This weekend, horse riders across Aotearoa will be taking to the roads to create and raise awareness around their vulnerability on the road. Organised by Pass Wide and Slow New Zealand close to 50 awareness rides are planned over 14-15 September to promote the important messages and educate drivers around the following tips ⤵️↔️ 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄: Give at least 2 metres space and slow down as you approach or pass.⛔ 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝘁: Toot, shout, rev your engine as you pass or drive away.✋ 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹: Take notice and follow the riders hand signals.🛻 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴: Take extra care when towing, make sure nothing is flapping or making noise as this can scare the horse.For more information about sharing the road with horse riders head to - https://bit.ly/4dYXlR6

INTRODUCING ONE OF OUR SPONSORED RIDERS DANA GENEFAAS!

Dana Genefaas started riding Mounted Games when she was 12yo, competing on and off while fitting in competitions with her other ponies in Showjumping and Eventing before making the call to focus solely on Games in 2009.

Dana has produced most of her own ponies and currently has a wonderful OTTB mare Star who is just starting to become established at Open level.

Dana’s greatest accomplishments in Games have been winning the Matty Slade Memorial Championship back to back in 2022 and 2023 and more recently being named on the NZ team as travelling reserve for the 2024 World Championships in Italy and riding member of the NZ team competing at the Royal Welsh Show 2024.

Rug Hacks, Tips and Tricks!

• Use duct tape in an emergency rug rip. It’s waterproof and hold the rip together for a day or two.

• Rugs dry more quickly if they are wet but not muddy. So, if your horse loves being covered in mud, leave the rug on the horse and hose the mud off.

• Dental floss is strong, waterproof, and easy to sew through thick rugs, making it useful for hand-sewing tears and patches.

• Use a thin cotton rug underneath a paddock rug if your horse is fully clipped to help keep the coat nice and clean.

• Spray silicone spray on the shoulders will help prevent cover rub, (more common when a horses more than one rug on)

• Horses that are especially prone to shoulder rubs, line the shoulders of the cover with pure silk. (find silk scarves at a charity shop to make patches out of)

• A lubricant spray is good to put on buckles and leg strap clips from time to time, as it helps repel water and keeps them moving freely.

Most commonly, horses with white or pink noses experience sunburn, but in some cases, sunburn can also occur along the protruding areas of the face, ear tips, and white leg markings.

Tips to avoid sunburn on your horse
- Provide lots of shade in paddocks and turnout areas and fields.

- Blanket your horse with a cool summer rug.
- Use a fly or sun mask.
- Provide plenty of fresh water.
