The fur kids and I went along to dog club and trained *near* the other dogs. Joonie did SO well - starting off with Sassy with us as her anchor dog so she felt more comfortable and then just with me doing:
1. Heelwork
2. Sit
3. Down
4. Stays
I am veryhappy with how well she focused on me ! Clever puppy
How I sleep even though I was abandoned as a puppy knowing I'm safe, loved and cherished now

Joonie's first trip to lake Te Koutuu today. There were other dogs, people, little kids, ducks and pūkeko to distract her. It was a good test of her hamdler focus (all on lead cos she isnt 100% proofed yet) and she did really well.
Just a long puppy snoozing on the couch. Her DNA is getting "sequenced' as we speak so watch this space for where those long limbs come from!

Those of you with multiple dogs, can you tell which bark is which? Better yet, can you tell what their different barks mean? Sassy's particular set of barks include 'stranger danger', 'postie going past' 'postie stopping' 'courier in our driveway' 'courier in neighbour's driveway' and my all-time favourite which changes mid-bork 'thought it was a stranger but actually it's a friend'_
It's getting a bit chilly so Joon has her jumper on
My dogs on a log want to let you know we have some private lesson AND behavioural appointments available over the next few weekends... get in quick because these go fast...
This is a wonderful visual...
Here mumma, I brought you a leaf... ❤️

Out Now!
New and improved Puppy classes. These classes are aimed at puppies that have already done AT LEAST a puppy kindergarten at the vets or ideally a 1-1 course with me or another trainer. But all ages (as long as they are fully vaccinated) will be catered for in a small class.
Four weeks course, covering
* reliable recalls
* comfortable lead walking,
* waits and stays
* watch me
* outlets for breed specific behaviours,
Classes are 35-45 minutes held in Leamington, Cambridge on Sunday afternoons starting 26 May 2024 (subject to enough enrolments). $200
This. Always this.
🐇🐾 "Hi my name is Dora & i'm a rabbit addict"🐾🐇
"If i get the chance to be unsupervised i'd love to guard the yard, alert everyone to my presence, roll in some well dead things (the stinkier, the better), chase rabbits, hares & probably the neighbours cats around the farm, & find some mice to bring home. But alas, these only happen in my dreams because i'm not allowed to free roam on my own". Now Dora is a very well trained, great dog. But....she's still a dog who would love to just do dog things.
🙃 2 of the most common things we get asked & pushed back on are -
⭐ "How do i stop my dog doing X when i'm busy or not around?
⭐ "Oh but i don't want to tie my dog up, crate, kennel, contain".
🙌 Management is an essential part of having a well behaved dog, along with training. You cannot be there all the time & sometimes you just need to get things done without tripping over the dog. Introducing some simple management options into your home environment, will make your relationship with your dog better. Limiting the ability to practice bad behavior can help strengthen your training. Limiting the ability to have access to things that are dangerous will help your dog live longer. Limiting the amount you yell at your dog will make you both happier.
⭐ Crate training.
⭐ Tethering for short periods when guests enter your property.
⭐ Tethering for short periods when practicing duration behaviors.
⭐ Kennel in a decent sized run during the day while you're out.
⭐ Contain when unsupervised in general.
🤔😁Instead of "not wanting to do X" maybe just try it.
I gave Joonie her first bath since she came to live with us. We had to wait for the dog wash to be free, so before our turn we had plenty of time for some desensitisation and slow, happy introductions to the noises. She met a lovely friendly Boxer also waiting and had a nice greeting and would have played if off lead.
In true dog trainer "pushing it" fashion we then waited near the dog park entrance for some more dogs to arrive or walk past so Joon can get treats which = happy positive experiences and continue to improve her feelings around steange dogs.
We were aiming for Joonie to be neutral around other dogs but now we have done a few sessions of this I'm now thinking we may be able to end up dog social which would be awesome for our future dog sport career!
May I take your order? Puppy cuteness coming right up!
Two paws is cute, but not quite correct, sorry Joonie!
I am very happy with Joon's progress in our station behaviour.
We are adding distractions to proof it, and food - especially kibble - is Joon's biggest distraction. We built this up from one piece of food placed on the floor (and rewarding for staying on the bed) thru to being able to drop 3 (or was it 4!?) Treats and have them bounce near her while she stayed on the bed. This is next level. Clever pup
You asked and we have (finally!) answered. Puppy classes are coming soon.
These classes are specifically aimed at younger puppies who have done at least one package of private lessons with me (or another class elsewhere – upon assessment). We will be delving into furthering your pup’s education, building up those behaviours already taught with distractions in a new environment so you can be sure they will comply first time, and improving your dog’s exposure to all the things, people, scents, sounds and yes, other dogs that they need to be appropriately socialised.
Classes will be held in Leamington on Sunday afternoons.
Please PM now if you would like to book a space in this class (spaces very limited).
When you finally meet your Nana and it turns to mutual love when you learn to snuggle and not jump!
Did you know we do puppy training one on one with just you and your dog?
Benefits of private lessons for new and young puppies:
* Training first in a low distraction environment so you and your dog can learn and bond quicker
* Tailored information just for you and your dog
* Basic manners training (loose lead walk, recalls and self-control!)
* Tailored management (equipment, crates etc) and home set ups
*Toilet training advice specifically for your home
* Answers to questions you didn’t know you had.
For all puppies 12-30 weeks old. Held at your place or mine. $250 for our four lesson package.
Baby dog vibes...
This is Juniper Kahurangi McPup. She joined the McPup family last weekend. We think she is a Aussie Cattlle dog cross, but we are just guessing as she was found dumped with her two brothers up North. Stay tuned for puppy spam and new foundation training videos coming soon!

