Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week

I mōhio rānei koe? Did you know? Hanging spleenwort is an Asplenium fern that perches on trees or tree ferns and has thin fronds that hang down like long human hair or ringlets - which is exactly what its Maori name, Makawe means.

The full name is, nga makawe o Raukatauri - ringlets of hair of the goddess of music.

We have been observing lots of kererū around the sanctuary lately particularly sightings of them feeding on leaves of lucerne, kōwhai, and broome. At this time of year kererū tend to graze on leaves with fruit being rare in the forest.

In some areas with great amounts of food available we have seen flocks of more than 25 feeding together, you can imagine the noise they make when they lift into the air.

The silvereye has a wide distribution throughout New Zealand. They can be found from sea level to above the tree line but they are not abundant in deep forest or open grassland.

Slightly smaller than a sparrow, the silvereye is olive-green with a ring of white feathers around the eye.

Males have slightly brighter plumage than females. They have a fine tapered bill and a brush tipped tongue like the tui and bellbird.

Silvereyes mainly eat insects, fruit and nectar.

The silvereye was first recorded in New Zealand in 1832 and since there is no evidence that it was artificially introduced, it is classified as a native species. Its Māori name, tauhou, means 'stranger' or more literally 'new arrival'.

• 𝗗𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 - it can do more harm than good, especially for native species.
• Avoid also human food, such as 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻, 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮, 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼, 𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱, 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗰𝗮𝗸𝗲, 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲. Birds are likely to become malnourished, and developing chicks can develop fatal abnormalities as a result of metabolic bone disease.
• 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗸 can’t be digested by birds and causes stomach upsets.
• 𝗞ā𝗸ā 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘅 – try parrot pellets instead.
• 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿. Never put out honey or honey water for birds. Birds love it – but so do bees so this practice can spread bee diseases.
• 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 are also a no-no – they can harden around a bird’s beak.
