Exploring different places & a bit of Training 🤗🐶

16/11/2023

Thursday was a mud adventure 🤭 with Barney, Ella, Harley & Scooter

15/11/2023

Today was a mixed bag 😆
We mostly did an on leash stroll with sniffing and training. But they also got a run around too 🤗

Girls were 👌 boys were 👎 🤣

13/11/2023

Mostly on leash and training today. That's what happens when you close your ears 🙉😆

Current rule: any dog who doesn't listen goes straight on lead. Depending how far away the dog wanders etc they get 3 chances at off leash again.

New rule: all dogs are on leash for at least the first 10 minutes of our walk until I feel comfortable that they are listening.

Feel like a bit of a meanie 🤣 but you gotta listen doggos 😆

No water today as one dog has an ear infection. Personalised adventures for you and your dog's needs 😉

12/11/2023

Today we trialled Max in an adventure. I use to have Max in doggie daycare a few years ago, not sure that he remembered me 😊

Fabulous end to the week 🤗

Chasing birds, chasing pinecones, chasing each other & swimming (the dogs not me 😆) with Ella, Harley & Yogi.

A big Happy Birthday to our friend Barney, who turns 2 today 😘

Not the best Adventure with a few behavioural issues from some of the crew who spent half the time on lead. Sorry Barney I hope you still enjoyed your day, despite some of your peers 😏

My heart it breaks a little today 💔 Unfortunately we said goodbye to my beautiful boy Smudge 😭 Old battler you just kept on going, now it's your time to rest.
You will furever be in my heart.

Thanks to the amazing team at Holistic Vets and in particular Dr. Tanya for being so kind and supportive.

Anyone who knows me knows my pets are my kids they are family, loved beyond words. And although I knew Smudge was going to leave us soon, it doesn't make it any easier. So please bear with me over the next few days while I grieve for my beloved boy.

05/11/2023

Today we trialled Murphy in an adventure. I use to have Murphy in doggie daycare a few years ago so it was so lovely to see him again 🤗

Both Ella and Murphy have issues with joints so this adventure was more of a slow stroll and sniff. My adventures are personalised for your dog's needs 🙂

Availability for large doggos who are based around Judea areas. Please contact me to discuss.

It's that time of the year again! Please keep your pets safe.

🎃 HALLOWEEN TUESDAY 31 OCTOBER 🎃

A friendly reminder as Halloween approaches us tomorrow to please consider your dog/s and their welfare.

Some dogs find this time incredibly stressful and can become anxious with strangers constantly coming to the door, the strange costumes and the loud voices.

Your home should be a safe haven for your dog, a place where he/she feels safe, secure and where he/she can relax without being annoyed. Remember YOU are your dogs advocate.

So here are some tips to help during this time:

🐶 Close all windows and curtains (from early on) to block out the noises and scary sights.

🐶 Also turn on the TV or radio to block out noises.

🐶 Use distractions, if needed, puzzle games, etc.

🐶 Attach this sign to your rubbish bin and put it at the very end of your driveway, to stop people even reaching your door. I have used this sign every year and have had no issues.

Looking for a carer for your dog? Here's some great advice

Looking for a carer for your dog? Here's some great advice

Trusting your dog to another person to walk or care for is a big deal. They are responsible for your dogs safety and well-being, and the consequences of getting things wrong can include injury, learning/practicing unwanted behaviours, legal implications for you if your dog does something while in their care, and in some cases, death. On the other hand, these outings can also be so positive in enriching your dogs life & supporting your own efforts when run well.

However, dog care is also an unregulated industry with minimal barriers to entry. With the increasing popularity of the pet industry and rising costs of living encouraging people to earn some extra cash, we are seeing more and more people jumping in with very little experience but excellent marketing skills. This has already led to some dangerous situations putting both the dogs & other members of the public at risk. As the dog owners, the onus falls on you to ask the questions and ensure whoever you’re trusting your dog to actually has the experience, handling skills and policies in place to keep your dog safe.

