Summer is a fantastic time for outdoor activities with our dogs, but one of the most overlooked dangers is hot concrete. As temperatures rise, concrete and asphalt can become scorching hot, posing significant risks to your dog’s sensitive paws. Here are 5 important ways to avoid injury!

Preventative Measures:
1.Time Your Walks: The best way to avoid hot concrete is by timing your walks during the cooler parts of the day. Early mornings or late evenings are ideal times when the pavement is cooler.
2. Test the Pavement: A simple way to check if the pavement is too hot by using the “seven-second test”. Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t hold it there comfortably for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paw.
3. Use Protective Gear: Dog booties or paw wax can provide a protective barrier between your dog’s paws and the hot pavement. While booties might take some getting used to, they can significantly reduce the risk of burns.
4. Walk on Grass: Whenever possible, opt for grassy areas or dirt paths instead of concrete. These surfaces are much cooler or gentler on your dog’s paws.
5. Stay Hydrated: Always carry water for your dog and take frequent breaks in shaded areas to prevent overheating.

Tick season is fast approaching - are your pets up to date and covered with preventable treatment?

As you can see in the graphic, they spend such a short time on the host that an individual tick will have hopped on, fed to near bursting, and dropped off all within a week. There will be many that have fallen off to moult or lay eggs already and there will be just as many likely to hop on next week, during the peak seasons.

Ticks typically have three life stages – adults, which feed on an animal then drop off to lay eggs; these hatch into larvae which crawl onto the animal and feed, then they drop off to moult into nymphs which in turn feed, drop off and moult into adults to start the cycle again.

It is important as pet owners to have up to date treatments for your furry friends, especially for more rural pets.

Make sure to check your flea treatment product, and what it covers! If you are not sure - we are here to help with any questions!

What is the Green Lipped Mussel?

As a loving pet owner, you always want the best for your furry friend. Whether it's providing a cozy bed, nutritious food, or the right supplements, your pet's well-being is your top priority. One supplement that's gaining popularity for its remarkable benefits is the green lipped mussel. But what exactly is this intriguing ingredient, and how can it help your pet?

Green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a type of shellfish native to New Zealand. It's known for its unique nutritional benefits, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin. TOP TIP 2 & 3...

Lifestyle: When it comes to your pet getting older, making adjustments to their lifestyle is important.

Engaging in activities such as leisurely strolls or swimming can provide assistance without exerting too much pressure on their physical well-being.

Therapies: Senior pets can benefit greatly from physiotherapy or hydrotherapy. These therapeutic options can help relieve pain, enhance mobility, and improve joint flexibility while also maintaining muscle tone and overall fitness.

Hydrotherapy, in particular, offers a low-impact solution that allows dogs to build muscle without the strain of land-based movements.

As your dog ages, their needs change.

Regular vet check-ups become more critical to catch age-related issues early. Adjust their diet to accommodate lower activity levels and potential health conditions. Provide soft bedding for joint support and consider supplements for arthritis or other age-related concerns. Keep them mentally stimulated with gentle exercise and interactive toys.

Love and attention are more important than ever in their golden years. ✨️

Tap into your dog's complete potential!

Enrichment empowers dogs by tapping into their natural instincts, promoting exploration, and uncovering new discoveries.

Engaging in a variety of activities, prevents boredom, increases self-confidence, and provides valuable problem-solving, search, and agility skills. It allows dogs to indulge in appropriate sniffing and chewing, while also serving as a perfect outlet for their boundless energy, resulting in a calm demeanor and the development of positive behavior.

Ideas to provide enrichment - food-based, scent-based, games with toys, environmental enrichment and training!

Be mindful on this Friday to show appreciation towards the veterinary medicine field.

Every day, veterinarians, nurses, technicians, receptionists, and all individuals involved work diligently to ensure your pet receives the utmost care. Although it can be a stressful occupation, the rewards are substantial.

Therefore, exhibit kindness, practice patience, and acknowledge that we all possess human emotions.
