What is the Green Lipped Mussel?

As a loving pet owner, you always want the best for your furry friend. Whether it's providing a cozy bed, nutritious food, or the right supplements, your pet's well-being is your top priority. One supplement that's gaining popularity for its remarkable benefits is the green lipped mussel. But what exactly is this intriguing ingredient, and how can it help your pet?

Green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a type of shellfish native to New Zealand. It's known for its unique nutritional benefits, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin. These components make it a powerhouse for supporting joint health and reducing inflammation in both humans and animals.

TOP TIP 2 & 3...

Lifestyle: When it comes to your pet getting older, making adjustments to their lifestyle is important.

Engaging in activities such as leisurely strolls or swimming can provide assistance without exerting too much pressure on their physical well-being.

Therapies: Senior pets can benefit greatly from physiotherapy or hydrotherapy. These therapeutic options can help relieve pain, enhance mobility, and improve joint flexibility while also maintaining muscle tone and overall fitness.

Hydrotherapy, in particular, offers a low-impact solution that allows dogs to build muscle without the strain of land-based movements.

As your dog ages, their needs change.

Regular vet check-ups become more critical to catch age-related issues early. Adjust their diet to accommodate lower activity levels and potential health conditions. Provide soft bedding for joint support and consider supplements for arthritis or other age-related concerns. Keep them mentally stimulated with gentle exercise and interactive toys.

Love and attention are more important than ever in their golden years. ✨️

Tap into your dog's complete potential!

Enrichment empowers dogs by tapping into their natural instincts, promoting exploration, and uncovering new discoveries.

Engaging in a variety of activities, prevents boredom, increases self-confidence, and provides valuable problem-solving, search, and agility skills. It allows dogs to indulge in appropriate sniffing and chewing, while also serving as a perfect outlet for their boundless energy, resulting in a calm demeanor and the development of positive behavior.

Ideas to provide enrichment - food-based, scent-based, games with toys, environmental enrichment and training!

How to keep your pet safe with long term NSAID use? 💊

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly prescribed for pain and inflammation in both humans and animals. They are frequently used to manage chronic conditions such as arthritis or post-operative pain. Some familiar examples include Meloxicam/Metacam, Carprofen/Rimadyl, and Previcox.

As a responsible pet owner, there are steps you can take to minimize the potential side effects of NSAID medications. These include:

🔹Engaging in a discussion with your veterinarian to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
🔹Administering the correct dosage.
🔹Scheduling regular check-ups, which often involve routine blood work.
🔹Monitoring your pet for any possible side effects.

ATTENTION ALL DOG OWNERS! ⚠️

A dog in the Canterbury region has been found to have the parasite Babesia gibsoni - This parasite, which primarily uses ticks as its host, can also be transmitted through dog bites, blood transfusion, and from an infected mother to her puppies through the placenta.

Although this parasite is prevalent worldwide, it has never been observed in a dog bred in New Zealand until now.

The purpose of this information is not to cause alarm, but rather to make dog owners aware and encourage them to be proactive in protecting their furry companions from ticks.

Factors to consider to help you choose the correct diet for your dog! 🍽️
🔹 Age – dogs require different nutrients as they go through life. Be sure to choose a food appropriate for their life stage: Puppy, Junior, Adult, or Senior.

🔹 Breed – large breeds have different requirements for nutrients compared to smaller breeds. Giant and large breed puppies take longer to reach adult size so they require these nutrients for longer than their smaller breed friends leading to a longer duration of a Puppy diet.

🔹 Activity level – highly active dogs need more energy, for example working dogs will require more calories than a lap dog.

🔹 Health status (prescription diets) – dogs with specific health disorders need set nutrient requirements. For example, there are prescription diets available for patients with liver disease, kidney disease, arthritis, allergic skin disease, or endocrine issues.

🔹 Recovery after ill health – if your dog has had an acute health problem, such as gastroenteritis, or has had gastrointestinal surgery then they may require prescription foods to aid their recovery.

🔹 Allergies – food allergies and sensitivities can cause adverse reactions resulting in skin or ear disease, or gastrointestinal side effects. There are diets available that are more easily digested and help avoid adverse reactions.

🔹 Dental disease – dental diets are a great way to implement easy dental hygiene as part of your pet's daily routine. These are specifically shaped to help reduce tartar and plaque formation.

🔹 Obesity – if your pet is overweight or obese then obesity diets can help as part of their weight loss plan. These are higher in fiber and lower in calories.

🔹 AAFCO registered – A nutritionally balanced food contains the correct amount of every nutrient your dog needs, in the correct ratios, to keep them healthy in each daily meal. Completely balanced food is meant to be fed as their sole diet with no need to add anything else as all their nutrient requirements are being met. The Association of American Feed Control Officials, (AAFCO) nutrient profiles and certifies foods that meet the minimum daily requirement. Selecting a food that is certified by the AAFCO is highly recommended and helps avoid dietary imbalances.

Do you know about Parvo Virus? 🐕️

Sadly, New Zealand is seeing more and more cases as each year passes of this deadly virus. Parvo is a heavily resistant virus that can survive in the environment, including soil for several years. It commonly causes gastrointestinal illness in dogs - left untreated can be fatal.

We wanted to share some key points – and if you have any questions, you are welcome to comment below!

🔹 Unvaccinated dogs and puppies are at the highest risk of catching this.
🔹 Humans cannot get this virus – however can spread to other dogs extremely fast.
🔹 What symptoms are involved: Diarrhoea (sometimes involving blood), Vomiting, Inappetence, Depression, Dehydration.
🔹 What to do if I think my dog has Parvo – seek vet attention immediately and alert the team of the possibility of parvo. Isolate the situation and clean all areas and bedding with a strong disinfectant to prevent any spread.
🔹 How can I prevent my dog from catching Parvo? – Follow a strict vaccination protocol with your vet, do not let your puppy out of your house until they have had ALL vaccinations (usually after 16 weeks old.), remove your shoes before entering the house and good hand hygiene.

It is important to keep your dog up to date with vaccines, (Lepto and Kennel Cough every year and Parvo every 3 years!)

HEAT STROKE 🥵

What is heat stroke and what are the signs and symptoms.

Heat stroke is a big risk to our pets during the summer months. Dogs and cats have their core temperature tightly controlled to keep it within a safe level.

Heat stroke is caused by an inability to get rid of excess heat and keep the core body temperature at a safe level. As temperatures in the environment rise, they lose excess heat mostly through evaporation, via panting, and hypersalivation.

Dogs do not sweat like us, they have limited sweat glands around their nose and in their paws only, so their cooling mechanisms are limited. Their heat loss mechanisms can become overwhelmed, resulting in a rise in body temperature above its normal level of 39C causing hyperthermia. Heat stroke occurs when their temperature reaches dangerously high levels of 41.1C.

Hot, humid environments are prime conditions where we see heat stroke in pets. However, heat stroke can also happen because of strenuous exercise (exertional heat stroke), or as a result of tremors or seizures.
