Babesia gibsoni is a parasite that primarily affects dogs. It is widespread around the rest of the world. Infection with the parasite can cause disease known as babesiosis, of which most cases are without symptoms or mild, but can be severe in some dogs.
The parasite is spread between dogs where blood is exchanged – most commonly this is through tick bites or dogs biting one another.
The best way to protect your dog is by making sure they are up to date with their flea and tick control and avoid situations where dogs may exchange blood, such as fighting.
