New Zealand Pug Rescue We provide educational breed information and co-ordinate Pug Rescue/re-housing New Zealand wide. I'm not getting any younger.

The Wellington Pug Dog Club established a policy in 1999, for the rescue and re-homing of Pugs. At this time a Health and Welfare fund was set up to help cover costs involved with taking care of these dogs. With the increasing popularity of the breed came the concern of more indiscriminate back yard breeding & puppy farming, Pugs being purchased on impulse by people who were not fully aware of wha

t Pug ownership can involve, or the potential costly health issues, hence the possibility of more Pugs needing help. In 2022 the Wellington Pug Dog Club changed direction to focus on shows and our breed rescue now operates independently. We rely solely on donations and various fundraising events, including Hug A Pug for our funding

Now in 2024, 25 years after we first officially started, I have been forced to alter how our rescue service is run. Maintaining enough funds has become very difficult and our HQ is going to be forced to shift at some stage in the next year or so. Finding a suitable home that's fit for purpose will be a huge challenge without winning lotto. I will continue to do my best to help new Pugs into suitable homes but, sadly, no longer can I take in seniors and or Pugs with health issues. I will continue to care for the seniors already in residence and very much hope for ongoing support to help with costs of vet care, quality food and health supplements. Top of our wish list are donations to help with vet costs, food and health supplements. Please email [email protected] if you would like to know how you can help. Donations can also be made via our Givealittle page. For anyone thinking of adding a Pug to their family please visit our website for some great information on the breed. Pugs are still very popular and for good reason. However owning a Pug isn't for everyone. These little dogs need a lot of human company and attention, a safe and secure environment, good food and attention to weight control, (a fresh/raw food diet is recommended over highly processed kibble),and owners who are prepared for any high vet bills which may arise. Pugs are 100% house dogs, quirky, unreliable, entertaining, shed a lot of hair. There are still a lot of breeders failing to carry out basic health testing so education is the best tool to have. (A breeder who is a member of Dogs NZ, and registers their puppies, should be first place to go. In order to be able to register their puppies they are required to undertake some basic health tests on Pugs being bred with. They are also bound by a Code of Conduct.) If you know of a Pug in need of our help, or would like to offer a home to a Pug who may need a new sofa to crash on, please don't hesitate to get in touch. [email protected]

If you have any questions about any aspect of what we do, then please email and ask.

Sorry it's taken me a while to post an update. Super busy with the house full of Pugs who are currently shedding their happy hairs on an industrial scale.

Zac wishes to advise he has had 2 x meet and greets. First with humans and then with their dogs. Everything went really well. From that it was decided Zac would revisit Dr Libby for another round of surgery in order to get better margins on his chest from the previous lump removal. That was booked for Tuesday this week. In the meantime he'd had a skin reaction from that earlier surgery so had been back to see Dr Libby for medication. Treatment included regular baths and during Mondays bath I found a small nodule inside one of his back legs. A check of that showed mast cells so it was removed on Tuesday along with 2 tiny pin head size lumps Dr Libby found. While we await results Zac is making a good recovery. Just look at him kicking back and relaxing. Until results are in his potential adoption hasn't been 100% confirmed.

Tuesday of last week it was Mitchell's turn for surgery with Dr Libby. He had a bit of a face lift. Excessive nose roll trimmed back, his nostrils widened and castration. Mitchell's recovery is also going really well. He already looks so much better and his eyes are now beautifully visible. Whilst he had nostrils widened Mitchell could very much do with more complex surgery on his airway to help him breathe a little easier when exercising, excited, or in hot weather. Getting that done is a step too far right now.

He's a very happy and rather mischievous man. It has been fun getting to know him and the other more recent arrivals.

A good day to get your calendar ordered! ✅

🎉 Our annual PUG RESCUE CALENDARS are back for 2025 🎉

It’s that time again! Yay!

Our wonderful supporter Michelle organises these fantastic calendars every year - they are so special and treasured, and we are lucky enough to get all of the proceeds. Those proceeds go a long way to supporting what we do here at Pug Rescue HQ. We have a full house at the moment!

They are 20x28cm wall calendars (with various photos of many pugs on each month) and make amazing Christmas gifts - a special reminder of our favourite creatures 365 days of the year🎄 ♥️ 🐾

It may be that your fur baby has crossed the rainbow bridge and you want a special photo of him or her in it 🌈 🐾

Here’s what you need to do:

🐾 Email Michelle a photo (or three 😜) of your beautiful puggies and tell her their names and your postal address; Michelle will reply with bank transfer details and postage costs; pay $30 + postage per calendar before 18 November; then sit back and wait for your gorgeous calendars to arrive!

🐾 Photos must be submitted by email before Monday 18 November and payment made by then too.

🐾 Please email the highest resolution possible and don’t forget to include your pug(s) name!

🐾 If you don’t own a pug, but would just like a calendar to support us, email Michelle and she will add you to the list!

🐾 Email Michelle at: [email protected]

Any other questions you can contact her there.

A huge thank you to Michelle for undertaking this massive exercise! It is so appreciated 💗

Not the best photo because Zac is in sleep mode after his big day with Dr Libby yesterday. He isn't the easiest of patients, didn't allow me a lot of sleep last night, so right now I've let a sleeping dog be.
The surgery, to remove both of the masses he had, went very well. Plenty of skin to get good closure in both areas. Dr Libby had been a bit concerned the closure on the leg may have been a challenge, but no.
We are now waiting for results and praying for clear margins.

