Cat Rescue Christchurch Cat Rescue Christchurch helps stray cats using the trap-neuter-return (TNR) humane method. LOVE THE STRAYS………….

We benefit the community by catching and desexing stray cats and kittens, particularly unsocialised (unhandleable) strays, and socialising and re-homing the cats and kittens where possible, in order to reduce the number of stray cats in the community. We mainly deal with the stray cat population, and not people's pets, as no other organisation in ChCh help unsocialised stray cats.

Barn Cats for Adoption

We have some lovely healthy, desexed cats in need of new outdoor homes. These cats are unsocial to humans and are best suited to live on a farm, horse stable, or other suitable outdoor location.

Veterinarian care has been given to all our barn cats to ensure they are healthy and desexed before arriving at their new home. Your responsibility will be to provide daily food and water, and protection from the elements. They will repay you with keeping your pest population down.

After a short period of secure confinement, the cats will learn this is their new barn home and will help keep rodents away.

You will enjoy watching the cats and have the satisfaction of giving them a much-needed home. You’ll need to have your own property or have permission for long-term placement of animals on the property you rent.
As we are a non profit charity, we ask for a donation towards costs if you are adopting a barn cat.

We will assist you while the cats settle into their new home. See this post for a lovely update from a family who adopted a pair of barn cats and how they got them settled. https://www.facebook.com/catrescuechristchurch/posts/778214391013962

Please contact us at [email protected] if you wish to adopt one or more barn cats.
(Our barn cats are in the same run and are able to be adopted in pairs, trios, or any number you wish!)

Billie: 9 years old

Billie is a sweet little lady. She is quite shy around new people but once she is comfortable she is a very smoochy cat. She is an older girl who is quite content to find a warm spot to curl up and nap.
Billie has previously had problems with tartar on her teeth. She has had a dental and now has dental treats on a regular basis to help prevent further build up.

Billie would prefer a quiet home with someone who is patient and willing to give her time and space to come out of her shell. She has been okay with other cats in foster care but is frightened of dogs.

All our cats are: Desexed; Wormed; Flea-treated; Vaccinated; Microchipped and come with a Collar and ID tag.

We ask for an adoption fee of $150 for Billie to help cover our costs.

If you would like to offer Billie a forever home, please fill in our adoption form at http://www.catrescue.org.nz/adoption-form/

Paige's Story:

Paige came into our care when we were called to trap a cat who had kittens on someone's property.
We had no idea what to expect: was she unsocial? Friendly? Somewhere in between?

It turns out that Paige is the sweetest little cat with so much love to give.

Now, as a devoted mama, she’s safe with us, making sure her 4 kittens get the best possible care.
Once they’re old enough, they’ll find loving forever homes. As for Paige? She’ll be returning to a familiar place—this time, with a family who adores her.

Miki: 4 years old

Miki, short for McCatski, is a young cat with a lot of personality. Miki is a little uncertain when she first meets new people but she is very playful and food-obsessed once she feels comfortable. Miki enjoys pats and cuddles on her terms, and isn’t afraid to let you know once she’s had enough.

While Miki is currently in foster care with other cats and dogs, she does not enjoy the company of others and would prefer to be in a single pet household. Miki has scar tissue on her side from a previous illness. She currently takes fluoxetine daily. This will need to be continued in the medium to long term in her new home. The cost of this medication is approximately $30-40 a month.

All our cats are: Desexed; Wormed; Flea-treated; Vaccinated; Microchipped and come with a Collar and ID tag.

We ask for an adoption fee of $150 for Miki to help towards our costs.

If you would like to offer Miki a forever home, please fill in our adoption form

We have received this lovely update from a family who adopted a cat recently from us:

"Thought I'd send you an update on Maisie (Misty). She is fitting in fabulously. She loves playing with all the toys, especially the laser, tunnel and balls. She and Keke are getting on so well together. They have fun playing, chasing each other and running up and down the stairs, and with the toys. When I take Maisie into our little courtyard, where she can't escape, for a little outside time, Keke is very protective. If Maisie gets too close to an area Keke uses to exit the property, Keke bops her or picks her up and moves her back where she thinks she's safe. Keke treats Maisie like her baby sometimes, also helping her clean her bottom. I think they will be the best of friends. Maisie loves to snuggle and is growing really well. We love having her."

We love getting your updates, please send them together with some photos to [email protected] We do not reveal your name or contact details on social media.

Cat bellies: to rub, or not to rub?

Cats have evolved as both predators, and prey to larger animals in the wild. As prey, the last thing cats want is for a larger predator to have access to their most vulnerable area where vital organs are located. The typical response for cats who have their stomach touched, is to spring into defensive mode. Your cat may grab your hands with their paws (if you’re unlucky, those claws will also be extended and ready for defense) and then maybe even bite. Your cat isn’t being mean to you – it’s a natural protection reflex.

There are some cats who do enjoy a belly rub, especially if you've conditioned your cat to that touch early on in kittenhood. Always pay attention to your cat's body language and respect those petting location preferences.

