After this mare had a mishap on a gate post, we were able to get her stitched up fast thanks to Harry, Kathryn, and Libby.

The owner did an amazing job managing her recovery. Once the stitches came out, the wound was treated with equine super goo to help with healing 🐴

Strangles Outbreak Update 💉🩺

Reports have confirmed a case of Strangles in North Canterbury, involving a single horse that traveled from the North Island. The horse has been isolated, and no other horses in contact with it have shown symptoms. At this stage, the likelihood of a large-scale outbreak remains low.
Strangles is a respiratory illness caused by the Streptococcus equi equi bacteria. It typically causes nasal discharge and swelling of the lymph nodes in the head and neck area. While the mortality rate is low, affected horses can become quite ill, and recovery can be slow. Common signs to watch for include:
• High fever (>38.3°C)
• Nasal discharge
• Swollen lymph nodes

Please note that these symptoms can also be linked to other illnesses.

With the Horse of the Year (HOY) event on the horizon, now is a great time to be vigilant about your horse's health. If you're planning to travel or compete in the coming months, be sure to review your horse's vaccination history and consider updating it if necessary. While a vaccine for Strangles is available, it is not 100% effective, so vaccinated horses can still contract the disease.

Last night, we had the pleasure of celebrating our equine tech Nic, who has been with the Vet Services team for an amazing 20 years. Starting as a nurse and then transitioning to the equine tech role about 4 years ago, Nic has become an irreplaceable part of our team. We couldn't imagine our team without her!

🐴🌟 Success Story! 🌟🐴

We’re thrilled to share Bubbles' incredible recovery! After facing ongoing respiratory issues, Bubbles' owner consulted with Henry, and it was decided that our nebuliser treatment would be the best option. The results have been amazing—Bubbles is back to competing and feeling stronger than ever! Her owner was so impressed with the treatment that they’ve even purchased their own nebuliser to continue supporting Bubbles at home.

If your horse is struggling with respiratory issues, don’t hesitate to reach out! We offer nebuliser hire to help your horse breathe easier and recover faster.

Contact us today for more details on how we can assist your horse’s health!

With all the young calves and lambs running around enjoying the spring weather, it is a timely reminder to ensure you have your lamb and calf meal stored safely so that horses, pigs, alpaca and dogs can’t access it.

While these feeds are fantastic for rapidly growing young calves and lambs, the products can pose a very serious danger to dogs, horses, alpaca and pigs. Many calf and lamb feeds contain coccidiostat medications known as ionophores, such as monensin (Rumensin) or lasalocid (Bovatec). Cattle and other ruminants are able to digest and process these ingredients safely, but monogastric species cannot.

Dogs are not quite as susceptible as horses, where even tiny doses can have devastating consequences. However, there can also be a cumulative effect, where if there are repeated small exposures over time, this can eventually lead to toxicity. Certainly it is not worth taking the risk of finding out what amount might cause a toxic effect and it is simply best to avoid all exposure!

As is often the case, prevention is better than cure. Animals living in rural environments such as farms and lifestyle blocks are at particular risk. Have a careful look to see if you have any products containing ionophores on your property. If you do, make sure to always store them away safely and when feeding your livestock ensure that your dogs, horses and pigs cannot access to them either. If you have a susceptible animal get into a product containing ionophores, it is definitely an emergency situation and you should contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
