New Zealand Pug Rescue We provide educational breed information and co-ordinate Pug Rescue/re-housing New Zealand wide. I'm not getting any younger.
(21)

The Wellington Pug Dog Club established a policy in 1999, for the rescue and re-homing of Pugs. At this time a Health and Welfare fund was set up to help cover costs involved with taking care of these dogs. With the increasing popularity of the breed came the concern of more indiscriminate back yard breeding & puppy farming, Pugs being purchased on impulse by people who were not fully aware of wha

t Pug ownership can involve, or the potential costly health issues, hence the possibility of more Pugs needing help. In 2022 the Wellington Pug Dog Club changed direction to focus on shows and our breed rescue now operates independently. We rely solely on donations and various fundraising events, including Hug A Pug for our funding

Now in 2024, 25 years after we first officially started, I have been forced to alter how our rescue service is run. Maintaining enough funds has become very difficult and our HQ is going to be forced to shift at some stage in the next year or so. Finding a suitable home that's fit for purpose will be a huge challenge without winning lotto. I will continue to do my best to help new Pugs into suitable homes but, sadly, no longer can I take in seniors and or Pugs with health issues. I will continue to care for the seniors already in residence and very much hope for ongoing support to help with costs of vet care, quality food and health supplements. Top of our wish list are donations to help with vet costs, food and health supplements. Please email [email protected] if you would like to know how you can help. Donations can also be made via our Givealittle page. For anyone thinking of adding a Pug to their family please visit our website for some great information on the breed. Pugs are still very popular and for good reason. However owning a Pug isn't for everyone. These little dogs need a lot of human company and attention, a safe and secure environment, good food and attention to weight control, (a fresh/raw food diet is recommended over highly processed kibble),and owners who are prepared for any high vet bills which may arise. Pugs are 100% house dogs, quirky, unreliable, entertaining, shed a lot of hair. There are still a lot of breeders failing to carry out basic health testing so education is the best tool to have. (A breeder who is a member of Dogs NZ, and registers their puppies, should be first place to go. In order to be able to register their puppies they are required to undertake some basic health tests on Pugs being bred with. They are also bound by a Code of Conduct.) If you know of a Pug in need of our help, or would like to offer a home to a Pug who may need a new sofa to crash on, please don't hesitate to get in touch. [email protected]

If you have any questions about any aspect of what we do, then please email and ask.

Edit 17/8/24. Thanks everyone, but we are not taking any more inquiries for this boy at this time. If things change I will adjust the post to reflect that.

We are looking for a very special home for this much loved boy. He isn't going to suit most homes but we do hope there is one who has compassion and loves a challenge.

He will be 2 years old in December, is neutered and is microchipped. Located in the Canterbury area.
Now we get to the challenge part. This from his owner:
"He is incredibly intelligent and picks up tricks very quickly, however this also means he requires lots of mental stimulation. Pre pregnancy he was great, but post pregnancy he has become very reactive. He will start barking if I get off the couch, if baby makes a noise, if I breathe too loud, or various other reasons.
He is now always walked on a harness, under control, as he is highly reactive and will bark/lunge at any people or dog he sees. He cannot be patted by anyone outside of the house.
If we go to the dog park he barks and acts aggressive for around 5 minutes and then settles, however he does not like dogs coming up behind him. He does not like rubbish trucks or vehicles that make a lot of noise."

His owner believes he needs an active home, regular daily exercise, without children, where he can have someone's undivided attention.

So please read carefully, think with your head as well as your heart, and if you feel you have just the home then please email [email protected] (not DM our page).
I will send you one of our adoption application questionnaires.
Usual criteria applies. Own the home you live in, very secure property without access to an open gate/road, someone at home most of the time.

Thanks so much for the wonderful response we've had. Some great homes have been offered so we are not taking any more inquiries now.

These two gorgeous boys are in need of a wonderful new home. They are in Nelson.
I shared them in another post recently to see if we could find some part time care for them. Their owner has very reluctantly decided the best thing for the boys is to have the stability of a loving new home. They are a bonded pair, not to be separated. Approx 6 years old.
Both are neutered and microchipped. Crate trained, have lived with cats. Used to respectful children.
Usual conditions, own the home you live in, someone home for much of the time, excellent fencing and secure gates. A home check will be done.
If interested then please email [email protected] and I will send you one of our adoption application forms.

