Team SPCA says ‘thank you’ for everything in 2024!
A small note to say a HUGE thank you... from the whole team here at SPCA 🐾💙
Your generosity this Christmas means more than we can say, but we did our best to put our gratitude into words...
The below video is a collective 'thank you' from all of us to you as we round out a year you helped make an amazing one for the animals.
Whether you fostered, adopted, volunteered, donated, advocated for change, engaged with our Education program, shopped in our SPCA Op Shops or donated your pre-loved goods, or simply shared our posts and stories... THANK YOU!
Flex's foster home 💙
Flex found the perfect foster family with Caity and her whānau, and had a ball hanging out with his foster siblings 🥹
Foster families can come in all shapes and sizes – if you have a safe space and love to give, we have animals who need both. Apply to foster at www.spca.nz/foster to change a life like Flex's 💙
Peach is looking for her forever home!
Peach was returned to our shelter through no fault of her own. She doesn't understand why she's been brought back – but she’s ready to find her people 💔
Peach is a real character who will fit right in as your new best friend. She has a taste for the finer things in life, like an extensive wardrobe of (adorable) jumpers, because she really feels the cold! She's made great progress with her separation anxiety, and we're looking for adopters who can continue to help her with that.
If you can find space in your heart for this affectionate, sweet girl, it's beyond time for her to find you. Get in touch with our Whakatāne Centre today if Peach steals your heart 🥹 https://www.spca.nz/adopt/animal/608922/dog-peach-whakatane
Mr. Agatha's story
This little cutie is Mr Agatha 💙 He was discovered all alone and clinging to life at a landfill before being rushed into our care.
Heartbreakingly, Mr Agatha is just one of the thousands of cats and kittens that we’ll meet over the coming months in need of our help.
We can’t do it alone. We depend on loving foster homes to open up their hearts and homes to help animals in need on a short-term basis. Everything you need to foster is provided by SPCA, and we can match you with an animal to suit your circumstances.
If you can sign up to help animals like Mr Agatha over the busy kitten season, please sign up at https://www.spca.nz/foster24.
How to prepare your pet for Guy Fawkes Day
Guy Fawkes Day is a stressful time for many pets. That’s why we’re collaborating with RNZ Concert to bring you our Concert for Animals – a night of relaxing, pet-friendly music on 5 November. Tune in from 6PM to midnight on RNZ Concert for some soothing tunes for furry friends! 🎶
We also asked our Scientific Officer Dr. Alison Vaughan for some tips ahead of the evening. Hear from her about other ways you can make your pet feel safe and comfortable – so the 5th of November is a night they don’t remember in the wrong way.
Inside the Inspectorate with Kim Crossman
Our Inspectorate is a key part of the SPCA ecosystem. Inspectors respond to allegations of animal cruelty and neglect, providing education to owners, mitigating unsafe conditions, and uplifting animals when necessary. Around New Zealand, Inspectors are ready and able to help improve animal welfare – but there are a lot of misconceptions about what they do, and the powers they have.
SPCA Ambassador Kim Crossman sat down with Inspector Amanda Davis after a ride-along to chat about the work of the Inspectorate, how New Zealanders can best help out when reporting welfare concerns, and the best (and hardest) parts of Amanda’s job.
Goldie's looking for a home 💙
Meet Goldie, our current longest-stay dog in New Zealand 💔 Though this poor boy has been waiting over a year for someone to take him home, we're hoping his adoption day is just around the corner.
Goldie came to us as a stray and has been looking for a home since September 2023. He's amazing on walks, great with other dogs, and loves spending time with humans. His favourite things are cuddles and walks, and he's the perfect candidate to bring more of both into your life.
If you have a home without young children or other pets, Goldie could be the one you've been waiting for 🥹 He's been with us for over 13 months, and it's beyond time for him to find his home.
And remember – if you adopt before 20 October, you'll save 25% on Goldie's adoption fees. Visit him on our site or get in touch with our Masterton Centre today! https://www.spca.nz/adopt/animal/586896/dog-allan-goldman-aka-goldie-masterton
The many sounds of Maddie!
This 15-year-old is just the sweetest lady – and she's looking for a home to spend her golden years in 🥹 If you could offer her a space to call her own (free of other pets or young kids), you'll get the most loving, affectionate companion in return. Snuggles, headbutts, and scintillating conversation are just a few of her favourite hobbies, and you'll get an unlimited amount of all three!
Like many senior pets, she has some particular health needs, but our care team will talk you through them. If you've never considered bringing an older animal home, it can be one of the best choices you ever make – they're so, so loving, and just waiting for a warm, safe place to settle into. Get in touch with our Māngere Centre team today if Maddie could be yours, and visit our site to learn more about her 💙 https://www.spca.nz/adopt/animal/346705/cat-maddie-auckland
If you remember Joey – a very sick little grey kitten whose plight we shared a few weeks back – you may like to see how he’s getting on now! 🥹
We’re so happy Joey got the fairytale ending he deserves. If you’d like to make a donation to ensure one of the other thousands of kittens we’ll meet this season gets the same chance at health and happiness, you can give easily over at www.spca.nz/joey 🙏
45 cutdown te wiki.mp4
It’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori! To commemorate the week, we’re re-introducing you to India and Toru, who are embarking on their te reo learning journey together 💙
India and her auntie Kaye have been prioritising teaching Toru his commands in te reo, as India learns to speak it herself. Toru has already mastered "haere mai," "taihoa," and "e noho" – and he's just getting started 🌟
Te reo is an important part of our lives in Aotearoa. Here at SPCA, we're proud to support Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Kia māhorahora te reo – let’s make it seen, let’s make it heard!

Sign the petition - Require imported animal products to meet NZ animal welfare standards
❗Trigger warning: disturbing images❗
While cruel practices like sow stalls and battery cages have been outlawed in New Zealand, did you know that our Government still allows imported animal products from these terrible farming systems? Though it’s hard to see footage like this, we believe it’s important for Kiwi consumers to know where some of the animal products they’re purchasing may come from.
SPCA supports the petition by Animal Policy International, which calls for an end to animal products being imported from conditions that would be illegal in New Zealand.
Our Chief Scientific Officer Dr Arnja Dale says, “there’s a clear disconnect between our laws and imports. Animals overseas are being kept in conditions that New Zealanders have already clearly rejected, and yet products from those conditions continue to be sold to New Zealand consumers.”

Another day of no adoption interest for these (fur) babies 💔
These animals have been waiting a long time to find their families, but their luck just hasn't turned. Could you give them the homes they're waiting for?
Meet them on our site: https://www.spca.nz/adopt