A lovely adoption update from a couple who adopted two kittens:

"My partner and I adopted Barb (renamed Clove) and Barrie (renamed Pepper) in November last year.
Clove and Pepper have really come out of their shells since we got them, they now cuddle with us every night (when they aren't chasing each other). Clove loves toys with bells and Pepper loves toys with feathers, they have plenty of each and you can often hear bell jingling upstairs. They're exploring the downstairs area now too and will even poke their heads out and come to meet guests. Clove has been playing on the cat tower a lot and Pepper is fond of the cat tunnel. They also love burrowing under the sheets in bed and nestling in next to us.
Both of them seem very happy and healthy and we wanted to say thanks to their foster family for looking after them so well before we could adopt them."

We love getting adoption updates! Please send your update and photos to [email protected]. We don't reveal your name or contact details on social media.

We have received this wonderful update from a family who recently adopted two kittens:

"We adopted brother and sister, Ziggy (was Oreo) and Snowball a week ago and they are already totally settled in and very much a part of our family. Our primary-aged kids absolutely adore them, as do we. They are lovely, cuddly, and very playful kittens, and they are also the best of friends, which is what we wanted - 2 balls of cute happy mayhem, really! We are so happy to have adopted them and look forward to having them in our lives for many years to come. Thank you for all the wonderful work that you and the foster families all do."

We love getting adoption updates! Please send your update and a couple of photos to [email protected]. We do not reveal your name or contact details on social media.

Please go over to Barry's Food Bank page and give them a like or follow: this group of lovely volunteers provides food for cats and dogs in need throughout mid and south Canterbury. If you are able to help them with donations of pet food or money, please get in touch with them. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0GuYveMNT2DGY64Y5U8fNbLcnzjMegTWoXfALJ8jx1fY185q98X5QXxFJueubCqVZl&id=61554926204723

Exactly a year ago today a group of local ladies got together and Barry's Food Bank was born 🐈🐕⭐️🥳

As a team we have been very busy most weekends delivering pet food to the local community and sometimes when possible futher afield . 🛻🐾

We have delivered to over forty homes, local Foodbanks, Orana Tamariki and also given support to 3 amazing animal rescue groups 🐈🐕🐈 🛻🛻🛻

This has only been possible because of the fantastic support that we at Barry's Food Bank have ourselves received .

A rough estimate of the amount of pet food that has been donated is well over $25,000!! 😲

A year has gone by so very fast and at the beginning we could never of imagined the amount of support that we were about to receive. We are extremely humbled by you all 🙏

BFB has sadly proved that there is a great need for pet food support in the community and will with your help continue to provide food and make sure lots of pets (who are dearly loved by their owners) will now have full tummies, where as before they may have gone without . 🥺🐶🐱

Massive thanks to all of the businesses and our very treasured supporters who we cannot name ( but you know who you are 😍) and also not forgetting "Barry" for making BFB the success it truly has become 🙏 🥰🥰

Here's to you all, bring on 2025 😍 🥂🍾

With all the adoptions lately, it's a timely reminder about adjustment periods for your new furry family member!

Did you know about the 3-3-3 Rule for adopting a new cat (or any pet)?

As a general guideline, it takes 3 days to decompress; 3 weeks to learn your routine and 3 months to feel at home. So give your new kitten or cat the time and patience to allow them to become well integrated into their new home.

** And an important reminder that all newly adopted cats need to be kept indoors for at least 4 weeks, preferably up to 6 weeks, so that they can become acclimatised to their new environment, and kittens should be kept indoors for at least 8 weeks with supervised outdoor access only until they are big enough to protect themselves outdoors. Letting cats and kittens go outside too early increases the risk of them getting lost. The same applies when you move house. Cats bond strongly to their environment so need time to work out any new place. **

Cleo: 13 months old

Will you be my hero? Have you got some time to spend with me to help me shine?
My name is Cleo and I’m a beautiful girl, with a very gentle nature. I am seeking a home where I can slowly become more confident with people and louder noises.
In return I am eager to give you hours of unwavering love and loyalty.

I am becoming a little more curious now to see what the world will offer me. While I have enjoyed the company of cats at my foster home, I’m not particularly fond of dogs. I do love to sit quietly on a knee to watch a bit of TV, but if the large spaces get too loud and busy, I’m likely to seek refuge in quiet areas.

I would be grateful to have a peaceful home, maybe with another cat. Will you give me the chance to show you?

All our cats are: Desexed; Wormed; Flea-treated; Vaccinated; Microchipped and come with a Collar and ID tag.

We ask for an adoption fee of $150 for Cleo to help cover our costs.

If you would like to offer Cleo a forever home, please fill in our adoption form:

Oliver: 3 years old

Oliver is a very pretty boy with personality plus, such a sweetie. Once settled in, Oliver will sit on your lap or beside you on the bed. He will also follow his humans everywhere.

His playful side will show, chasing his toys; however Oliver will let you know when he's had enough, a small, sharp mew will tell you to leave him be.

Oliver is best suited to a quiet home with no children or other pets.

All our cats are: Desexed; Wormed; Flea-treated; Vaccinated; Microchipped and come with a Collar and ID tag.

We ask for an adoption fee of $150 for Oliver to help cover our costs.

If you would like to offer one Oliver a forever home, please fill in our adoption form
