As we commemorate Anzac Day, let's also remember the countless animals who have served alongside our troops throughout history. ๐ถ๐๐ฆ
From Ceasar the bulldog, the first New Zealand animal awarded the Blue Cross medal for his bravery during WWI, to the thousands of horses like Bess who endured harsh conditions on the front lines, these animals have played a crucial role in our military efforts. During the wars, dogs, pigeons, and other animals served as messengers, helped locate wounded soldiers, and provided comfort as mascots. The bond between service personnel and their animal companions was a source of strength in difficult times.
Today, we continue to recognize their contributions. The New Zealand War Animal Memorial in Waiลuru honors their service, and the purple poppy is a symbol of remembrance for these brave creatures.
On this Anzac Day, let's pause to remember not only the men and women who have served, but also the animals who stood by their side. ๐๐บ