Little Raines surgery also went really well. 4 more teeth out and spay. She bounces back so quickly and would be back wrestling with young Eddie this morning if allowed. An amazing little girl after everything she has been through in the past.

Tomorrow is the Frenchmans turn to have a day at the vet clinic for neuter. He has an amazing home waiting, they are so excited to have him join their family they are collecting him on Friday.
As well as new human parents and younger people, he will have a gorgeous Frenchie sister, also a rescue.
He's a lovely boy with a wonderful future ahead.

As well as meeting up with the Frenchmans new Mum on Friday, Raine and Zac go for post op checks, the new Pug pair for weigh in. It has been a rather busy few days at Pug Rescue HQ.
Hoping for a quiet weekend to get a few dozen Puggy toenails dremeled.

New arrivals today and one isn't like the others.
Due to owners situation everything was organised within 3 days.
I was supposed to collect 3 Pugs but came home with 2 and a Frenchie.
6 yr old black Pug boy is still entire. 6 yr old fawn girl has been spayed.
The Frenchie is probably the same age, still entire.
The owner had told me all dogs were 4 yrs old but vaccination booklet and registration details show different.
They have never been house dogs, living outside in kennels so not house trained. Grubby, ungroomed.
Quite a culture shock to find themselves indoors with 13 other dogs, but not a cross word.

I have touched base with a reputable Frenchie breeder I know and have a plan in place to see if we can find a super new home for him. He will be neutered before leaving here.

The Pugs are an ex breeding pair. They will have health checks done, the boy will be neutered and the girl attend my weight watchers clinic in order to shed a couple of kg.
Eventually they will be wanting a fantastic new home where they can remain together.

Finally a huge thank you to everyone who has given so generously. Your amazing support has literally been a godsend.

EDIT: We are not taking any further applications for the French Bulldog. I have several to work through already.
If anyone is interested in adopting Pugs in pairs then please email [email protected] for information and an application questionnaire.

Not the best day for our new boy Zac.

On Saturday he was transfered from his foster home to Pug Rescue HQ so that I could finally get his 2 lumps checked. (The vet who checked them previously felt they were simply cosmetic, I already had concerns after seeing a photo of the lump on his leg, and no lump should go unchecked).

His foster family had taken great care of him during his stay with them.

Today he went to see Dr Libby who took fine needle aspirations, checked the cells under microscope then delivered the news.
The lump on Zacs leg showed a mass of mast cells, the one in his brisket also showed abnormal cells.

Whilst Zac still needs to lose some weight his general health is good and the need to remove the lumps is a priority. His surgery is set to take place on the 29th. Another cost for our beleaguered funds.

Meanwhile he's a happy lad who has settled in well. Already comfortable enough to join in with the zoomie gang.

Raine has been tentatively booked in for her spay and 2nd dental on the same day. It will depend on how involved and time consuming Zacs surgery is.
I will post another update then.

Finally a very big thank you to everyone who has donated, and continue to donate, towards the care of these Pugs. You keep us going.

🐾 Meet Zac 💛

This is our new boy Zac.

He arrived a couple of weeks ago and is currently in foster care.

Zac is 7.5yrs old. He has about 2kg in weight to shed and has a couple of lumps which will require investigation a bit further down the track.

The vet who saw Zac didn't think the lumps were of any concern and that overall Zac is in good health. However no lump should be ignored so biopsies will be done before Zac is ready for a new home.

He is not available for adoption at this time.

Thank you everyone for your kind donations to the cause. It means we can continue doing what we do for another day! 🥰

Do you remember the two little pugs we rescued together in June? 🐾

Very skinny, scabby and generally pretty miserable.

We re-named them Raine (girl) and Kato (boy), and they have made huge progress thanks to our TLC 💛

They are both completely different dogs to when they arrived. Body and coat condition is very much improved and their personalities are blossoming.

Raine found her voice for the first time last week when she raced out and barked at the sheep. We were so happy to hear her speak at last (and of course it was to menace another creature!). She has a really cheeky personality.

Kato is a total honey. He is very attached to Head Pug Wrangler, Brenda, whereas Raine is a bit more independent.

They both really enjoy doing zoomies around the yard. Fellow Pug Rescue resident, young Eddie Bear instigates it and away they go, round and round zooming and chasing. It's fantastic to see them so happy.

We went to the vet today for Raine’s surgery. She had 14 teeth out. There is still a bit more dental work required, plus her spay in a few weeks. Too much to fit it in all at once. She is recovering well from today. Raine’s vet bill for today was $1247.

Kato will have his dental next week.

Please note they are not available for adoption yet.

We've been helping Pugs in need for 25 years, and continue to need your support to be able to do this.

Senior Pugs, younger Pugs, Pugs with health issues, Pugs with challenging behaviors, or just those in need of a new loving home. Hundreds of Pugs have been helped during this time. We are fully dependent on donations and fundraising, and couldn't continue to help Pugs without the wonderful support we get.

Donated funds are used for vet care, quality dog food, and other needs any of the Pugs may have: Special diets, microchipping, registration, harnesses, safe cleaning products, transport. Our costs are ongoing.

If at anytime you wanted to share some , our account is Pug Rescue 03 0683 0196662 01. This goes towards vet bills and daily pampering (well food and board 🥴) of our 4-legged guests.
