Have you ever wondered how a cat can land on their feet 99% of the time?

Cats have a righting reflex, which allows them to turn while in the air, so that they land safely on their feet. Using their sensitive ears, they are able to maintain balance and orient themselves, so they are not injured from a fall. It is believed that cats develop this reflex as kittens, and it is fully developed in as little as 7 weeks. They also have extreme flexibility and no collarbones which allows them to twist more freely.

While cats are able to land successfully on their feet after most falls, occasionally, accidents do happen. Factors such as a cats weight and age, or the distance of the fall can all impact whether or not a cat will land on its feet.

P.S Only 5 more days till our site closes! Feel free to check out the sales on our website. ❤️

Did you know that a popular Tokyo tourist destination is a statue of a dog?

Located at the aptly named Hachikō entrance/exit of the Shibuya train station, right by the infamous Shibuya Scramble Crossing, the Statue of Hachikō is a popular meeting place for locals and a beloved tourist destination.

The bronze statue depicts a real-life Akita, Hachikō, who is celebrated for his unwavering loyalty to his owner, Hidesaburō Ueno. They would always meet after Ueno’s commute home from work, and even after his owner’s death, Hachikō would return to their meeting spot every day for 9 whole years.

How cute is this! They’re definitely called ‘man’s best friend’ for a reason. Would you visit this statue if you went to Tokyo? Let us know in the comments below.

Did you know that dogs have amazing night vision?

Their eyes have sensitive rods behind the retina that collect dim light (humans have cones) and then a special layer of reflective cells called tapetum lucidem, act as mirrors and reflect the light that enters around the rest of the eye.

Not only that, their vision is influenced by Flicker Fusion Frequency (FFF), or the rate at which intermittent frames of light are perceived as a steady, continuous picture. Generally speaking, the faster a species moves through its environment, the higher its FFF. Dogs have a higher flicker fusion threshold than humans, so a TV screen that appears to show continuous motion to humans might appear to flicker to a dog. This means they have a sharpened ability to see flickering light which allows the dog to detect slighter movements in the dark.

Pretty cool, right?

F U N F A C T F R I - Y A Y

Yay, it’s Spring! Or is it?

Technically, there are four starting dates for the New Zealand Spring:

* Astronomical dates – based around the equinox and solstice, so nominally September 21.
* Meteorological dates – the tidy three-month division of the year into seasons, so September 1.
* The solar winter – the three ‘darkest’ months with the June 21-22 Winter Solstice in the middle, so about August 8.
* Nature – hard to pin down.

But can our furry friends detect a season change? Yes they can!

Dogs are able to sense barometric pressure changes. When the pressure in the air changes and charges in electricity change, it can alert the dog that changes in weather are happening. And all animals (as well as us humans) use ‘environmental cues’ such as warmer temperatures, longer daylight hours and the increased activity of plants and insects.

So we know that our fur babies don’t use dates for season changes, but what date do you use?

Happy Friday!

F U N F A C T F R I - Y A Y

You know those random pads on the wrist area of your dogs’ front legs? We probably just refer to those as ‘heels’, but did you know they actually have an important use?

They’re called ‘carpal pads’ and are used when your dog runs at speed or lands after a jump. When they run, there is a moment where they touch the ground and are used not only as cushioning but also help with ‘braking’ and shock absorption. Not only that, but they also help a dog balance and prevent sliding when climbing up steep slopes.

Have you seen them in use before or will you now purposely watch out for it?

Happy Friday!
