Meet Valda 🐾

Valda is a 5-month-old Staffy puppy. Valda and her two siblings like to cause chaos by chewing and eating things. Recently this habit got her into a spot of bother!

Her owners called the team at Vetlife Temuka when they found Valda was refusing to eat, lethargic and vomiting. They instantly suspected she had eaten something she shouldn’t have. Our veterinarian Ciara examined Valda and recommended x-rays.

Upon x-raying tea team identified an object that looked like it shouldn’t be there! Surgery was recommended and Valda’s owners chose this option.

During surgery a piece of a dog toy was found and removed. Valda was kept in overnight on fluids to help rehydrate her. She was looking much brighter the next morning and happily ate the breakfast she was offered. She is continuing to do well at home and has been happy to come in and say hello to the team for her rechecks.

Thank you to her owners for allowing us to share her story.

All went well and she went home a happy cat. 🐱

With the feline population in New Zealand at such a high number getting your pet neutered or spayed is responsible cat ownership.

Meet Yurra 🐾

Recently a very pregnant Yurra was brought into Vetlife Temuka. Her owner brought her in as she had been showing signs of imminent labor the evening before. In the morning, Yurra had still not delivered any puppies. She was unsettled and panting, along with this the owner noticed a green discharge. Green discharge without a puppy can mean that the puppies are in distress (blood and oxygen supply are failing). This can be a life-threatening situation for both the pregnant female and unborn pups and help from a veterinarian should be sought swiftly.

On arrival at the clinic Yurra was examined by veterinarian Ciara and given an ultrasound. The ultrasound results showed live puppies, but as their heart rates were slower than expected a cesarean was recommended. The owners elected to have the cesarean, at this point it was all hands-on deck to help with the surgery and delivery of puppies.

Nine healthy puppies were delivered by Veterinarian Emily and Ciara. They were kept safe and warm while Yurra woke up from her surgery, and all went home later that afternoon. The Vetlife Temuka team are looking forward to seeing the puppies back for their first vaccinations in a few weeks time.

Thank you to Yurra’s owners for letting us share her story. 🐾

This handsome boy, Judd, came to visit us at Vetlife Timaru recently for a castration.
As well as preventing unwanted litters, castrating your dog eliminates the risk of testicular tumors and may help prevent prostate problems.
Judd was such a good boy and made sure to give everyone plenty of cuddles and love before heading home for some rest while he recovers from his surgery.
If you are interested in booking your pet in to be neutered, contact our friendly team at your local Vetlife clinic. 🐾

HYDROTHERAPY 💦

After young Chester damaged his shoulder, hydrotherapy has been a game changer for his recovery.

This is what his owner, Marge, shared about the hydrotherapy sessions he has been doing in Vetlife Wanaka ⬇️

"Hydrotherapy with Kate has been a game changer for my young dog Chester.

Chester damaged his shoulder and would have required surgery if not for the excellent therapy provided.

Kate was kind and gentle with Chester. He started out only able to do 5 minutes with a rest every minute or so. He is now able to do upwards of 45 minutes, 1500 metres. The muscles around his shoulder developed quickly with sessions initially twice a week, moving through to now once a fortnight. But best of all, out in the real world that has translated from Chester only being able to walk slowly on the flat around the block for 5 minutes to now walking for an hour uphill and down.

Better still he now gets to run with his sister Tilley. A Happy, Happy dog. So, would I recommend Hydrotherapy with Kate? Absolutely! "

Winter Enrichment 🏔️

Winter days don’t always look like this so here are a few tips on how to keep your pups fulfilled throughout the winter months.

🐾 Hide and seek. Use a ‘stay’ command and then call them to find you or a toy. This will also provide cognitive enrichment.
🐾 Lick mats. Licking is calming for dogs so this will act as a natural stress reliever – it also keeps them entertained for a while and they get a tasty treat out of it!
🐾 Tug of war. A good old game with your dog will have them interacting with you and keep them physically and mentally enriched.

What else do you do that keeps your pets engaged over the winter months? Let us know in the comments ⬇️

A fantastic story of reunion and an example of the huge benefit of microchipping and registering your pets with NZCAR.

Jack had been missing for almost a month. His owner Mark was really hoping he would wander back home but it was a call from Vetlife Murrays that lead to Jack and his family being reunited. Jack had been brought into the clinic by a member of the public, who had found him with a severe case of cat flu. Vetlife Murrays were able to treat the cat flu and scan his microchip, look him up on the NZ Companion Animal Register and from there contacted Jacks family. 🐾

Remember for microchipping to be effective you also need to register your animal with NZCAR.

🐾 Meet Bruce 🐾

Bruce is an 8-month-old Huntaway who came into after his owner noticed a clinking noise like rocks rattling whenever he would run. He was examined in clinic and admitted for x-rays as there was an obvious rattling noise coming from him.

Lateral radiographs showed six large stones in his stomach, one medium stone in the re**um, which was removed, and a smaller stone in the descending colon. Bruce was taken for an ex-lap to remove the rocks, and he also had a gastropexy at the same time as some littermates who had already had GDV. 6 large rocks were removed during surgery!

His B12/folate levels were also checked as any dogs that swallow large amounts of foreign bodies should be suspected as having IBD (irritable bowel disorder). B12/folate was highly suggestive of this and he is now on a hydrolysed diet and vitamin B supplementation.

Bruce is recovering well from surgery and since starting treatment, seems disinterested in rocks!

World Zoonoses Day 🌏🧫
Zoonoses are diseases passed from animals to humans, due to bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Safe habits like vaccinating pets, regular parasiticide treatments, and practicing good hygiene can reduce your risk.
