well. Becoming a wildlife wise dog owner helps to keep our wildlife, and your furry friends, safe on the beach. This programme educates Dunedin dog owners on how to be better prepared for interacting with our spectacular coastal wildlife. Lead the Way teaches you that it’s easy to be prepared as there is space for each, all we have to do is share the beach! Take the quiz to become wildlife wise and you’ll gain access to the exclusive Traffic Light Bandana Lead the Way leads. Using this lead lets your fellow dog walkers know whether your pup is friendly (green), cautious with interaction (orange) or would prefer to keep to themselves (red); There is even an option for your blind or deaf dogs (yellow). With each lead purchased you will also be donating to Dunedin’s Wildlife Hospital to help wildlife that are injured or distressed. How Can I Get Involved?

We've wound back the clocks which means spring is well and truly here! 🌱☀

While its a great time for you and your pup to head out and enjoy an extra hour of sun in the evening, its also the time when many of our feathered friends are nesting.

Did you know, one of our more common seabirds is in decline? Tarāpunga (or Red-Billed Gull) have an expected population decline of 50-70% over the 3 generations.

You can do your bit to help them out by making sure your dogs stay away from gulls at the beach, and keep them on a lead around wildlife.

Give your Welly friends a shout!

As you might have seen from our post a few weeks back Leopard seals are out and about around our coasts!

Remind them to bring their lead when they're out and about and keep at least 20m away from wildlife 🐾

As you've likely heard, a leopard seal has been hanging out on Lyall Bay beach today near the dog exercise area.

While they may look cute and cuddly, they can be very dangerous so please keep your distance and ensure your dogs are on a leash.

Thanks to Bradley Garner Creative for the photo!

Would you let your pup play with a leopard?

While we don’t have big cats on our shores, did you know that leopard seals often visit New Zealand in winter?

Pictured here, they have a long, slim body, a large head and characteristic grey spots. Female leopard seals can even weigh up to half a tonne! This leopard seal was seen at Waikouaiti last week. Be sure to keep an eye out, especially through winter 👀

Have you spotted one yet? Leopard seals need rest when they come to shore, and they don’t find meeting your pup very relaxing! If you spot one, or other wildlife on your walks make sure you keep well away and recall your pup to put on their lead.
