* RIPPLE ROUNDUP * 5th-11th August

A fruitful week for the Thoroughbreds, and fruitless week on the Standardbred front.

IFF I GET PAAID - 2nd
”She was beaten by a whisker in a close finish, finishing off outstandingly from the back again. She ran the fastest 800, 600, 400, 200m of the race. She’s been trying her hardest and deserves a winning photo. She may have 1 or 2 more runs, then a freshen up before the spring racing. We’re really proud of her”

HEADING TO NOOSA - 3rd
“Another much improved performance, got held early in the run home and finished with purpose. He’s still learning the game and should continue to improve with racing. Really happy with his progress”

MAJOR PERFORMER - 6th
“This mare featured again in the stipes report (Held up throughout the run home). I feel she could have won almost any of her last 6 starts, but just not getting the opportunities she deserves. She’s a nice mare, and could keep getting better with another campaign”

Just the one runner tonight Addington Raceway, Miss luckless herself Major Performer.

Race 10 9.21pm - Major Perfomer - John Dunn
“Luckless run continues, ace draw and gun driver aboard. Hopefully she doesn’t end up too far back, with luck a major player”

Good luck to her connections.

Not quite time for the *RIPPLE ROUNDUP* but today was a great day for us at the Riccarton Synthetic.

We’re incredibly proud of both of horses, but notably IFF I GET PAAID. Despite her usual slow start, she put in a gallant effort and bolted home to secure a brilliant second place 🥈🥈It was a close call, with the win slipping away by just a whisker and a slight bob of the head, but that's racing for you.

Watching her charge on the final straight (second to last on the outside - red cap for our newbies) was absolutely thrilling. She really gave it her all out there! She definitely deserves some extra carrots tomorrow and an extra long, massage session.

It's moments like these that remind us why we love this sport so much🐎

Enjoy watching her run with us

- Also congratulations to the connections of SPARTAN who took out the RIPPLE CREEK EQUINE - Innovation Race we proudly sponsored today in support of NZ Horse Ambulance Trust

Thoroughbred racing takes centre stage tomorrow (Wednesday) with a two pronged attack.

Race 3 - IFF I GET PAAID - Akshay Balloo
"Racing in fine form, shell be slow away and should storm home in her usual fashion. Increase in distance should negate her slow beginning"

Race 4 - HEADING TO NOOSA - Terry Moseley
"Much improved effort last time, still developing ringcraft. Hopefully hell be tucked in behind them and hitting the line strong again"

We are proud to support NZ Horse Ambulance Trust with the sponsorship of the $100,000 Ripple Creek Equine Polytrack Innovation race.

*RIPPLE ROUNDUP* 29th-4th August

Trent’s summary of the racing week 🐎

It was a quiet week on the racing front with only one runner on Sunday, after a busy few weeks.

ICEE STYXIE - 12th
“After a great first trial back after a a long spell, I had positive feelings for her race. I was so disappointed in her performance and frankly by the time I’d walked back with her to the stables I’d retired her in my head.

Luckily I’d had the foresight to have the on-course vet scope her before returning home. It revealed excess mucus and inflammation, certainly more than enough to hold her back and give her an opportunity to try again another day. Fingers crossed she bounces back quickly with some treatment and gets to try again. Starting to think Foreman Fox has given her one of his preschool plagues he likes to bring home to the family 😂”

Racing this week potentially: HEADING TO NOOSA, IFF I GET PAAID, MAJOR PERFORMER, DARBY.

04/08/2024

Foreman Fox would like to wish Daddy and Icee Styxie good luck today at 3.03pm in Race 5

He’s happy a with how she’s looking and looks forward to reviewing her run when he wakes from his lunch nap (being a foreman on a Sunday is tough work)

He’s gunning for lead trainer, but just building his stamina for the big race days currently.

Race 5 3.03pm - Icee Styxie

“An achievement in its self to get this mare back to the races, has trialed well in preparation but will hugely benefit from the run. Hopefully she can do her late owner Neil Rich proud”

It looks like we have another equestrian in the family, this one looks to have found a new discipline to enjoy however 🤣

“Jump, jump, jump”

We won’t tell him we’re trying to tire him out on a very wet and miserable day 😉

* RIPPLE ROUNDUP - 22nd - 28th JULY *

Trent’s honest thoughts to wrap-up this weeks racing.