I've been meaning to share these photos for a while and finally doing it.
A wonderful group of people, lead by Merle and Johanna, who recently gathered together to help mark 25 years of our Pug rescue.
It was all done without my knowledge, thought I was going out for lunch with Merle and Gail. Little did I know how well they had set me up.
We had a great time. It was lovely to mark the milestone with a group of special people who have been part of the journey with me.

Off topic but Kato advises his eye ulcer is improving. We saw Dr Julene yesterday and really pleased to receive the good news. I'm to keep up with the constant round of eye drops, but surgery is now hopefully avoided.

Kato has started to play with toys today. He really is the loveliest boy. Cuddly, easy going. His lack of toilet manners his only wee vice. Not his fault when he lived outside and didn't know any better.
He went back to the vet last Wednesday and unfortunately his eye ulcer still not healing. It's quite deep so more of a challenge to treat. Kato heads back to see another of the vet team this Wednesday for a further check and hopefully they will come up with a plan for his eye. I've been told it will probably involve surgery. Not what we need but if it has to happen, it has to happen. Meanwhile he's a very happy chap and wishes to thank everyone for their kindness and generosity in donating towards his care and our registration fees.
His little pal, Raine, is still in quarantine. Not yet fully finished her heat.

It's been another busy, and costly week.
Monday saw new boy, Kato, into the vet for neuter. What should have been straight forward wasn't. Well the neuter was, but the vet discovered he has a nasty eye ulcer and ye**ty ears. He came home with medications and drops for eyes and ears. Some of those eye drops are like gold in a bottle, given the cost. But needs must. A checkup on Friday at least told us the ulcer hadn't got worse and his ears were now looking good. Kato has also put on some weight. He requires a dental but needs to gain more weight before that happens.

Tuesday it was another early start with dear old Vegas (in blue jacket) off to the vet to have surgery to remove 2 lumps. Surgery went well, the sites are healing well and we await results of what the lumps are. Vegas, who is approaching her 13th birthday, says she is a tough wee girl and bounced back really quickly.

Little Raine has also gained some weight and her skin is healing well. The hot spots and awful scabs are clearing up nicely. She has an already healing eye ulcer. Easy to spot in the pic of her in jail. Still in season but happy in her cosy bed where she can see all the activity.

The 2 black boys in the 4th photo are based in Nelson. Their owner contacted me asking for some help following a change in their situation. The boys are missing out on human company and attention. We are either looking for an awesome home for them or some Puggy experienced person who might be able to visit on a regular basis, take them for a walk, or just provide them with some company and interaction.
If you think you can help then please email me at [email protected]

Our annual registration fees have risen to $73 per dog this year. If anyone would like to sponsor the registrations for Vegas, Kato, Raine, or any of our other residents (Banjo, Franklin, Heidi, DeeDee and Peanut) we would be most grateful. Account: Pug Rescue 03 0683 0196662 01

A little update from Louie.
His meet and greet on Sunday went well so he left the building to have a trial run in what we hope is his new forever home. So far so good. He is recovering really well from his dental surgery and receiving lots of TLC from his new Mum and Dad.
I thought you might like to see him with his new Pug sister, a toy he has selected and already carries around, plus a rather cute pic Nurse Catherine sent of him sleeping things off post op.

A huge thank you again to everyone who has supported Louie and our other Pugs. Your generosity is amazing.
Jackson and Wal, I haven't any words but thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Our pair of malnourished Pugs are doing well. Happy and settled, eating good quantities of quality food. The little girl has tossed me a bit of a curve ball though. She has come in season. Oh joy, NOT.

It's been a long day after a busy week.
Not only did we have the issue of taking this new pair in I was also working on getting another pair a safe place to go.
Big Louie had his date with the dentist so an early start. 14 teeth out, scale and polish. He has been on the armchair sleeping it off ever since I carried him in.
His pre op weigh in has him at 9.55kg. So much healthier than the 11.7kg he weighed when he first arrived. Other great news is Louie has a meet and greet on Sunday. Hopefully has a new armchair to crash on at ex rescue girl Ozzie's home. Fingers and paws crossed.

