VetSouth

VetSouth Working with you for happy, healthy & productive animals in the south. This shouldn’t be compromised by geography. Our services need to reflect this.

VetSouth services the whole Southern province with clinics in Gore, Winton, Invercargill, Balclutha, Tapanui, Clydevale, Lumsden and Otautau for all your rural animal and companion animal veterinary needs. VetSouth was born out of the belief that being rural and far away shouldn’t compromise the quality of veterinary services that we are able to provide. Southland farmers have progressive and comp

lex businesses and deserve the best advice and services available. And pet owners feel the same attachment to their pets as in big cities. To make this a reality we have to recruit excellent people, from wherever they are. And so we have an eclectic mix of vets from across New Zealand and the world. These bring a superb and broad skill set to VetSouth. In addition, we believe in working with as many organisations as possible to maximise the breadth of services and offering that we can bring to our clients. And we will continue to innovate- whether it be in developing tech services or novel cost effective dairy packages or broader companion animal services. VetSouth brings you a quality of service and information that is recognised worldwide as being truly first class.

We see a lot of cancer eye (otherwise known as squamous cell carcinoma). As the name suggests, it's a cancer of the eye, which can affect the eyelids, eyeball or 'third eyelid' (the eyelid that slides across the eye) and it is as bad as it sounds. Vet Sunni explains more.

Like most types of cancer, early detection leads to better outcomes.

Weaning your beefies soon? While you’ve got the girls in the yards, it’s worthwhile checking they are all fit enough to make it through another winter.

Southland’s soft, wet pastures can spell trouble for your cow’s feet, so check for any overgrown hooves, or signs of lameness. It’s also a good idea to scan over their eyes for early signs of pink eye or cancer eye (particularly in white-faced animals). As with most conditions, early detection leads to better outcomes!

Are you planning to lamb early or late this year (or just bang in the middle)? Whenever you are putting your rams out, remember to regularly check them for any signs of injury and to make sure they have enough grass. They will be working pretty hard, so it pays to keep them sustained!

This year, vet Christine took a look at the reproductive performance of some of our technology-using farms that gave us access to their data and compared this back to their cycling rates pre-mating.

Are cow wearables helping our reproductive season in our herds?

https://ow.ly/bjes50R2Nmv

Let's look at the influence of pre-mating heat detection on reproductive performance.

This was a fun event to be a part of! Looking to keep those endorphins pumping? We have The VetSouth Gorge Adventure Race coming up soon 👀

We held our 3rd trail run event on Sunday, 18 February 2024, and what a day out it was!

All funds raised from this event go to Lochiel School PTA to help support resources to promote healthy bodies and healthy minds in our community as well as giving a contribution to the great work done by The Forest Hill Trust.

We had over 180 runners and walkers take to our 5km, 15km and 25km tracks held within the magnificent Forest Hill Reserve and adjoining private farmland.

The Forest Hill Trail Run Team would love to thank everyone who made the day a success from our entrants, their supporters and all of our supporters!

AB Lime for helping us every year, we are so lucky to have your support!
VetSouth for cooling everyone down with an ice block at the finishline.
Westpac for supplying the BBQ food.
R-Line Electrolyte Drink for supplying the hydration for everyone to enjoy and energized.
NRG Winton for pumping us up at the start.
Selector Uniforms for sponsoring and creating our awesomer merchandise.
Vital signs for making us a massive roadside sign to promote the run!
Flowers and The Girl for making beautiful bouquets for our winners.
numnutaudio for always entertainment us and making it a great environment!
csdesignz for creating our amazing medals.
Eventplus for helping us creat our booking system.

We are also grateful to the Department of Conservation for maintaining the reserve and last but not least our farm owners who let us enjoy their slice of heaven!!

Until next time,
Forest Hill Trail Run Crew
