But there is hope if we focus on getting the basics right first,

Often touted as the greatest 20th century classical rider, Oliveira taught and trained all his life, both in his homeland of Portugal and around the world, carrying on the principles of the earlier great European masters in pursuit of achieving perfect understanding and harmony between horse and rider.

Get the basics right
Nadine, who now teaches from her own stable in Portugal and in regular clinics in the United States and Australasia, focuses on continuing that legacy of creating harmony.

“My approach to dressage is based on respecting the horse and his balance,” says Nadine. “The horse has to carry himself; he cannot even do simple things if he is not first balanced correctly. I find that often there is too much focus on the end result and wanting to do things too quickly; and it is unfortunate that when things aren’t happening, the horse gets the blame.
It’s important to take the time to consolidate the basics properly; after that, even movements such as piaffe and passage become easy, even if the horse is not a real athlete.”

Since I have been on my Classical Dressage journey I have also been thinking about the types of saddles that they used to use. For those that don't know my horse had his back damaged by a saddle, ended up with kissing spines and it was the end of his dressage career, but it was also the start of our Classical Dressage journey.
So when last year I discovered that Heather Moffett a well known Classical dressage coach and equi simulator rider coach had her own range of soft tree saddles I just had to know more!
As it turns out Heather and I share the same values and beliefs on most things and I took the leap of faith and brought one of her saddles from the UK!
I have really struggled with just sitting in a saddle since having kalei, even at a walk was uncomfortable and I felt I literally just couldn't sit!
This saddle has a memory foam seat and not only does it mold to the rider but molds to the horse as well. The stirrup bars are set further back then most saddles so it doesn't feel like you have to keep pulling your leg back ,it just sits in the right position. Because the tree is made out of leather it is completely flexible. There are no gullet plates. It literally can go on nearly every horse.
So I was totally sold and convinced a few people to buy one too!
One day I jokingly said to Heather well since I'm selling all these saddles for you, you should make me your New Zealand Sales Rep.
And she has!

Donna! Super laid back give anything a go. She had a turn on the working equitation course at the rally today! $4,500 Ono. 4 years old 14.2hh. Has been started under saddle and ridden down the road in just a neck rope! Perfect pony for working equitation, cow boy challenge and hacking!
