!
Again we see fliers and large neon signs bringing the result! Then the use of a humane trap once a specific sighting location was known ♥

Disturbing to see a recent Instagram post about a dog in the USA who arrived one morning, sitting on the people's "patio chairs" wagging his tail. They immediately assumed they should keep the dog! Of 394 comments only 3 challenged this and suggested they try to find the owner. The rest all congratulated this person on "their" new dog?!!

Now this is just not right, Finders are NOT Keepers!! Please do everything you can to reunite a lost pet. I've seen the pain of people whose pets never return and I've seen the "hair on the back of your neck raising" pure joy, when a pet is reunited. We all need to do our part in reuniting those lost pets. Here's the link to my blog "Finders NOT Keepers"...

PS Picture is one of my absolute favourites, the very moment an owner and her lost dog are reunited at SPCA ♥. This is why we do what we do...