Our 2 new entrants arrived yesterday afternoon, settled in quickly.
I took them for a vet check this afternoon. From the last recorded weights in their vaccination booklets both have had dramatic weight loss in a 3 month period. Because the little girl is so thin I had her blood tested and pleased all came back as normal. Her skin along her spine is scabby with hair loss. Suspected flea allergy. A few soothing baths should help.
It would appear she has had more than one litter of puppies.
Along with neuter and spay, both are going to need their teeth attended to. Right now it's about some good food and fresh country air. They are clearly tuckered out after their outing.

(The second pair will also be in need of neuter and spay. Her after a bit of weight loss.)

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated towards their care. It's a challenge at times keeping up with vet costs and that of good food. (Little change today out of $2k)

Add to that it's the time of year when annual registrations are due, so some added pressure, and hopefully some of you will be kind enough to sponsor a Pug again this year.

I'll let you know how Louies meet and greet goes and keep you updated from time to time on the progress of the others.

Have a great weekend, and thank you again for all the support.

A bit of an urgent plea for transport help for these 2 Pugs. Surrendered to us today, they are currently in the Auckland area and we need to get them down to Pug Rescue HQ Manawatu area, asap. They do have a travel crate but given the male won't leave the female alone may need separate travel accommodation.
If you think you can help then please email me, [email protected]
TIA

Edit:
Thank you all for the wonderful offers of help and support.
The 2 Pugs are still in a safe place and being well taken care of. They have been fed, have settled and now tucked up asleep in a soft crate.
The male Pug is in OK body condition, the female is thin, yes, but that can be fixed with time, love and good quality food. Food her pal cannot steal from under her nose.
We currently have several options to explore in order to get them to Pug Rescue HQ, and are working through those options.
Thanks again everyone, you are awesome!

Edit: ❤️ 🐾 Thank you for all of your offers of donations while we work through this.

One of the many faces of Franklin. We were having a bit of a conversation and this was a new look I couldn't resist capturing.
It's a bit of a balancing act between skin and kidneys but Franklin is at least doing OK at present.

Thanks everyone, we have had some lovely applications for Flash. Not taking any more at this stage. We appreciate all the interest.

This lovely boy is on the hunt for a new home.
He is neutered, microchipped and council registered.
His owner writes:
Hi, my name is Flash. I am 5 years old.
I love being around people and enjoy the company of adults and children. I also get along with other dogs but have not had the chance to meet any cats.
Though my name is Flash I prefer to walk short distance, I don't like long walks.
I like to sleep on all things warm and fuzzy. "

Flash lives in the Auckland area so that's where we are looking to find a perfect home for him. His owner will want to meet and interview potential new families, and check the property is very secure.
If you are interested in offering a home to Flash then please email [email protected] for one of our adoption application forms.
As always you will need to own the home you live in, and where Flash would live. There must be someone at home much of the time.
Suitable applications will be forwarded to his owner.

Banjo in front, Franklin and Louie in behind. Never any room on the arm chair for me.

Did you know 2024 marks 25 years since our Pug Rescue first officially started? I'd helped a few Pugs prior to our rescue service kicking off in a more formal way.
Many, many Pugs helped over the years, quite a few tears at times, other times I'd have liked to have slapped someone for the condition their Pug was in. Hugs dispensed to Pug parents grieving at having to surrender their baby, humbled by the trust they put in me.
I got to share the final years of some 40 odd Pugs, and shed tears when they gained their wings.
Many awesome and amazing people I have met, some remain special friends to this day.

You forget what a holiday is but then after all this time I'd not know what to do if I had the chance.

A massive thank you to everyone who has been part of our Pug rescue family, in whatever capacity that has been. It's not been something I could have continued for this length of time without your fantastic support.
Your generosity has been the thing which has enabled me to to care for so many precious Pugs. A generosity which at times brings me to tears. (Jackson & Wal, if you are reading this).
I will never be able to thank everyone enough.

I have just posted an update on our Givealittle page from Louie. He might be frowning at me for waking him up for a quick photo but we want to thank everyone for their generosity in donating towards his dental surgery. Your wonderful support gave him the funds needed, as well as a little more which has gone towards food and joint support. I am so grateful for the support given when our rescue fund is now almost nil.
Louie now weighs 10kg, so 1.7kg down! How good is that? We are aiming for another 500gm then his surgery can go ahead.