Here’s a few questions you should be asking. There are no “one size fits all” right answers, but they should be able to provide you with thoughtful answers that set everyone up for success and put your mind at ease.

❓ What is your experience with dogs outside of your own? Walking your personal family dog is not the same as an unfamiliar one.

❓ What education have you undertaken with dogs? Formal qualifications aren’t the be all and end all - making genuine effort to learn and understand dogs through a variety of sources is.

❓ What steps do you take on walks or in the daycare facility to keep my dog safe? This could include dog:handler ratios (knowing their personal limits which will vary), restrictions on challenges accepted (eg aggression), the use of leashes, training over time, awareness of hazards, plans in place to manage these hazards, structured walking vs free time, appropriate locations, pet first aid certification, safe transportation etc.

❗️ Also read social media and see what the vibe is there. Red flags could include stories about dogs being “crazy” or out of control, images of dogs off lead in known on leash areas, large packs of dogs being let loose in public dog parks to play with the public, videos of inappropriate canine interactions (eg bullying behaviour) etc.

Anywhere there are animals there are going to be things outside of our control, and accidents do happen even to the best handler. But the right carer for your dog will be doing everything in their power to minimise those risks and accidents, keep everyone safe and going home happy.

As the owner it’s up to you to do your homework to make sure that’s the case with any care provider you entrust your dogs safety to. If that means getting up an hour earlier to run the dog because the decent dog walkers in your area have a wait list, that’s better than losing your beloved dog due to someone else’s negligence.

I am not currently accepting new walking dogs as I focus on training and behaviour services, but am happy to offer recommendations for your area if I know someone suitable.

One of the most common mistakes that people make when trying to help fearful dogs is the tough-love style method of thinking “they need to get used to it!”

Usually this way of thinking leads to an owner exposing their dog to the thing that scares them over and over again, in the hope that the dog will figure out that it isn’t scary.

Dog trainers call this “flooding”, and it very rarely has the desired outcome. Just like suddenly throwing a bucket of spiders at an arachnophobe, forcing a dog into a situation that terrifies them is more likely to INCREASE their fear. An arachnophobe covered in an unexpected bucket-load of spiders will not be calmly rationalising the situation and realising that spiders aren’t scary – the overwhelming nature of the situation will place them into flight and fight mode, and it’s likely that they’ll walk away from the encounter with an even greater fear.

The same logic applies to dogs when they’re forced way beyond the threshold of what they’re comfortable with, like when a dog who is nervous about other dogs is forced into a busy dog park.

This method also has the added side effect of destroying the dog’s trust in the humans who forced them into the terrifying situation – just like how the arachnophobe would feel about the person that attacked them with spiders.

Instead of forcing a dog to face their fear, it is much more effective to gradually desensitise a dog to their triggers, moving carefully and slowly to create new, positive associations.

A great blog. Worth a read 👍

I feel like too many people want the ultimate social dog but is that really what your dog wants 🤷‍♀️

\We’ve talked often about how there seems to be an ‘ideal’ picture of the dogs we live alongside. One of those many factors, and what we hear a lot when someone is asked what they would like to...

Kylee’s Pet Services

Hello and thank you for visiting my page. I thought I would introduce myself and let you know a little bit more about the person behind the name ...

I grew up on a farm with a family cat but it wasn’t until later in life that I got my first and only dog. Having spent most of my working life in office admin and accounts work, I decided to take a leap and follow my passion which has always been to work with animals. With the large amount of pets particularly in Papamoa, I felt that there was a need for the services I offer and I wanted to make a difference within the community. My aim is to remain small so I can maintain those connections with each pet and client, be a unique service, to continue to learn and educate myself so I can continue to provide the best possible service to you and your pets.

Nutrition for cats and dogs and canine massage are also some other interests of mine. I have completed several courses through the years from small business management, to animal care, animal welfare investigations and most recently an advanced diploma in canine behaviour training.

My pets consist of a golden labrador Ella, who is 8 and a cat Smudge, who is 14.
