It’s learning time…

Erin Benzakein at is an inspirational flower farmer in the USA who many of us small flower farmers look up to for her knowledge, experience and resilience in leading the way as an innovative and creative small flower farmer.

Every year she runs the Floret Online Workshop to help participants to “Master the skills to grow an abundant cut flower garden or build a flower business in your backyard.”

Last year there were 25 scholarships awarded which were selected from 3,545 from 77 countries, and I was one of the scholarship winners!

The course officially kicked off in early January but I realised this timing was designed for the northern hemisphere’s winter downtime. While here in New Zealand at the same time we were just about to drop neck deep into our summer season!

I decided I needed to be sensible(!) and postpone my own starting of the course until our southern hemisphere winter arrived so I didn’t blow a gasket trying to grow, harvest and deep-dive-learn all at the same time.

So here we are, deepest darkest winter now, with a cracking frost just yesterday, and I’m about to embark on the Floret Online Workshop - I’m sooooooo excited to get started!!!

Everyone has their favourites and these were mine!

Not gonna lie, this was a hard call to make but these were the dahlias that captured my heart this season. I know this is very subjective and not everyone will agree with me but these were the standouts here on the farmlet for 2024 💗☺️💗

Not only were they stunning blooms in themselves, they were also solid plants delivering long, strong and prolific quantities of blooms 💫💫

Which were your favourites?

Now, THESE are the types of photos of me I like the best on the farmlet 😆🫣

The blooms are the stars of the show here where I’m the ‘enabler’ of the sharing of the floral love rather than being the centrepiece myself.

Huge thanks to the creative talent that is Yolande for capturing me at work on the farmlet ☺️🌸💚

When I saw this bone handled (is it really bone?) knife at an op-shop years ago I was teleported back to my grandparents small round Formica kitchen table watching my grandfather’s huge hands slathering butter onto slabs of white bread to accompany his dinner.

It’s just a utensil, but “oh!” the fond memories of staying over at my grandparents house as a small child. I had to have that knife!

These days, even though it wasn’t his knife I like to think I have my grandfather with me as I use ‘his’ style knife to lift my seedlings out of the trays and into the bays for planting - it’s the best tool for the job!

THIS!!! 💪🏻💪🏻

Have you ever wondered how ‘early spring flowers’ are achieved?

THIS 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻 is how. Now is the time to plant ‘hardy annuals’. These are the flowers that are hardy enough to survive the winter, get established and ready to go, so that as soon as there’s just enough daylight hours and the weather begins warming up a teeny bit in spring their flowers are ready and waiting to giddy-up on out as fast as they can.

It’s been a mad busy time whipping out all of the old summer flowers and preparing the beds for these early spring flowers including: Canterbury Bells, snapdragons, nigella, larkspur, foxgloves, poppies and more. As much as it’s hard yakka turning it all around this last few weeks it’s soooooo exciting to know that the clock is now counting down for all of these lovelies to come along in spring - ooooooooh, the anticipation! 🙃

PS: Lesson learned the hard way from some rushing about last season - everything being dropped in for spring onwards is being set up with fertiliser, irrigation lines AND netting at planting time. No more …. “I’ll have plenty of time to set those up before the plants get much bigger… 🙄🙄)

OHMYGOSH…

The last few weeks have been spent waiting, fretting and then waiting some more 🫣🫣

BUT, TODAY WAS THE DAY… my zinnia seed order from was delivered. I’ve very nearly blown a gasket with excitement!

I now have my hot little hands on a unique selection of zinnia colours from heaven - champagnes, blush, peach, creams, lemons, lavender, honey and cantaloupe.

My biggest thanks in the world to my friend Rosie for helping to make this magic happen 💫✨💫

And just like that the great dahlia lift has begun!

Here in Auckland our winter is too wet to run the risk of leaving the dahlia tubers in the ground to rot and I need the space for my spring bulbs and corms anyway!