We had a busy one, with 6 runners across both codes at Riccarton and Addington

*Gallopers*
HEADING TO NOOSA - 4th
“A much improved effort for 4th, a few more runs over this distance and he should be close to picking up a win. He lacks a bit of ringcraft and did a few thing wrong during the run, he should improve with more racing in the future”

IFF I GET PAAID - 3rd
“Another outstanding effort for 3rd, her closing sectionals were impressive and we were thrilled with her. She really wants 1600-1800m to counter her slow barrier speed, but we may keep her at 1400m for another start to target some more opportunities at good stakes”

WHOSDREAMINGNOW- 4th (Friday & 1st Sunday)
“Held up a tad Friday and ran the fastest last 200m. He backed up well Sunday with an impressive win, thanks to a quality drive by John Dunn. He’ll go for a spell now and come back stronger for some spring racing”

MAJOR PERFORMER - 7th
“You guessed it, unlucky again! Can’t fault her efforts she’ll have a wee freshen up and target Friday night racing”

DARBY - 8th
“A good effort after working hard early, she’s adjusting to the rise in class and will only continue to improve with more racing”

Potential runners this week: Icee Styxie. Stay Tuned!

RIPPLE ROUNDUP - 15th-21st JULY

Trent’s honest end of the week thoughts on the racing for the week.

We had 3 runners at Addington Sunday.

MAJOR PERFORMER - 4th
“Desperately unlucky again, returned to stables with her plugs still in after no gap in the finish. We’ve been thrilled with how she’s working - We’re hoping her luck will turn in the Winter Rewards Final this week 🤞🏻”

STUBING - 6th
“He was held up for most of the straight, but got out when it was all but over, but it was too late. Tim felt if he had got out earlier he would have run in the top 3.”

Darby - 8th
“Unluckily held up early in the straight. She had a few steering issues but hit the line well, I feel she’ll be away once she adapts to the step up in grade”

Potential runners this week: Icee Styxie (Trials), It’s Flash Harry (Trials), Darby, Major Performer, Heading To Noosa, Iff I Get Paaid, Whosdreamingnow . Stay Tuned!

RIPPLE ROUNDUP - Week 8th-14th JULY

Trent’s thoughts on another luckless week of racing but some highs and lows to cover off.
This week we had 6 runners across Riccarton Friday and Addington Sunday.

Did you know we have shares available in ready to run racehorses?! 🐎🐎🏇

HEADING TO NOOSA - 11th
“Caught 3 and 4 wide without cover the entire way, not his go second up. Big rise in distance coming and should be very competitive with it”

KAMILLA - 10th
“Trained super going into the day but when she arrived on-course her nerves took over and she got things wrong. A horse with ability a long spell and she’ll be one for the summer racing”

MOENUI MISS - 10th
“After an extended period in work and a couple tough runs she finally packed it in. She’s in good health but physically and mentally ready for a good spell. A horse that could have been sacked multiple times put her hand up to say she’ll win races over the summer”

MAJOR PERFORMER - 6th
“Another one that is low flying but just can’t get the gaps to go her way. Plugs and blinds not activated. I think this mare will continue to get better even into her next preparation. She could be a smokey for the middle grade mares races over the summer”

STUBING - 4th
“Another honest performance, still a work in progress but competitive each week in this grade”

WHOSDREAMINGNOW - 2nd
“Johnny put the handle bars down and we weren’t unlucky, just hits a wee flat patch between the 500-300m which is costing him momentum. He’ll get one very soon”

Potential runners this week: Icee Styxie (Trials), Darby, Major Performer, Stubing, Whosdreamingnow . Stay Tuned!

Last Sunday was Darby day for a great bunch of owners 🐴🐴🐴

Darby’s breakthrough win last Sunday was due reward for her loyal syndicate members. For most of them, it’s been an almost 18-month wait for success after first connecting with the now 4yo mare when she was an early 3yo looking very much ready to race. Then things didn’t go to plan.

Minor setbacks delayed Darby’s debut until spring 2023, and then she didn’t fire as expected in her first campaign. As a result the decision was made to give her a nice long spell on the hills. A chance for her to just ‘be a horse’ for a while and strengthen up with time.

Most, but not all members of the original Ripple Creek Darby Syndicate, positive in their outlooks for this well-bred mare and enjoying their wider association with the stable, stayed with Darby. Now they can reflect on a very nice maiden win and look ahead about what’s to come.