Coming soon... Trainer-led puppy playdates!
We will be offering two kinds of playdates
1. Weekends from 10th February (times TBA) book a time and bring your puppy to meet and play with other pups and stay with them to watch and learn about appropriate puppy play and other kinds of socialisation.
2. Mondays (starting 12 February) book an hour timeslot and drop and go. Puppies will be introduced and supervised by me and you can them pick them up after an hour, happy and mentally enriched.

Day five of changing our English cues to Te Reo Māori cues for #tewikiotereomāori Today's word is homai - give. I might have also said "Homai te taonga tākaro" - "give me the toy", but that's a bit long for a dog! #kiakahatereomāori
Day four of changing a cue from English to Te Reo Māori... hopu -- catch! #kiakahatereomāori #tewikiotereomāori
Day three of changing our verbal cues from English to Māori for Te Wiki i Te Reo Māori. This one is 'hup' to ki runga - literally "get on it". I also use a hand signal for this so Sassy picked it up super quick
Day two of changing my verbal cues from English to Māori To change cues, just use this formula: New cue -- old cue -- behaviour -- mark -- treat
Kia ora, it's Te Wiki o Reo Māori this week, so I'm changing some of our cues to Reo Māori to give it a go. Forgive my probably grammatical errors, I'm still learning the sentence structure #tewikiotereomāori tewiki #kiakahatereomāori

Do you have a go-to behaviour for when you meet other dogs or people on walks? We use a nose touch to turn Sassy back towards me and this was a practice we did today.

Do you want to #domorewithyourdog ? This is all of my foster dog's first tricks toward becoming a novice trick dog. With enough interest we could entice a Do More With Your dog instructor to come and hold a workshop this Thursday night in Leamington. PM the page to show your interest ASAP!
This dog is so smart. I haven't taught her to do this, nor has she seen another dog or cat do it. But she figured out pushing the button makes the door open! She pushed it a couple seconds before this, i went over to open the door and she thought she was going to get in trouble but I opened the door. She didn't seem like she wanted to go out. So i went back to my computer and she went back to the button so I filmed it. Boom! #clever #rescuedogsofinstagram #fosterdog #trickdog #domorewithyourdogs
The first 10 tricks for my foster dog's novice trick dog certificate. All taught in five days #foster #domorewithyourdogs #clickwithcanines #clickertraining #day5 #settlingin #notreadyforadoption #pocketrocket