It’s a speedy turnaround now post Mother’s Day. So the tubers are being cut down and lifted and the raised beds prepped for the poppies, ranunculus and tulips in their place 😳 It’s all go around here! 🏃🏻‍♀️ 🏃🏻‍♀️

PS: I still can’t get over how big and ugly dahlia tubers are below ground when they are so magnificent and beautiful above!

Our fresh flower ‘season’ started the first week of August last year and sadly now, we’re wrapping up in May.

In that time we’ve grown many new flower varieties, started delivering local Bouquet Subscriptions, become a regular at the Central Flea Market and even produced a few wedding bouquets! It’s been a wonderful season of colours, textures, tones and scents. I’m already excited about what the next season has to offer ☺️☺️

We’ve still got dried flowers available but the fresh flowers have said ENOUGH! So that’s a wrap for us for a wee while until the spring lovelies start all over again in August. And we’ve got some lovely new darlings lined up for you then…WATCH THIS SPACE!! 🌷 🌸 🌱

Thank you all so much for your ongoing support, engagement and interest in the Urban Floral Farmlet here in Te Atatu Peninsula. It’s been a blast so far and it can only get better from here on in!! 💫💫

With the season coming to an end I finally found a spare window of time to have a play with my ‘deadhead’ bucket of dahlias and a few other bits and pieces I’d gathered up.

It’s wonderful fun to experiment with these blooms in a vessel rather than in a bouquet which is my usual format. And this smokey blue jug is one of my very favourite ‘vessels’! 😆

While I was at it I set up a photoshoot backdrop and went the while hog with my ‘playing’ - but then I couldn’t decide which of these shortlisted photos was my favourite!? I love the intimate closeup for all the details but the wider angled options offer more context and sense of time of day and place 🧐

Which is your favourite? Let me know in the comments 👇🏻👇🏻

A huge thank you to all of my local subscribers who have supported me throughout this season!

I’m so grateful to have the support of local flower lovers 💚🌸💚

I often don’t see my subscribers as I merrily cruise about delivering my bundles of floral joy each week but it is a special treat when people are home so we can have a wee natter - was lovely to catch up this week Robyn! 💗😉 Robyn Dixon

Technically speaking this is a bucket of deadhead dahlias 🥹🥹

Deadheads are spent flowers that we take off the plant to either help produce more, new flowers, or in this case, allow the dahlia plants to start sending sustenance back into the tubers below ground in preparation for winter.

In this case also though, this particular flower farmer hasn’t had enough floral fabulousness in her own home so she’s taking these stunning babies (no matter how tired, floppy or nibbled they are!) into the workshop to fashion up into a vase for herself (rather than throwing them onto the compost bin!).

This dahlia section of the farmlet is being ‘retired’ for the season now so that these plants can begin to hunker down for winter.

It’s hard to believe these dahlia blooms have all come from cuttings that were only planted in December! 😳

My dad looks after my cuttings nursery at my parent’s place and I had originally thought he would only be ‘growing’ tubers but it turns out those little cuttings are the cuttings that could - flower and grow tubers at the same time. Amazing! 🌱✨

It’s official, we have a winner!

The dahlia of the season at the Urban Floral Farmlet has been Caitlyn’s Joy. A gorgeous cerise pink that has depths of deep orange and some stunning purple high notes just to add to the dramatic effect.

Not only have the blooms been fabulous but the plants have been sturdy and solid performers throughout the season. I’m hoping this translates to plenty of tubers being produced underground too!

It was a tight race though! Chasing hard on Caitlyn’s heels was the sunny Sweet Suzanne and last year’s winner, Cornel Bronze.

In all honesty, I love them all, but these three have really been the standouts here this season 🩷💛🧡

It’s that time of the year when change is afoot - seeds are being sown for spring, Sweet Peas have been direct sown into their crates under their frame ready to start climbing up, the ranunculus have been potted up for pre-sprouting AND the tulip bulbs (too scared to tell you how many I ordered this year! 😳) are chilling down now too.

Btw: even though I know I could be much more scientific about my seed sowing I’m very happy with my box and cafe trays underneath 😆 As you can see, the seeds and the resulting seedlings seem to be enjoying the growing conditions too! 🤪

This made me laugh out loud today 😆
I’ve seen a number of “what’s in my pockets/handbag?” posts lately and they’re all so beautiful, with curated items that look so organised and in synch.

