🐾 Introducing Schroeder 🐾

Schroeder is a Polish Lowland Sheepdog who’s already got a fantastic foundation in his life skills thanks to the hard work of his handler. His focus, engagement, and ability to work through day-to-day situations are a real credit to the consistency they’ve built together.

One of Schroeder’s main challenges is on-leash reactivity, more specifically, frustration when he sees other dogs. This is a classic case of a “frustrated greeter”: he wants to interact, but the leash restriction can create tension and big feelings.

The good news, he’s coming into this next stage of training with all the right building blocks already in place.
Our focus will now shift toward:
✔️ Lowering his arousal around triggers
✔️ Using pattern games and predictable routines to keep him under threshold
✔️ Reinforcing calm choices and default focus back to handler
✔️ Expanding his skill set for real-life, higher distraction environments

With such a strong partnership already established, Schroeder and his handler are well set up to move from solid foundations into more advanced reliability. It’s always a pleasure to work with a team that has already put in the groundwork, now it’s just about fine-tuning and levelling up!

✨Archie✨

When I first met Archie, sitting on cue was a rare event and his impulse control — especially around social interactions was… let’s just say a work in progress.

Over the past 6 sessions in our Life Skills Program, Archie and his owner have put in the work, building a toolbox of cues and manners to help him navigate everyday life with more focus and calm.

Today, in his final session, we took it up a notch working on off-leash reliability skills! 🐾 Watching him respond, think, and make great choices was such a proud moment.

His owner’s dedication has been the key to this progress, and while there are still more skills to fine-tune, Archie is well on his way to being the polite, reliable companion we know he can be.

👏 Well done team Archie — you’ve come so far!

✨HOAGIE✨
Puppy Development Program: Session 3
Hoagie has just turned 16 weeks and we are starting to see that pre teen behaviour, time to dig deep with those already taught foundations and be consistent.

Today’s session we introduced recall, off lead reliability foundations, LLW & more on engagement.

✨Pet Gundog/Life Skills Class :Week 4✨
This week we worked on:

✅ Impulse control around distractions
✅ Recalls under pressure (because coming back is hard when fun things are happening!)
✅ Progressing our place/send-to-target work
✅ Building handler focus in busy environments
✅ Emergency Stop foundations

It’s easier to train in your backyard the real skill comes when your dog can still think in the chaos.
This week was all about helping your dog choose you when the world gets interesting.

Keep working between classes — foundations pay off.

Some of our team will back for our August class strengthening their skills.

✨Ace✨
Leaving the house with a reactive adolescent dog starts before you even open the door.

It’s a deep breath. Calm handling. Lead on without a fuss. A pause at the threshold, letting them settle before stepping out. Not rushing, not hyping it up.

Because how you leave the house sets the tone for the whole walk.

Some days it goes smooth. Other days, one bark and it all kicks off. But showing up calmly, consistently, that’s where progress lives.

You’re not just walking your dog. You’re building their confidence, and your own.

✨PET GUNDOG/LIFESKILLS CLASS: Week 3✨
This week, we worked on loose lead walking in real life. We walked past dogs, people, and other distractions on the footpath, focusing on keeping a calm, consistent connection with our dogs.

We also took our send-out and retrieve work a step further, using dummies to build more confidence and clarity in the task. It’s not perfect (and it doesn’t need to be), but progress is what we’re after.

✨Athos✨
Athos' dad consistently puts in the work. He’s set clear goals for Athos’ future, and the progress they make each week is a testament to his commitment. That said, life sometimes gets in the way, work commitments, unpredictable weather, family obligations, it happens to all of us.

This week, Athos was quite hyper during his session. He was easily distracted and found it hard to settle and focus.

Let’s unpack this a little, just like we did during the session. Athos is now 17 weeks old. Welcome to the pre-teen puppy phase! This is often when some adolescent behaviours begin to emerge, and you might find yourself wondering, “Where did all my hard work go?” But rest assured, those foundations are still there. Now’s the time to dig deep and stay consistent.

Athos’ dad also mentioned that training was more difficult this week due to time pressures and poor weather. So, what we saw in the session was very likely a combination of natural puppy development and a lighter training week. Totally normal and expected!

In our session, we focused on helping Athos re-centre and build back his focus through calm, structured activities. We shortened our training bursts, used more frequent breaks, and adjusted the environment to reduce overwhelm. We leaned into pattern-building games and reinforced basic cues he already knows well to bring some wins back into the mix. By the end of the session, we saw some lovely moments of calm focus shining through, proof that the foundations are there, just waiting to be tapped back into.

Sometimes getting photos for content is difficult, like a cute puppy working in a session.

So here is a sequence of photos of ✨Hoagie✨ learning a down position, and how focused he was in earning his reward.

And as we know, dog training is not entirely glamorous, and I like to keep it real, because you're either coaching, showing, or watching your clients.