“It was very exciting for wee Darby to get a well-deserved win,” enthused syndicate member Sarah Rogers, “Great to see the hard work and dedication paying off. We love being in this ownership group.” Sarah was in fact drawn to taking a share as she had handled Darby in her Yearling Sales preparation when working in the industry.

In the meantime, the Alps Racing Syndicate, a small family group in Ashburton, became involved with the stable by purchasing shares in two of our 2024 yearlings. Wanting a ready-to-race interest while their new investments matured and with Darby again trialling well, they jumped at the opportunity to fill the small ownership gap that existed.

So then there were two syndicates racing the horse – 19 people in total, under lease from owner and trainer Trent Yesberg. Two syndicates with contrasting back stories regarding the mare. All equally deserving and rewarded, the result a big thrill for an enthusiastic bunch of people who have taken Darby to their hearts.

For Ripple Creek syndicate manager Brian Cross every syndicate win is a particularly satisfying outcome. “Unlike some stables, we can’t rely on big owners to bankroll the horses Trent and his team train,” says Brian. “So we’ve made syndication a big part of the Ripple Creek ownership strategy.”

Everyone running syndicates will know they have advantages and disadvantages to a racing business: low cost of entry to fill gaps in ownership and more clients on the books, offset by a lot more paperwork that needs to be managed. “Sure, it takes just as long to welcome a new owner at 5% as one at 95%, and then there’s what’s needed to put multiple owners together in a horse and keep them together. But there are real advantages looking beyond that”.

At Ripple Creek, Brian could point to numerous stable connections who have not taken long to go from one small syndicate share to multiple ownerships as new opportunities arise. “Not only can a good syndicate experience lead to further involvement, but more people involved means more friends and family coming along for the ride, and more ownership resulting from working the networks.” That has to be good for harness racing.

From a business perspective, it just means staying focussed on customer service. “We need to be nimble so we can respond to changes that arise, hand in hand with the critical need to be proactive identifying ways of doing things better.”

For Trent as well, Darby’s win brought great satisfaction. “I’ve always had faith in the mare’s ability,” he says. “She just needed time to grow into the racing role.” There was some relief in the stable as well after bit of a win drought. “A few have been knocking on the door for a while”. For Darby a little luck in the running was all she needed.

Darby’s first win was only a Sunday maiden, but what a win it was as she showed a real will to get there first. Weaving through the field from the back, Darby recorded quite stunning sectionals for the last 600, 400 and 200 metres to score convincingly under Ricky May’s urging.

All success to each and every one of the mare’s big group of followers as they look forward to her future progress with much anticipation.

This week we had 5 runners on Sunday at Addington with Trent’s thoughts below.

MOENUI MISS - 4th
“Tenacious effort after sitting parked from the mile, she’s really improved. CRAZY, (as she is known) is certainly no longer, and has developed into a lovely racehorse”

WHOSDREAMINGNOW - 7th
“Probably the unluckeiest maiden in the country. He’s going outstanding races and when the splits go his way he’ll be in the winner circle”

DARBY - 1st
“Outstanding sectionals to win from the back. She showed a clean pair of heels running her last 200m in 12.95 seconds to score convincingly!
Won’t be her last win”

STUBING - 3rd
“Bounced back to somewhere near his best.
His sectionals were good, still a few things to work on”

MAJOR PERFORMER - 3rd
“Held up until late into the straight, fastest 600M, 400m, 200m of the race. Will get one soon”

Potential runners this week: Heading To Noosa, Kamilla. Major Performer, Whosdreamingnow, Moenui Miss. Stay tuned!

DARBY salutes in fine fashion! On the back of a luckless 4th last week she showed a clean pair of heels running her last 200m in 12.95 seconds to score convincingly!

A mare with untapped potential and the breeding to suggest there will more wins just round the corner.

Congratulations to her loyal owners and Ricky for the superb drive!

We are thrilled with the way our thoroughbreds have been running! IFF I GET PAAID continues to go from strength to strength (featured running for a brilliant second 🥈) as she prepares for another tilt at the Pearl Series bonus on the 26th July.

Next week we line up HEADING TO NOOSA who ran superb fresh up last week.

Galloping action first up for the team this week, then over to Addington for the weekend.