I pulled out my pockets today and this is the selection I found 👆🏻👆🏻

It makes me think of that meme where there’s 37 tabs open on someone’s laptop and they don’t know where the music is coming from? 😳 🎶

I think the contents of my pocket are a good metaphor for where I’m at just now, nearing the end of the summer season - there are lots of jobs on the go at once - labelling some dahlias before I forget which is which; taking off the laterals of other dahlias so I can encourage a few more reasonable sized blooms before they shut up shop for the season; zip-ties, tbh these things are a lifeline, they are brilliant for fixing up any number of on-farm issues; snips - wouldn’t go anywhere without them; stray rubber bands - you never know when a bunch of stems might need to be secured; mobile and earbuds, I don’t think I could run the farmlet at all without them(!); gloves, which I should wear more often so then I wouldn’t need the tissue and plasters for the wee snip-snip accidents; keys to the workshop, which if I don’t keep them on me I will assuredly lose. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t know how people get by on the flower farm without a billion pockets to fill with all of the ‘necessaries’!

What do your pockets look like?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE eucalyptus in bouquets. The gorgeous blues, blue-greens, greys and silvers are such a wonderful contrast to the pinks, peaches and oranges of the blooms here on the farmlet.

But OHMYGAWD, growing them takes soooooooo long!! I’m pretty sure my life’s lesson is to work on improving my patience. But boy these trees are testing me to the absolute limit. The temptation to nibble off stems and branches here and there is huge and I know I should be leaving them so they can build up a good solid frame from which to be harvesting, but I REALLY want to use them.

I’ll guiltily admit (but am NOT sorry! 😤) that I have taken some stems off sooner than I should, but I couldn’t resist, they’re just to good to pass by!

The Baby Blues and Nicholii are pretty close to being properly harvestable but the Parvula (small leafed blue gum) is going to take a million years to grow by the looks of it (lesson: growing a slow growing tree from seed is not the fastest way to get the result you’re after 🙄), but once they get going they’re of the Coppicing variety which means I’ll be able to hack away at them to my heart’s content and they’ll just keep on coming back! ☺️☺️

“Patience, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success” – Napolean Hill.

Sounds like the perfect quote for this flower farmer today! 💪🏻

Not everything goes to plan. It has been such a busy season of sowing, planting, harvesting, promoting and marketing, delivering and selling that there are some things that have just fallen by the wayside 😒
These poor wee seedlings have sat in their trays expectantly waiting to be planted out into their bays on the farmlet so they could go forth and blossom, literally!
Ooof, but there just haven’t been enough hours in each day and my to-do list has kept on shifting with other, higher priority jobs, so these poor guys have missed out.
Now that the flower season is starting to starting to slow down a bit I might get the chance to plant them, but they’re looking a bit stressed and stunted, so they mightn’t make it at all - we’ll see!

Over the winter I worked hard (went shopping… 🫣) to source and expand my apricot, peach and blush dahlia stocks. Not only was there ‘shopping’ but also careful overwintering and storage of my existing stock which meant I was then able to divide to further grow the inventory.

All of that research, tending, and often, anxious watching and waiting, is paying off this season with a flush of gorgeous peachy sunset tones that make me smile every time I see them. Hopefully you do too!

I usually like to take photos that capture the wider context of where a bloom is planted on the farmlet and who its neighbours are. But there is definitely something to be said for zooming in on the details sometimes. The dahlias and now the latest succession of zinnias are proving to be lovely subject matter ☺️

Ammobium - love it or hate it? 🤔

There are so many things to talk about with ammobium - fresh vs. dried, straight vs. insanely curly, open vs. closed blooms, huge triffid-like stems vs. delicate tendrils and, of course, love it vs. hate it!!

While it looks ‘nice’ in fresh wild bouquets I believe it’s an absolute showstopper as a dried flower - long/short/curly/straight/chunky/spindly - THE LOT - I love it!