I also want to thank everybody for your kind words when dear old Noddy gained his wings. His gentle presence and wonderful cuddles have been very much missed.

Much sadness at our HQ tonight. Our precious old man, Noddy, (in blue coat) has gained his wings as he was set free to cross the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. At nearly 16 he was becoming more frail and today his health suddenly declined.
He was the sweetest little chap, the best cuddle Pug, and all round super boy. Very much loved. Now reunited with his little friend Hettie.
My special thanks to Dr Libby for her wonderful care of Noddy today, and the support given to me.

Say hi to Louie. This handsome boy recently arrived into our care. On checking his vaccination booklet it came as a big surprise to learn he is a brother to Batman. Like Batman, Louie is need of weight loss (about 2.5kg), and will need dental surgery (approx $1500, so funds will be needed), once his weight is at a healthier level.
Louie is 8.4 years old and once his health goals have been met he will be on the search for a perfect home. He is NOT available for adoption as yet.
Any help towards Louie's vet costs will be very much appreciated. Account is Pug Rescue 03 0683 0196662 01
(A huge thank you to the anonymous donor for their amazing donation. Your kindness made me cry.)

BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER.
We will always preach PREVENT IS BETTER THAN CURE!
What we have to ask is what do you do if you think your dog is suffering from heat stress.
If you believe your dog may be experiencing heat stress follow these steps:
If your dog is lying outside on the pavement, Move your dog to a shaded spot, or even better to an air-conditioned room
Offer fresh, cool water
Stop all physical activities until their symptoms have resolved
Should your dog’s symptoms worsen, or you think your dog is suffering from heat stroke, you must take IMMEDIATE action. Steps to take include:
Begin cooling your dog by wetting down their body with a hose or bucket, but avoid the face
If possible a fan blowing over their damp skin will assist in cooling them down.
See a vet immediately
PLEASE NOTE It is not advised to place wet towels over the body as it will trap the heat that is trying to escape
ANOTHER HELPFUL TIP: recruit others to help you – ask someone to call the vet while others help you cool your dog.

It is with sadness and regret that I have to advise of a need to change how our Pug Rescue has operated for nearly 25 years.
Whilst age is catching up with me, a bigger issue is around our house situation. What I thought and understood was to be a home indefinitely, is looking quite unlikely and no longer guaranteed. Whilst the need for a new abode isn't urgent (Ive been given a window of approx 12 months), it may be a bit of a battle finding the right place. This all means it is no longer practical, or sensible, for me to take in Pugs such as seniors, and those with some health issues, for their twilight years. Those who are the current permanent rescue residents will remain in my care, even if we end up in a caravan somewhere. There are 7 aged between 9 and nearly 16 years. They will still require vet care, good food etc., so continued support towards this will be so very much appreciated.

I will still be available to help in other ways. Including assisting with placement of Pugs needing a new home. There will be some criteria around that but finding the perfect home will be top of the agenda as always.
Our website remains available for those seeking info about all things Pug, before taking the plunge of getting one, and I'm still able to answer queries as needed.

Some of the crew enjoying new toys on Christmas morning. Not the greatest pic but they were busy having fun.

BEAT THE HEAT
We should have put this sign up for the weekend just gone as it was a scorcher and we are still seeing dogs being walked in the hottest part of the day. Good on people for walking their dog or dogs [ as some dogs don't even get to do that] But please take your dog out in the morning or late evening when the temperature is cooler. Like the sign says if you are going to walk your dog at the hottest time of the day put a fur coat on and take off your shoes and see how long you last. Sorry it just freaks us out when we see it and we are really having trouble understanding it.

10/01/2024

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!
Beat the heat this summer as these days are getting hot. I was caught out yesterday just walking around without the dog.
The first question we need to ask is... what do you look for if your dog has heatstroke?
Dogs suffering from heatstroke will first present mild symptoms (such as excessive panting and restlessness) and these will progress to more severe symptoms (vomiting, staggering) if not treated. If you suspect your dog has heatstroke, check for symptoms and practice heatstroke-appropriate first aid [ which we will do a follow up on] while taking your dog to the emergency vet. [Most important]