There, I said it.
It can’t be unsaid now 🤗

Every Urban Floral Farmlet bouquet is pinned with a card; and that card is a megatronic multi-tasking tool working hard for you and your flowers! ☺️💪🏻

We like the branding on the front, and the contact details are useful there too. The card is also doing the exacting job of holding the bouquet’s wrap in just the right way to best protect and present your flowers🌸

Drumroll please! 🥁 🥁 🥁💫

But it’s on the flip side of the card where the useful magic really lies for you. Tadaaaah!! 💫💫 Here are your Care & Handling top tips. These will help your bouquet to be the bestest bouquet it can be while lasting the longest it can too.

These tips are especially helpful just now as the temperatures and humidity are 🚀🔥 here in NZ.

Hope you find these tips helpful!
You’re welcome 🙏🏻👋🏻

BLOOM CARE & HANDLING

To help your cut flowers live their best life:
🌱 Remove any leaves on the stems that will be below the waterline.
🌱 Trim 2cm off the stems before putting them into fresh water in a clean vase.
🌱 Change or top up the water every second day and trim 2cm from the base of the stems at a 45 degree angle then too (this helps achieve best water absorption).
🌱 Discard any wilted or dropping blooms.
🌱 Keep your blooms out of direct sunlight and away from heat. (this also means don’t leave your flowers in a hot car if you can help it 😇 )

Perseverance is great when you’re on the other side of it. Not so much when you’re frustrated and impatient with a plant/s that isn’t behaving the way it ‘should’ and are in the middle of it 🥴

Last year my Sweet Suzanne dahlia blooms were small, few and far between and overall, a bit(!) disappointing. Even the tuber production below the surface was poor too. I hung in there though, as last ‘summer’s weather was dreadful at best and maybe it wasn’t the plant or my lack of care I should have been blaming but rather the 2023 growing conditions?

Well, two weeks into this season and ol’ Sweet Suzy is paying me back for the second chance big time. 💛💛 They are blooming like crazy, huge flowers and on stems taller than me! I’m hopeful I’ll get more tubers from these ladies too so I can share more of the floral love when it comes time for our next tuber sale. 🫶🏻💛

Late last year I had the privilege of putting together a wedding bouquet for this gorgeous bride. Emma was the most relaxed bride I’ve ever seen. She gave me an open brief to produce a bouquet using seasonal flowers and lots of colour and textures.

Thank you for the opportunity and the thrill/anxiety Emma and congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Gregory! 💞🥂

I’m re-setting my clock ⏰

Over the last two years I’ve wrestled with when to start, and more difficult, when to stop my working days. There’s always loads to fill a day but I know I need to take a break to refill the tank and maintain a ‘healthy balance’. Easier said than done I’m finding!

I’ve decided to trial something that I’m reckoning is closer to a Mediterranean approach (my Croatian heritage is shining though apparently!) where I’m starting early(to avoid the heat), taking a break in the middle of the day(to avoid the heat), and then restarting again late afternoon/early evening(to avoid the heat) - there’s a bit of a theme there right? 🔥 🔥 😂

Up until now I’ve ploughed on throughout the day over the summer and, as much as I love daylight savings, that translates to huge days. There’s also a sense of guilt about stopping in the middle of the day when it’s light out that I just can’t shake 🫨

One thing I know for sure, I won’t be having a siesta during that mid-day break! The ‘active-rester’ in me couldn’t cope with that at all, lol!

I’ll let you know how I get on! 🤞🏻

If you’re forward thinking fashion-wise, we’ve got you covered this summer for flowers!

The clever folks at the Pantone Colour Institute have just announced that the Pantone colour for 2024 is Peach Fuzz, described as: a gentle peach sitting between pink and orange. Emanating a warm and inviting aura, Peach Fuzz introduces a fresh new take on softness.

Here at the farmlet we’ve planted a large variety of dahlias in a range of shapes, sizes and colours, including whatever it is that you might think is ‘Peach Fuzz’! 🧡🩷🧡

Check out just a few of the selection that will start rolling out soon! 👆🏻👆🏻
